3. Jose Rizal's El Filibusterismo was printed in Ghent,
Belgium on September 18, 1891.
The novel was dedicated in memory of the executed
priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto
Zamora known as the “Gomburza.”
Rizal took 3 years to write his second novel.
Rizal began writing El Filibusterismo in October 1887
while he was in Calamba.In London (1888), he revised
the plot and some chapters. Rizal continued to work on
his manuscript in Paris.

It was funded by Rizal’s
friend Valentin Ventura.

The message of the novel is clear: the present
system of governing the Philippines through

the friars and being submissive to their interests
in one fashion or another, can only lead to
disaster for Spain.
