This document summarizes the evolution of tool use among early human species from Australopithecus afarensis to modern Homo sapiens sapiens. It describes how tools started as sharp rocks and have advanced to modern tools. Early humans like A. afarensis did not make tools but used found rocks and sticks. Homo habilis were the first to make sharp rock tools and discover fire. Homo erectus could create fire and used stone axes and knives. Neanderthals created more complex tools from different materials. Homo sapiens used bows and arrows and created boats and art. Modern humans continue advancing tools with materials like metal and plastic.

1. EARLY HUMANS: TOOLS By: Ellie

2. Introduction Over the years early humans have evolved and with them have their tools and weapons used for things like hunting. Tools started off as sharp rocks and have become the modern arsenal that we know today. When Scientists have found early humans they have been very commonly found with tools. This shows that tools could have been a very important factor in the survival of the Homo sapiens before us. To

3. Australopithecus afarensis Australopithecus afarensis did not have the knowledge to create tools but they were smart enough to find them. These hominids may have used rocks and sticks to help eat and scavenge. Instead of hunting they scavenged for berries and carcass's of animals.

4. Homo habilis Homo habilis were some of the first homonids to make tools. Some tools they made were sharp rocks. They made these by rubbing rocks together until they got the desired sharp edge. Homo habilis were also the first homonid to discover fire. They did not know how to make fire but they may have found it and then transported to their camp.

5. Homo erectus Homo erectus were the first homonid to know how to create fire. They could now boil water and cook food, as well as keep warm during the night. These homonids could hunt and remember things but they could not talk. Some of the tools that Homo erectus used were traps, snares, sharp sticks and rocks, stone axes, and knives. Homo erectus also started to migrate and populate the world.

6. Homo sapiens Neanderthalensis The Neanderthals created many tools most of which were more complex than the earlier homonids tools. These homonids learned to make weapons using different types of rocks and other materials. Depending on the tasks they would use different rocks and materials. Some of the tools that these hominids used were stone swords and axes, traps and snares, and other sharp objects.

7. Homo sapiens Cro-Magnon Homo sapien Cro-Magnon worked together really well. This helped when hunting and gathering food. Cro-Magnon started to make jewellery and art, they began to talk and sing. They still used stone weapons but they may have been more complicated and easier to use. These hominids were also the first to use the bow and arrow, This improved their hunting immensely. They also created wooden rafts and boats.

8. Homo sapiens sapiens Homo sapiens sapiens are the humans that we know today. In fact we are all Homo sapiens sapiens. These hominids started to make even more complex tools such as axes, hammers, etc… The materials used to make tools have also improved. Some materials used are plastic, metal, antlers, and ivory. We have started to farm and are becoming more aware of our surroundings.

9. Conclusion Over the millions of years that the earth has been in existence it has changed a lot. Hominids went from not knowing what fire is to being able to make and use it. They have come from scavenging and gathering to farming and breeding animals. All of this has led up to what we have now.
