2. Write Your Response - Act. 1
What is a search engine?
What does it do?
What does it actually search?
Explain how you think it works when you
search for something.
3. Searching Effectively
We need to search for information quickly and
effectively. Sometimes that can be difficult.
This lesson is going to give you strategies to
assist you in finding what you need.
Watch the video on below on Web Search
Strategies in Plain English and then continue
these slides.
4. How Does It Work? Act. 2
When we use search engines, we enter key
words (things we are searching for). We need
to use operators to help us be more specific.
Operators are words like NOT and OR. They
are used to remove or add results to our
searches.
5. NOT, OR, AND Means
NOT means that we don’t want to receive
something as a result.
OR means we want EITHER thing 1 or thing 2.
AND means both things have to be present
6. Let’s Try Something
Search 1: “students”
Search 2: “girl”
Search 3: “girl” OR “boy”
Search 4: “student” NOT “wearing”
“red” “shoes”
Search 5: “boy” AND “hat”
In a classroom full
of students, can
you imagine who
would be standing
and who would be
sitting using each
of these search
terms?
7. Quotes
There’s something else that’s important to know
about search engines. Does anyone know what
happens if you use quotes around your words or
phrases?
What do you think the difference would be if you
search Georgie Washington with and without
quotes?
8. Quotes
Having quotation marks around your search
words or phrase will find the exact words in
the exact same order on a page. The search
engine will not bring back any pages that
don’t have those exact words. You can see
how this might really help you find just what
you want.
9. Boolify Activity
Go into your Google Chrome Browser and
1. search for Dolphins
a. What do you think will appear?
b. What actually happened?
2. Using the operators we learned, how do we
search to find just the mammals?
10. Activity On Your Own
Watch the videos below to learn all about
online searching the right way! Then you will
complete some activities to show your
learning.
