Jesse James Garrett outlines the key elements of user experience on the web. Originally, the web was conceived as a hypertext system, but has increasingly become a software interface. This dual nature has caused confusion in terminology. The goal is to define these terms in their proper contexts and clarify the relationships between elements. A diagram is presented that maps elements such as visual design, navigation, information architecture and user needs for both conceptualizations of the web. The model is incomplete as it does not account for all influences on design or define a development process.
