Our vision is clear. We are here to change the way enterprise software is acquired, hosted and maintained. Today’s technology offerings are evolving to meet changing customer requirements and market demographics. Enterprise software is one of the last technologies prone to long evaluation cycles, huge deployment costs and risky implementations. While most software vendors provide freemium purchase models, ERP and other applications are woefully out-of-date. Business moves too quickly. And, a new generation of professionals views the RFP selection process as a relic from another era. It doesn’t need to be that way.
Once the software is installed, its capabilities should be boundless. While SaaS offerings have changed the financial dynamic of purchasing software it has created compromises in customization and extensibility. Our vision is different. We foresee the need to add operational and performance insight, a vast array of tools to speed implementation and enhance usability, a catalog of complementary software to meet the unique needs of businesses through an app store concept, and a social fabric to truly enrich application functionality. With so much innovation creating new frontiers, why confine your enterprise applications to yesterday’s traditions?

Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

Virtualization has changed the way we think about compute. Tablets have changed the way we think about end user compute. Java has changed the way we think about writing code. Flash has changed the way we think about storage performance. Cloud has changed the way we think about producint and consuming IT services. On and on and on -- no shortage of the overused "paradigm shifts" to choose from.Perhaps that's why so many of us are attracted to this space -- there's so much changing all the time.To this long list, I now want to add "virtualizing distance" -- as evidenced by technologies such as VPLEX -- where we start to think of distance as something to exploit to our advantage -- as opposed to something that has to be merely overcome.
Lets start with a quick overview of the driving force behind delivering ITaaS.Enterprise IT has many great things about it – its controlled by IT, so it’s reliable, secure and you are confident that you can deliver SLAs. Enterprise IT Provides Control & Reliability
Public Clouds Introduced Greater AgilityNow, along comes the Private Cloud… services we’re familiar with, such as Amazon, Salesforce.com, RackSpace, Google, and others. These Public Clouds have many attractive agility attributes –They’re simple to use – simply via a browser and with a credit cardThey’re low-cost – often charged by the Instance-HourThey’re flexible – offering a variety of IaaS, PaaS and SaaS optionsThey’re self-service – the offerings are public, well-understood, and accessed via simple-to-understand approaches over the web.
IT Risks Loss of ControlHowever, with the pervasiveness and simplicity of the Public Cloud comes an unintended consequence: The potential for IT to “lose control” as internal users opt to use external services.Forrester Research points out:41% of Information Workers use personal cloud services(For example: nearly email, MobileMe, or any other web-based service)22% of Information Workers use a non-IT provisioned service to perform their job(For example, DropBox, Box.net, and other commercially-available services, as well as unofficial use by developers of services such as Amazon’s IaaS offerings.)Frequently, these web-based services are used without IT’s knowledge or supervision. Such use of non-IT provisioned services is sometimes referred-to as “Shadow IT”Most IT organizations are acutely aware that employee use of external services potentially exposes the company to security threats, loss of data, regulatory infractions, and other legal loss-of-control issues. Additionally, because some of these pay-per-use public cloud services are being expensed on employee-owned credit cards, the IT department loses financial oversight control – i.e. having a full perspective of all IT-related costs/expenses company-wide.
IT Must Transform To An “Internal Service Provider”Inevitably upon seeing the externally-provided cloud offerings available, the business will naturally ask the same of IT. It’s just a matter of time. Therefore, if internal IT is to adapt and “compete” with external services, there are a number of attributes and business perspectives it must develop. Deliver improved business agilityThis is the top-line benefit. The point is not to shave more cost… that was achieved during phase I and phase II of the journey to your cloud. As a “SP”, the lines-of-business will expect IT to directly contribute to their agility – providing higher-value services more quickly.Provide value to business top-lineIT’s services must serve – and even anticipate – the lines-of-business technology needs. IT will need to be aligned ever-more closely with the business, and take a competitive perspective to serving the business… just as an external provider would.Maintain Trust and ControlNo matter what the transformed IT delivery model, IT will be expected to maintain (if not increase) the level of trust across all servicesSimplify Service ConsumptionAs-with external providers, IT will need to simplify how services are “consumed”, i.e. how easily they are selected and provisioned by users; how clearly they are priced, costed and billed; how “elastic” their capacity is; how simplified the SLA’s and OLA’s are made.
The Goal of the Cloud Journey Is IT-as-a-ServiceRecall the 3-phase Journey to your cloud.Phase I is where virtualization is applied to mostly IT Production applications, with the goals of simplification, efficiency and protection.Phase II is where IT applies virtualization & other tools across both IT and business production applications. The goals here are to provide improved application scalability, continuity and securityPhase III – IT-as-a-Service – is where the tools and capabilities developed in phase I and II are applied to serving the business needs. The infrastructure goals are Standardization and automation.EMC’s own IT department is far along on this path, and we’ve developed a great set of experience and learnings along the way.
