What Is Global Warming ?
• Global warming is defined as the increase in earth’s
temperature due to the use of fossil fuels and other industrial
processes leading a build up of “greenhouse gases” in the
atmosphere.
• The gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and
chlorofluoro carbons(CFC's).
Issues:
• Must scientists blame industrialization
• Automotive industry (low fuel economy)
• Oil companies (fossil fuels)
• Power plants (coal)
• Logging industry (deforestation)
Effect on Global warming
I. Serve changes in Weather :
• Earth’s surface to a new high of 14.57 degree Centigrade.
• Rise in temperature was marked by unusually severe weather
in many parts of the world.
• The irony of this Global warming is that while it could reduce
climatic changes by drying up rains.
• It could also raise sea levels with disastrous consequences for
islands and low-level coastal areas.
II. Erratic rain :
• People around the world will experience climate change and
the erratic rainfall China to Africa will jeopardize the lives of
many people
• If is now really a decade since the IPCC accepted that human
activates were changing the world’s climate
III. More storms, foods, droughts, Submergenceence of
islands :
• Scientists have warned that a warmer world will mean more storms,
floods, droughts, and snowfalls.
• The countries that have to suffer most if the hague talks fail are the
small countries. Islands in danger of being submerged, from the
pacific to the caribbean are panicky. The lives of million people will be
affected by these.
IV. Ozone getting depleted :
• Pollution from transport is the fastest growing source of carbon dioxide
emissions since the industrial revolution.
• Carbon emission levels responsible for 70 percent of global warming
very widely among nations.
• Due to these emissions the ozone layer that provides a protective shield
over the earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation is getting depleted.
• Another greenhouse gas, methane has more than depleted.
Global Warming Solutions
Solving global warming means investing in
Clean energy ,green jobs and smart energy
solutions.
This five step plan will repower, refuel,
rebuild.
1. Set limits on global warming pollution.
2. Invest in green jobs and clean energy.
3. Drive smarter cars.
4. Create green homes and buildings.
5.Build better communities and transportation networks.
Ozone depletion
• Destruction of the upper atmospheric layer of ozone gas, caused by
substances formed from breakdown of ozone depleting substances.
• Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other halogenated ozone depleting
substances (ODS) are mainly responsible for man made chemical ozone
depletion.
• The amount of effective halogens (chlorine and bromine) in the
stratosphere can be calculated and are known as the equivalent effective
stratosphere chlorine (EESC).
What is Ozone depletion ?
The impact of ozone depletion:
• More skin cancers, sunburns and premature aging of the
skin
• The effects of ozone depletion on the Canadian agricultural
sector could be significant.
• Decrease in Plankton could distrupt the fresh and faltwater
food chains, and lead to a species shift in Canadian waters
• Wood, plastic, rubbers, fabrics and many construction
materials are degraded by UV radiation
1. Check your fire extinguisher to find active ingredient “halogenated
hydrocarbon”
2. Don’t buy aerosol products with chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)
3. Dispose of refrigerators , freezes, and air conditioning units
properly
4. Buy lumber, wood products and plywood that were not treated
with methylene bromide
How to protect the ozone layer?
Conclusion
• Climate change is a reality.
• Indian agriculture is likely to suffer losses due to heat, erratic
weather, and decreased irrigation availability.
• Adaptation strategies can help minimize negative impacts.
• These need research, funding, and policy support.
• Costs of adaptation and mitigation are unknown but likely to be high;
costs of inaction could be even higher.
• Start with ‘no-regrets’ adaptation options.
