Editor's Notes

  • Placing books where people are likely to use them is an excellent way to inspire reading. The Free Library may be placed in high traffic areas. People are welcome to take a book or leave a book. Literacy and community sharing are promoted at the same time.

For more information, please visit: https://littlefreelibrary.org/.
  • Example from Traverse City, Michigan.
  • Movies have long served a function to bring people together for fun and entertainment. Showing classic films or ones that have a tie-in and connection with the community or region is an excellent way to celebrate the place. Whether inside or outside, or just a handful of people or several hundred, the power of film draws people together.

    Materials Needed
King or queen sized sheet OR white tarp
    Projector
    Speakers
Note: Review licensing requirements to make sure your work complies with all relevant copyright laws. Libraries often have special licensing rates and might be a good partner.
  • Someone came up with an idea to take an old-fashioned upright piano, paint it vibrant colors, and place it on the sidewalk. Add a cover and your piano will last longer. Invite people who actually know how to play and develop a schedule of planned and impromptu performance times throughout they year then it might become a cherished institution in your town.

  • Urban agriculture is the practice of cultivating, processing, and distributing food. This may involve animal husbandry, aquaculture, agroforestry, urban beekeeping, and horticulture. A parking space, yards, roof-tops, sidewalks, and balconies may be used for agricultural purposes.
  • Elevated beds with permanent irrigation, terraces, and manageable width allows them to be cultivated from either side.
  • Use pallet slats to build a planter box inside of a shipping pallet. Line planting area with landscape fabric. Fill with dirt and plants.

    Materials Needed
    Clean shipping pallet
    Landscape fabric
    Screws
    Plants and dirt
  • Examples of pallet garden, planter boxes, and vertical structure from Middlesborough, Kentucky. Also notice the guerilla wayfinding signage in the background.
  • Alleys may be converted into plazas. Some tactics involve putting a higher grade and level paving material to make them pedestrian friendly. Hang lights overhead. And if vehicle access is not necessary, line them with tables and chairs. This tactic also works well for narrow streets that may be adapted for pedestrian use.
  • Green wall as part of alley conversion in Princeton, New Jersey.
  • Playing is an important tool to bring people together. From an oversize chess board, to bocce, to cornhole, the ways to encourage play in your downtown are limitless. A cart designed for carrying games with or without attendant is another way to bring play to any street or sidewalk.
  • Jumbo Connect Four is perfect for kids and adults alike.
  • These chairs are made from shipping pallets. They help to divert waste from landfills and build community. Placing chairs like this on streets and sidewalks is referred to as “chair bombing.”
  • It all starts with finding a pallet. You need a minimum of two pallets for one chair. Look for the “HT” stamp on the side that stands for heat-treated and avoid MB which stands for methyl bromide that is toxic.
  • Once the chairs are cut to specified dimensions you have a pallet chair kit ready for assembly.
  • Gather a few people together and make an event out of building the chairs. It will require collaboration and cooperation. If you really want to see people be creative don’t give them the 16 page instruction manual. The capacity of humans to figure things out is truly amazing.

  • Seating can come in many forms. Whether it be chairs made from pallets, benches, or steps fabricated for people to sit on – there are many ways to encourage people to sit, stay a while, and enjoy themselves. William H. Whyte probably said it best: “People tend to sit most where there are places to sit.”

  • These fairly inexpensive and easy to produce stencils help to deliver a message wherever folks are passing through town. Some are called “positive graffiti” and are intended to uplift by design.
  • “It’s Good to be Here” in Middlesborough, Kentucky, is based on a similar project by artist Candy Chang from New Orleans.
  • Much can be done to make cyclists feel welcome. A valet service allows for easy drop off and pick up as people go about doing their business. Including repair services along with valet is an excellent opportunity to create added value for cyclists while the bicycle is waiting to be picked up. Bike share programs are growing in increasing popularity. Often a credit card system is used to pick up bikes at one point and drop them off at another. A small fee is charged based on the duration of travel, or no fee at all if it is for just a short time.
