  3. Zach A leader is simply… Good ideas, but don’t start… From personal experience, anyone can… MOST IMPORTANTLY: This is independent from job title. Story Time – Mofleh and Steve TO their idea Ongoing story about the client I am working at A story of developers stepping up and effecting change Change related to CI/CD dreams to the client I currently work at. These dreams started at a grass roots level one day when… 2 dudes on a team To get the projrect out the door faster. They didn’t have any CI or Dev/Ops dreams
  4. Story – M&S Idea TO Dream Bottleneck, so reach out to Ops. Ops regression tests too slow Very long release time as well The gap between Dev and Ops had gotten too large. Started dreaming ways to solve Moved with Dream This: Exposed existing problem And started to fix it Allison – So you have just heard a story where two dudes stumbled upon this dev ops dream at the company. Now lets talk about the here and now, you probably have a dream for DevOps at your organization. We are going to talk about the steps you can take to get this dream to a reality at your org based on our experience.
  5. NOTE: Allison for the steps, Allison will give at least a high level, and Zach will give a story. Plus we both do anything else to assist or add to what the other has to say. Allison - Regardless of your name tag, your company isn’t going to punish you for bringing in a new idea/or going above and beyond your normal job responsibilities. In fact, most reward this - Don’t take the problem/idea/solution to your ”lead” or supervisor and expect them to implement it, start the solution yourself. Story – Penny start TO Practices to the team Who is penny – Tester from ops Recognize old ops ways wont cut it Looks into test practices/automation Tried to propose changes to Started chatting about these practices to the team
  6. The first goal isn’t to convince the CEO of your idea, you don’t even need their buy in at first! Get your fellow team members on board first, have allies. Zach – Zach Start TO One Year Later Part of Satellite team We recognize the performance/upkeep issues with the automated testing regression framework Bring it up to Penny, who empowers me to start I start working on it…. And still am the go to guy 1 year later
  7. Invest in Learning – How to find practices, refine our implementation Have both Principles and Practices in mind and be ready to share them - Have some tangible practices to implement, and the principles/ideas behind them to convince people to try them Story: TDD/TDR Classes – Penny/Zach Gave principles/more practices to doers Helped to convince teams to not doers
  8. Figure out how and why this new idea interacts with your passions. Use this intersection to motivate you and attract others. Story – Go to Guy Communicate = leader
  9. Encourage discourse in the group, allow other to branch out, and encourage them to Start with any ideas or implementation they may have Story: Virtualization As mentioed before, when someone comes to me… Encourage them to step up and bring their idea to light. Virtualizing test data for speed and consistently. Become their first follower, make it as easy as possible.
  10. When you face adversity, always recenter on the why you are doing this Story – First major release with these tests as part of the Ops sign off… Failed We were originally mad... Recentered on the why we are doing this No one was so strongly tied to one practice that they feel threatened. Took it as a positive Exposed areas of improvemtns We all grew