ITaaS Requires a Hybrid Cloud InfrastructureFederating resources – joining them so they behave as on larger group of resources – between your private cloud and compatible service providers defines the hybrid cloud model. Don’t confuse the hybrid model with using private cloud for some applications or infrastructure and the public cloud for distinctly different and separate applications – that’s simply using both private cloud and public cloud. No different than running you business apps internally and outsourcing payroll. Hybrid cloud is different. Here, infrastructure is combined and federated so that applications run on a blend of sourced resources. Virtualization is extended from the servers in a rack to the collective servers in many buildings – the servers in your buildings and the servers in a provider’s buildings. Many refer to this as a cloud OS. The information is distributed as well. Instead of a single database environment operating with data distributed across many disks in a single array, now the information is distributed across many arrays in many different locations. Security is different as well – we need security to operate in the logical context created by hybrid cloud, but it most also be aware of and secure the all of the physical environments that create the hybrid cloud environment. The point is that to federate these resources together so they act as one, a common architecture is needed with operating systems, information management, and security designed for the hybrid world. Why go hybrid? Two big reasons. First, there’s far more flexibility for IT because it opens up a world of available resources. Second, studies have shown that it delivers the absolute lowest total cost in delivering IT compared to any other model – including public cloud.
The New Application PlatformFollowing infrastructure transformation and leveraging the hybrid cloud, comes transformation of the application layer itself. The New Application Platform itself is also hybrid – in that application components, or even entire applications themselves – are virtualized and available on-demand either from internal or external providers.
Access Applications from Any DeviceAnd finally, there is the transformation of how users access applications and data: Transformation of end user provisioning.Critical to the ITaaS model is the “Bring-Your-Own-Device” (BYOD) philosophy where virtualization and trust technologies are used to allow IT to support any end-user preferred device. The BYOD approach helps support the notion of “IT Consumerization”- where IT functions as if it was a competitive entity, supporting all user-preferred devices in an “anywhere, anytime” consumer-style delivery approach.
The New Technology Model Putting this new model all together, Trust and Automation must be integrated top-to-bottom across the 3 layers of computing.Rather than custom-tailor applications and security for individual applications and user devices, the assembly of these stacks needs to be automated, and trust policies must be applied consistently across the layers.
To transform business, there is a new world of big data applications. In many industries there are special purpose applications like video editing, image processing. In all industries we are dealing with growing amounts of semi-structured and unstructured data that require new storage. Storage that can scale out to PB with linear performance and no increase in administrators or operational cost.<CLICK>These new big data apps are a compliment to the traditional enterprise apps that we have been optimizing for years. But, enterprise apps now run in our private clouds and need transactional storage that is tightly integrated with VMware and provides simplicity and efficiency to reduce cost and complexity, but also the scalability and availability needed for running mission critical applications. <CLICK>Of course, you need to protect all this information with backup and archive. One single platform that covers enterprise applications and big data applications. For backup, you need massive speed to handle the consolidation from server virtualization and it needs to be tigthly integrated with VMware to ensure you are as efficient as possible with server resources. Deduplication is the critical buying criteria in all backup environments today and more important than ever as virtual machine densities per physical server continue to grow.<CLICK>We expect all enterprises to end up with hybrid clouds and you need to build an enabling infrastructure now. That enabling infrastructure includes the ability to manage security and compliance, highly automated management drive largely based on policy and the ability to move workloads by integrating data movement with application movement.<CLICK>Transforming your business also depends on next generation big data analytics. The scale of big data and the value of the insights is completely different than past generations of data warehousing. You need a big data stack that covers both structured AND unstructured data and starts to integrate the kinds of real-time information available in places like Twitter, LinkedIn, etc… Handling this volume of information demands new architectures that are massively scalable.<CLICK>Finally, you need to provide end-users with their choice of device, but still maintain control and compliance for interacting with the Enterprise applications and information, wherever they may be running. At EMC, we have built this portfolio… <CLICK>

Infrastructure is the critical foundation for customers to evolve to IT-as-a-Service and cloud by providing the fundamental building blocks required.Cloud defines Infrastructure-as-a-Service as a model by which a standard set of services are delivered on-demand through self-service and automation from a shared pool of resources, as opposed to simply setting up parallel infrastructures. This requires an easily managed and automated architecture that is delivered through the integration of EMC Storage and Management and Cisco Unified Fabric, Unified Computing and Unified Management. Customers are embarking on cloud computing and IT-as-a-Service in order to increase the speed of IT and achieve a lower cost of operations. By standardizing on a set of IT services available from a pool of shared resources, with self-service automated provisioning, customers can streamline their operations and spend more of their time and money on innovations within IT.
Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Now let’s move from the VNXe series and explore the larger VNX series.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. One of the biggest shifts in IT is, of course, the move to server virtualization. It continues to have a profound impact on how we look at storage provisioning today. In the “good old days,” we typically had a single application running on a server. To meet performance objectives, we would create a RAID group and then carve out LUNs statically. With virtualization, that has all changed.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Virtualization enables you to save on infrastructure and run more applications on fewer physical servers. To meet the growing and dynamic needs of the business, server virtualization pools server resources and enables dynamic provisioning and optimization of compute power and applications according to shifting business needs. To stay relevant, storage had to embrace this same pooling paradigm. Just like VMware vMotion allows you to move things around on the server side, EMC saw the need to allow data to move dynamically across different tiers of drives (from high performance to lower cost/high capacity) according to its business activity. Not only did such data movement make sense, it also had to be fully automated and self-managing.As the storage system takes on more and more automation and ongoing optimization, it needs more processing power. EMC knew this to be a central requirement for its next-generation midtier storage systems.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. There’s something called the 90/90 rule:Ninety percent of data’s activity occurs in first 90 days of its life. Once data is 90 days old, there’s only a 10 percent chance anybody will ever look at it…and after another quarter—10 percent of that. By the end of the year, that’s a 0.1 percent chance that the data will be touched! It’s mostly stone cold. When young and hot, where should we put it?When the data is highly active we place it on flash drives, when it becomes cold, we move it to high capacity near-line drives. The VNX series has been expressly designed to take advantage of the latest innovation in Flash drive technology, maximizing the storage system’s performance and efficiency while minimizing cost per GB. When even a few Flash drives are combined with the EMC FAST Suite—an unrivaled set of software that tiers data across heterogeneous drives and boosts the most active data to cache, customers receive the optimal benefits of a FLASH 1st strategy.FLASH 1st, available only through EMC, ensures that customers never have to make concessions for cost or performance.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Highly active data is served from up to 2 TB of Flash drives with FAST Cache, which dynamically absorbs unpredicted spikes in system workloads. As that data ages and becomes less active over time, FAST VP tiers the data from high-performance to high-capacity drives in 1 GB increments, resulting in overall lower costs—regardless of application type or data age. Best of all, this all happens automatically based on customer-defined policies, which saves application and storage administrators time and money by intelligently doing the work associated with pre- and post-provisioning tasks.
The industry-leading innovations of the VNX series and the FAST Suite translate into compelling improvements in real-world virtualized application environments. For Microsoft SQL Server 2012, the VNX series with the FAST Suite supports more than three-times the number of users and transactions versus all hard disk drives. In environments running VMware View, the VNX series can boot 500 virtual desktops in eight minutes versus 27 minutes without Flash or FAST Suite. With Citrix XenDesktop, the VNX series can boot 1,000 virtual desktops in eight minutes.Likewise in virtualized Oracle environments, the VNX series can support more than three-times the number of users and transactions. Testing with Oracle and SQL OLTP workloads show that the all-Flash array (VNX5500-F) can deliver 10 times the performance at 1/8th the TPM (transactions per minute) cost when compared to a VNX with all hard disk drives.
EMC in the midtier began using SSDs or Flash drives as a storage option in 2008 and has continually driven the technology for added customer benefits.EMC added FAST LUN support in 2009.EMC introduced FAST Pools withFAST Cache in 2010.EMC came out with the VNX500-F Flash array in 2011.And now EMC has just introduced VFCache, which extends FAST to the server. It’s important to note that with this technology evolution, EMC has seen Flash drive demand grow dramatically. As Flash technology has become cheaper and software enhancements have allowed the platforms to better use Flash, Flash has become instrumental to more than 40 percent of VNX customers. With VFCache, EMC expects this number to increase.
The VNX series platform is optimized for virtualization with over 75 points of tight integration.Until today, one of the major challenges facing users in virtual environments was a management complexity gap. Storage administrators have access to detailed information on the array, but lack visibility into how the virtual server is configured and which virtual machines are consuming what for storage resources. VMware administrators, on the other hand, can see the details of the virtual server environment and virtual machines, but lack visibility into the storage system. On the VNX series, Unisphere, together with vCenter Server and VASA (VMware vStorage APIs for Storage Awareness) integration, makes storage management in a virtualized environment a seamless experience. Each administrator can use their familiar interface to gain full visibility into virtual and physical resources, transparently provision storage, integrate replication, and access and offload all storage functions to the storage system. To further drive efficiency in the VMware space, EMC has delivered on the VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI) for both SAN and NAS connections, allowing the VNX series to be fully optimized for virtualized environments. This technology offloads VMware storage-related functions from the server to the storage system, enabling more efficient use of server and network resources for increased performance and consolidation.Letting the VNX series perform common data management tasks, like vMotion, results in more network I/O, more virtual machines, and faster response time. The VNX series delivers unmatched VMware management integration and optimization and is ideal if you are running VMware.
EMC and VNX is the best storage for virtual environments.According to a Wikibon survey conducted in April 2011, EMC with VNX was voted best product for VMware integration, based on two factors—the importance of the integration from a customer’s perspective, and the quality of the integration.According to the September 2011 “Goldman Sachs IT Spending Survey,” EMC is the storage vendor of choice in virtualized server environments. And in 2012, VNX and VNXe were voted the 2012 winners in the Storage Virtualization categoryby the Virtualization Review Reader’s Choice Award and Buyers Guide.
This infrastructure choice is the same whether you are an enterprise building a private cloud or a service provider building virtual private clouds for your clients. In this slide are listed some of the companies EMC has partnered with that are Trusted Service Providers. Through EMC, customers have access to partners they trust - and the benefits of private and virtual private clouds. In this era, customers wield the power of “and” as opposed to “or.”
