The transition of the power sector towards a renewable energy based electricity supply requires in many cases the integration of high shares of non-conventional generation into the existing infrastructure. Changes in the physical characteristics and the conditions to operate these grids are consequently introduced. The technical challenges associated with these changes have particular impact in islands, where the grids are small and the flexibility that is offered by system interconnection is not available.
Successful integration experiences in islands have demonstrated that these challenges can be overcome. Reliable and efficient supply of electricity is possible, if a consistent planning process, considering the particularities of each island and the links between different sectors and stakeholders, takes place. Through renewable energy roadmaps, grid integration studies and technical trainings IRENA has supported the planning of the transformation of the electricity systems in Small Island Developing States at a global level. In this presentation IRENA will share the lessons learned within its work and its vision of the deployment of renewable energies in island states for the following years.

Renewable Energy Act of 2008 - Seven Years After
With a population of almost 100 million people and annual economic growth averaging between 6 to 7%, the Philippines’ is anticipated to continue to have a robust energy demand. The Government’s refusal to subsidize power, heavy reliance on expensive fossil fuel imports, and added transmission cost because of the country’s archipelagic configuration have resulted in electricity prices being among the highest in the world. Thus, renewable energy projects present a viable business opportunity to resource developers.
The business community believes that the introduction of retail competition and open access is the logical move to bring the power industry to the next level and establish a competitive market structure. There is a need to further diversify the energy mix and the government is banking on renewable energy to wean the country from its dependence on fossil fuel. The government through the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 (“RE Act”) sought to address the issues on the absence of a ready and guaranteed market for the output of RE power plants and the recovery of investments through electricity tariffs.
Coupling Universal Energy Access with Financial Sustainability: the Case of L...
Modern energy access is an essential precondition for economic development. It is essential for poverty reduction, improvement of human health, women’s empowerment, education. With access to reliable and affordable energy services, local entrepreneurs and companies of any size can generate local jobs, income and, thereby, promote local development, in particular in rural and peri- urban areas. The major barriers toward improving rural electricity connectivity in Africa include: absence of national grid in large part of the country, high cost of delivering electricity to rural areas, high upfront investment costs; scattered settlements in the rural areas leading to long and costly distribution lines. Other challenges are harsh terrains and inaccessibility due to underdeveloped infrastructure leading to high cost of rural electrification projects; high operating costs of grids in rural areas due to low population density.
For these reasons, several experts suggest that the extension of the main grid is not the most economical viable solution to grant energy access to rural communities. In most of the case, and especially in Tanzania, the best option is the realization of renewable source powered mini-grid (both grid-connected and off-grid). This option, if carefully analyzed, allows to reach more and more rural clients and at the same time to increase the share of renewable energy production.
Experience, however, has shown that it is not enough to simply create a new mini-grid and hope for local economic activities to pick up just by themselves. Countless electrification projects have suffered from a low demand response from the commercial sector that ended up affecting plans and expectations. This usually determines two significant consequences: First, the hoped-for impact of electrification programmes on the development of local communities often struggles to materialize. Secondly, the electrification schemes suffer from a lack of new customers able to pay for their electricity connection and use the new availability of electricity for productive purposes. Such developments have undermined the entire economic viability, and thus sustainability, of many electrification programs in developing countries. This paper explores the concrete steps to be put in place in order to increase the financial sustainability of a mini-grid, in order to couple universal access to modern energy services with sound financial sustainability of the systems providing electricity. To show that, it will take in account a feasibility study that CEFA is doing the Luganga site, Tanzania.
Analysis of Solar Diesel Hybrid off Grid System in Myanmar
A hybrid system combining renewable technologies with diesel generators is a promising solution for village electrification. Shortage of electricity is the main obstacle for economic and social development. Myanmar has abundant renewable energy resource. There are many places that cannot supply electricity from the main grid. Tat Thit Kyun village is selected from these areas. The selected village where is situated Latitude 18°44N and Longitude 95°11E 5.6 mile away from Padaung Township is supplied by hybrid off grid system. 312 kWh demand is needed for 387 numbers of household. Data is obtained from Meteorological data of the village and NASA. The hybrid system is composed of photovoltaic source, diesel generator, battery energy storage system and converter. The hybrid system is analyzed for the life time 20 years by using HOMER software. EPIRA works, ended NPC monopoly, now more wholesale and retail competition

To encourage more gencos and players, government bureaucracy, permits and regulations should shrink and decline. c. Reduce taxes, fees, royalties on oil and natural gas. Better yet, abolish royalties. d. Lower further the threshold of Open Access. Electricity consumers can choose their own power suppliers; small but many power suppliers/generators can compete for end users/consumers, by-pass distribution utilities (Dus)
