21. Typical Cell Charging
Characteristics
1. Typical Cell charging characteristics of the Charger
is Shown in the table. The Cell is part of the 110V
battery bank . Contain 55 cells.
2. Factory setting of the charger allows each Cell to
be charged to 2.20Vdc, which corresponds to 121
Vdc terminal voltage. User can use an option up
to 2.3Vdc per Cell, Which corresponds to
126.5Vdc battery terminal voltage.
3. Each charging stage can be seen on the table.
Initial cell charging is achieved with constant
current mode; witch limits the current such that
it does not damage the cell plates. Normal
charging time should be calculated as 10hr to
12hr. This requires typical charging current rating
of 10% of the rated battery current capacity.
4. After the initial charging stage is completed,
charge current starts to decrease as the cell
voltage approaches 2.30Vdc. This takes
approximately 60% of the charging period and is
Necessary to equalize each Cell voltage within the
battery. During this period, the charger ensures
stable constant voltage across the battery
terminals.
5. After the charging is completed, the battery
keeps draining current from the charger in Order
to compensate its internal resistive losses, called
Self Discharging of the battery. This needs to be
compensated in order to keep the battery charge
at its highest condition.

23. Float Cum Boost Charger
1. Float cum Boost charger is a combination of a float charger and a boost charger.
2. During normal operation FCBC works as a float charger.
3. On failure of mains supply battery starts supplying to the load.
4. Once the main power restores FCBC switches to float or boost mode.
5. based on the battery charging requirements.
6. This configuration is most suitable where the load can withstand the Boost
7. voltage of the Battery Bank.

24. Float Charger & Boost Charger
1. The FC & BC has one Float charger & one Boost charger.
2. Float charger (FC) is designed to supply the requirement of load & battery float charging
currents and Boost Charger (BC) to supply the Boost charging of the Batteries.
3. During normal operation FC will be in ON condition & BC will be in OFF condition.
4. The FC & BC are connected with interlocking contactor.
5. Whenever battery needs boost charging BC cuts in supplying the boost charging, at this
stage FC will be isolated from battery & will supply the load.
6. During momentary contactor changeover, battery supplies the load through tap cell.
7. When FC fails, BC is automatically cut off and Battery starts supplying the load current.
8. The maximum voltage available at the load terminals at any time is equal to that of float
voltage.

25. Dual Float Cum Boost Charger
1. This system consists of two Float Cum Boost Chargers (FCBC1 & FCBC2).
2. In this configuration both the chargers are designed to supply both Load and Battery Charging
current.
3. During normal operation FCBC-1 is in ON condition and FCBC-2 is OFF.
4. In case of manual mode one FCBC supplies to load and another to battery, the FCBC
connected to load will not go to boost mode.
5. This unit is designed in such a way that if FCBC-1 fails, FCBC-2 comes in line automatically and
takes care of both load as well as battery charging currents.

26. Float Charger & Float Cum Boost
Charger
1. The FC & FCBC has one float charger & one float cum boost charger.
2. This charger employs power SCRs / Diodes in Full wave Half controlled/ Full wave Full
Controlled.
3. The Float Charger supplies both load and battery trickle charging currents while FCBC remains
in OFF condition remotely.
4. Whenever battery needs boost charging, FC gets isolated from battery through contactor &
supplies load whereas FCBC takes care of the boost charging of the battery.
5. Provision is available to operate the FCBC in Float mode to supply load when FC is failed.
6. At the time of mains failure the isolated contactor gets closed & battery gets connected to the
load.
7. During contactor changeovers, continuity of DC power to load is maintained.

27. Hot Standby Redundant System
1. This System Consists of two Float Chargers and two Boost Chargers.
2. In this Configuration both the Chargers are designed to Supply Load and Battery Charging
Current.
3. During normal operation FC1,BC1 is in ON Condition and FC2,BC2 is OFF.
4. This Unit is Designed in such a way that if FC1,BC1 Fails FC2,BC2 comes in line automatically
and takes care of both Load as well as Battery Charging Current

28. Parallel Redundant System Using Two
Nos. FCBC + Two Batteries
1. This system consists of two Float Cum Boost Chargers (FCBC1 to FCBC2) and two Battery Bank.
2. In this Configuration each Charger Charger the respective Battery Bank and designed to supply
