According to a report by Legal Services of NJ:
1) Over 250,000 New Jersey residents aged 65 and over, or 42.6% of the state's elder population, live below the Elder Economic Security Standard Index.
2) Elders living alone/single person households are more likely to fall below the index, with 58% below it, compared to 29.2% of elder couples.
3) Certain demographic groups have higher rates of falling below the index, including Hispanics/Latinos (83.7%), Blacks (71.9%), women (60.8%), and those aged 75+ (63%).
There is a significant mismatch in New Jersey between where large numbers of older residents live and which municipalities are most prepared to accommodate them. This report matches every municipality against four age-friendliness indicators, and analyzes the degree to which New Jersey's older residents are living in places that, from a land-use perspective, are not prepared to accommodate their changing needs.
Thank you so much to all those who attended the 13th annual Smart Growth Awards. We are so proud of our winners, and grateful to our Board of Trustees, sponsors and staff whose hard work made the event possible.
Congratulations to Joseph J. Maraziti Jr. Esq., the recipient of the Cary Edwards Leadership Award, who summed up the purpose of "smart growth" best by quoting Albert Camus: Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present.
