ELEMENTS THAT
MAKE NEWS
 Emphasizes the newest angle of the story
 A news story must immediately tell the impact of the
event
 Recency – time of occurrence;
 Primacy
 The news reporter is duty bound to report immediately
the news happening or the expected event to happen
in the society.
IMMEDIACY OR TIMELINESS
 Geographical nearness as well as nearness of kinship or
interest
 Readers are more interested to know what is
happening around them
 Interest of the readers depends upon the “closeness of
their own personal affairs, their homes, their business”
activities or enterprises
 Readers are expected to know the changing conditions
in foreign countries that usually affect their own
lifestyles
PROXIMITY OR NEARNESS
“To every human being, the most interesting thing in the
world is himself and after the things nearest him in body
and mind — his job, health, and money, his home and his
family, his friend and associates, his clubs and church,
his hobbies, recreations, and amusements.”
- Warren
PROXIMITY OR NEARNESS
 Readers are always interested to read more about
people, places, celebrities, stars, personalities and
other things which are common and very familiar to
them.
 The readers will always attach some social values and
meanings to the changing events in the affairs and
achievements of the people in our society.
 Examples are events or affairs concerning the top
officials in the national government and other
interesting personalities in the Philippines, Asian
countries, and the US
PROMINENCE
 Refers to strange or unnatural events, objects,
persons, and places
 Events which are indeed rare, unusual, and unique
 Interesting not because of its news value but because
of the human interest side of it.
 “When a dog bites a man that is not news, but when a
man bites a dog that is news.” – (Dana, 1882)
ODDITY OR UNSUALNESS
 Essential in catching the attention of the readers
 Examples would be the intense conflict of different
political groups in the Philippines.
CONFLICT
 The continuing suspense of day-to-day news events
will always attract the attention of the reading public
 Suspended-interest story — tense and dramatic
SUSPENSE
 Various human responses such as the innate desire for
food, clothing, shelter, the universal interest in
children, animals, nature, and the natural feelings of
love, sympathy, generosity, fear, hatred, and jealousy
 Anything that touches the very fibers and senses of
man and woman
HUMAN INTEREST OR EMOTIONS
 Shows the progress of any group or community
 The onward and forward march of civilization or the
progress of a country is chronicled step by step in the
newspaper
 Sacred task and duty of the reporter to serve the
“hungry readers for news of progress and
developments.”
CONSEQUENCE OR PROGRESS
 Whatever is significant to the life of an individual is
interesting to him
 Significance includes background materials for a
current event.
SIGNIFICANCE
 To avoid boredom on the part of the readers
 News stories which give spice or a new twist to
something commonplace
HUMOR
 Important names make important news
 The more names in the story, the better
NAMES
 Adds color to the story
 Anything that moves a reader to tears or to laughter is
good news
DRAMA
 Stories of sex are usually related to stories of romance,
marriage, divorce, and the varied activities of men and
women
 Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is elected President
SEX
ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE
 Stories of animals, especially those with talents are
good reading matter because of their human-interest
value
ANIMALS
 Sweepstakes numbers, vital statistics, election results,
scores in games, casualties, fatalities, price of goods,
and ages of women make good news.
NUMBER
MANILA, Philippines — What was supposed to be a 38-
minute speech got stretched to one hour and 40 minutes as
President Duterte deviated from his prepared address, delivered
several ad libs and opted for a more informal delivery style.
And while Presidential Communication Secretary Martin
Andanar claimed to have cried after reading the address, the
mood of the event was far from dramatic due to Duterte’s antics
and quips.
While delivering his speech, Duterte was heard saying:
"Taas mo na 'yan. Wala na 'yan (Bring it up. I'm done with that)"
and "Sandali lang 'tol (Wait)."
Duterte was apparently talking to the operator of the
teleprompter.
HOW DUTERTE'S FIRST SONA DEFIED EXPECTATIONS
BY ALEXIS ROMERO (PHILSTAR.COM) | UPDATED JULY 26, 2016 - 1:19PM
"Ad-libs made it more personal. The president, he has this
magic touch with the masses" Andanar said,
Duterte's address, which did not contain profanities, was
applauded 93 times. But there was an instance when the
president's statement did not seem to draw an enthusiastic
response from the audience, which consisted of lawmakers and
their guests.
"(We will) relax the bank secrecy laws," Duterte said.
The audience's applause was not that loud and Duterte,
who was unapologetic, could only smile about it. "E naging
presidente ako e, ayoko sanang makialam sa mga 'to," he said
Even before the start of his address, Duterte created a
scene when he shook the hands of Sen. Leila de Lima, who has
been critical of his campaign against drugs and crime. He greeted
the senator while he was about to climb to the rostrum of the
House of Representatives.
The president, however, reportedly made face after the brief
encounter with De Lima.
Before starting his speech, Duterte noted that all the three
top officials on the platform are from Mindanao. Duterte hails from
Davao City, where he served as mayor for 22 years.
House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez is from Davao del Norte
while Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III hails from
Cagayan de Oro.
All the living former presidents were present during the event
except Benigno Aquino III, Duterte's immediate predecessor.
Aquino's first address in 2010 blamed the Arroyo
administration for many of the country's ills. He continued to do so
until the final months of his administration.
In contrast, Duterte refused to point fingers for the problems
hounding the country, believing it will just be a waste of time.
"We cannot move forward if we allow the past to pull us
back. Finger-pointing is not the way. That is why I will not waste
precious time dwelling on the sins of the past or blaming those who
are perceived to be responsible for the mess that we are in and
suffering from," Duterte said.

Aquino's first address in 2010 blamed the Arroyo administration for many of the country's ills. He continued to do so until the final months of his administration. In contrast, Duterte refused to point fingers for the problems hounding the country, believing it will just be a waste of time. "We cannot move forward if we allow the past to pull us back. Finger-pointing is not the way. That is why I will not waste precious time dwelling on the sins of the past or blaming those who are perceived to be responsible for the mess that we are in and suffering from," Duterte said.
