According to the Wikipedia, the induction furnace is an electrical furnace in which the heat is applied by induction heating of metal. Induction furnace capacities range from less than one kilogram to one hundred tonnes capacity and are used to melt iron and steel copper, aluminium and precious metals.
It is an electric furnace for heating a material using an induced current generated by an induction coil. The material will be placed in a crucible made of refractory material if the metal material is heated. If the non-metallic material is heated, the material is placed in a graphite crucible.
Resistance heating deals with the heating of conducting materials, metallic or non-metallic, in which an electrical current (DC or AC) flows.
In Direct Resistance Heating (DRH) the electrical current flows directly in the con-ducting workpiece to be heated; in Indirect Resistance Heating (IRH) the current flows in special resistance elements, from which the heat is transferred to the work-piece by radiation and convection. Resistace elements and workpiece are situated in a furnace.
Both heating systems must be conveniently designed in order to maximize efficiency and obtaining the desired heating pattern in the workpiece.
In the course the following topics will be dealt with:
• DRH with DC supply
• DRH with AC supply
• Characteristics of DRH bar heating installations
• IRH resistance furnaces
• Materials and design of IRH furnaces
• DRH and IRH heating systems efficiency

Induction Heating – Operation, Applications and Case Studies - Presentation S...Leonardo ENERGY
The industrial process heating applications that use electrotechnologies have been found to improve product quality, productivity, energy efficiency, reduce energy intensity and have many other non-energy benefits. Induction technology is another electrotechnology based heating method for heating electrical conductive materials. It involves sending an alternating current (AC) through a copper coil which surrounds the material to be heated or melted. When a metal is placed inside the coil and enters the magnetic field, circulating eddy currents are induced within the metal. The resistance of the metal to the flow of the eddy currents causes the metal to heat up. In this webcast, the operation principles of induction heating technology used for both heating and melting, its applications and EPRI case studies will be presented. The information of vendors as well as other links to reference materials will be presented at the end.
Coal stored outdoors on the stockpile or delivered by unit train or barges picks up moisture from rain and snow. When this wet or frozen coal is conveyed, it inevitably comes into contact with the plate steel of the various hoppers and chutes within the coal handling system. During winter, this plate steel is below freezing for extended periods.
When wet or frozen coal encounters steel at sub freezing temperatures an instantaneous bond is formed. This bond causes immediate and often catastrophic blockage of the hopper and chutes. The bond and resultant blockage is so severe that pneumatic drilling equipment and explosives are often required to free up the system.
This problem, known as FLASH FREEZING, is extremely inconvenient and very costly. Several cases are documented where utility and industrial boilers have been shut down due to blocked conveying systems.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

5. DIRECT RESISTANCE HEATING
The material or charge to be heated is taken as
resistance and current is passed through it.
The charge may be in the form of powder, pieces or a
liquid.
Two electrodes are immersed in the charge and
connected to the supply in case of availability of direct
current or single phase ac supply and three electrodes
are immersed in the charge if it is 3-phase supply.
The current flow throughs the charge and heat is produced.
This method has high efficiency since heat is produced in the charge itself.
As the current is not variable, hence automatic temperature control is not possible.
When some pieces of metals are to be heated some highly resistive powder is sprinkled over
the surface of pieces to avoid direct short circuit.
6. INDIRECTRESISTANCE HEATING
The current is passed through a wire or other high resistance
forming a heating element.
The heat proportional to I2R losses produced in the heating
element is delivered to the charge by one of the mode of
transfer of heat (conduction/convection/radiation).
If the heat transfer is by conduction the resistor must be in
contact with the charge.
An enclosure known as heating chamber, is required for heat
transfer by radiation and convection for the charge
This arrangement provides a uniform temperature.
Automatic temperature control can be provided in this case.
This method of heating is used in Room Heaters, Immersion Water heater & in various
Resistance Ovens for cooking and salt bath.
For industrial purposes, where a large amount of charge is to be heated, the heating element
is kept in a cylinder surrounded by jacket containing the charge.
7. RESISTANCE OVENS
• Resistance furnaces may be classified according to their operating temperature.
• Low temperature heating chamber with provision for ventilation is termed as oven.
• Resistance ovens are used for drying and baking potteries, drying varnish coatings,
vulcanizing and hardening of synthetic materials and commercial and domestic heating.
They are also employed for tempering hardened steel pieces.
• Medium temperature furnaces having operating temperatures between 300°C and
1,050°C are employed for annealing, normalizing of steel and non-ferrous metals,
melting of non-ferrous metals and stove enameling.
• High temperature furnaces having operating temperatures between 1,050°C and 1,350°C
are employed for hardening applications.
• The resistance oven is constructed of firebricks or other heat insulating material
supported on a metal framework. The heating elements are mounted on the top, sides
or bottom of the oven, according to circumstances.
8. RESISTANCE FURNACE
The nature of material required for the insulation is determined by the maximum
temperature of the inner face of the layer of insulation of a heating chamber.
The heating elements are mounted on top, sides or bottom of the oven as the circumstances
permit.
The resistance furnace is an enclosure with a
refractory lining: a surrounding layer of heat
insulation and outer casing of steel plate, bricks or
tiles.
The inside proportions of a heating chamber are
made to suit the character of the charge and type of
furnace or oven.
9. • Should have HIGH SPECIFIC RESISTANCE, so that small length of
wire may be sufficient to produce required amount of heatHIGHRESISTIVITY:
• Melting point of material to be used for heating element should
be high so that change can be heated to a high temperature.High Melting Point:
• The material for heating element should have low temperature
coefficient so that resistance may not vary with the change in
temperature otherwise starting current would be high.
Low Temperature
Coefficient
• The material for heating should be such that it may withstand the
required temperature without getting oxidized, otherwise it would
have to be replaced frequently.
