several depictions of Santa
Claus for Harper's Weekly,
establishing the contemporary
image of this Christmas
legend. This cartoon comes
from around 1881.

In‘Social Documentary Photography’the photographer is a one man army without any supporting elements like controlled

aking a photograph is now faster and easier than it ever has been. But
capturing an image that carries a story, inspires a feeling and choosing
which photo to share, when to share and where to share needs skill
and talent.
HereweintroducePanteaNaghaviAnaraki,anemergingyoungphotographer
from Iran, the womb of creative talents from time immemorial.
Migrated from the port city Bandar Abbas, at the southern most end of Iran,
Pantea Naghavi Anaraki now lives in Tehran – the capital, to satisfy her lust in
art and photography.
I came across Pantea Naghavi three years back as a National Geographic
Social Community member. An attraction to her photographic style and
wonderful black and white conversions kept me in an enthusiasm to follow
her work.
In due course, I noticed that the slightest change in her attitude towards the
photographic branch she chose, leaves her in complete bewilderment. That
confidence and straight forward approach to the point she targeted made
me to point her out in the crowd.
And this conversation displays how one can become a growing and glowing
talent if he or she is gifted with an ultimate determination.
Pantea’s photographs portray the inner pain and sufferings embedded in the
life of contemporary Iranian community, especially the female gender.
While in the Tabriz earthquake site or in the Mines of Hormuz island and
interviewing FGMs there, she loves to document the genomic identity
omnipresent in Iranian people. This unique attribute makes her images full
of thoughtful messages.
As a person, she is smart and communicative and a life loving lady who
carries a mind full of lofty thoughts.
A recent interview published in the EyeEm blog adds luster to her career.
How did you feel the first inspiration that you should become a
photographer?
Actually, I inherited this talent from my father. During my childhood days my
father used to project transparencies on a wall at home, photographed by
him using his Kodak 110 camera. On those shows, I witnessed how my aunts
and uncles were growing up and how places were destroyed or changed.
When I went to school I used to carry that camera and I felt something new
when I look at the world through its viewfinder. I can see things in more
detail, smiles of people, landscapes everything appeared in a different
perspective. Since then, I tried to convince my parents to let me leave to
Tehran for learning photography. But only at the age of 25, I succeeded in
that effort and by that time I confirmed that it is photography, the only thing
in which I can perform best.
What were your efforts to achieve that goal?
I always depend on self-learning. To nourish my English I used to listen to
English songs and when I reached Tehran I just got in to the photographic
community to understand different aspects of it, such as News,
Documentary, Fashion, Studio, etc. I tried to learn lighting in a photography
studio for some time but soon felt uncomfortable in that genre – either in
modeling or fashion. By that time I made friends with some wonderful social
documentary photographers in Iran, like Majid Saeedi and Hossein Fatemi.
That set out a turning point in my career. Then I was in the right place and I
did my internship with them.
Kindly share some inspiring moments, experiences from your
photographic life.

of Iran, planning a feature about FGM victims (Female Genitalia Mutilation)
but they didn’t allow me to photograph them, saying that the government
would abandon them if they gave an interview or got photographed. A 26
year old girl, also an FGM, got convinced but commented that her future
husband would beat her if he became aware of my photography.
In another village in Qeshm, named Pey Posht I had a typical experience.
They are more traditional and have a belief that if a man doesn’t have at least
three wives, he is not considered as a man there. They don’t allow girls to
study beyond IIIrd standard at school and after that they should stay at home
making handicraft or have a husband at a younger age. Because of their hard

belief in Islam they just spoke up to me but didn’t allow
any kind of photography.
I used to convert these mishaps in to inspirations. How
Strange customs and beliefs do exist in this world. I
became aware of such things only when I set out to do
documentaryphotography.Gatheringsuchinformation,
witnessing those typical life styles and encountering
weird things is always an inspiration to me. I never
thought that these unsatisfied women would still marry
these kinds of men. Every new group of people I came
across, enriched me with a new feel and loaded my
inner self with inspiration.
Now what do you feel about your present position
in your photographic life ?
I think I am in the right track now. But still I have the urge
to learn more and more and I must grow up day by day.
I have a long term planning for myself.
How do people reciprocate (especially women)
when a young girl like you approaches them to
photograph their daily life? Do they feel more
comfortable with you?
Yes, I think, sometimes girls can capture better photos
than men do in our society. But finally everything
depends on your face expression, reaction and public
communication. You should convince your next person
with a smile and say a good reason to capture his or
her picture. I never do any clicks without permission. I
remember, once an aged woman gave her permission
to shoot only after conducting a friendly chat for half
an hour. But in all such instances I somehow managed
to hit the goal and I strongly believe that, the magic
played there, was my down to earth personality and
truthfulness.
What are the challenges one has to face, in the run for recognition as a
social documentary photographer?
It’s really tough to be famous in this profession and you need to keep up to
date communication and relations to get your work published. Even if they
accept, here we need to procure some sanction from authorities and after all
receiving the payment is too difficult. But first of all you should create a strong
and different story that has never been published or exhibited anywhere else
until then. Then only you will get noticed by someone outside the country. So
the vital element of recognition is keeping good communication, being active
in the field and delivering top rated content.
Share some experiences you had, while working at Tabriz earthquake
site and in the Mines of Qeshm island.
I went to Tarbiz with a friend of mine and that journey was utmost tiring and
painful to recollect. Hardship and struggle could be seen everywhere, dead
cows, lack of good food, no cleaning staff or sanitary facility for women etc.

And with a bang, the cold season was approaching then and one could see
fear and hope together in the eyes of everyone, about the nearing future.
The government granted 12 million Tomans for rehabilitation but the local
authorities said the people won’t need even 2 million to repair the cracks and
all.
The situation was very pathetic and the children were malnourished. Tarbiz
scribbled a painful memory in me forever. But the Ochre Mines of Qushm
island has to narrate a different story. The workers there were kind enough
to me, since I could speak their language, understand their life and the story
behind it and I cared about their sickness. Traditionally, the ochre was used in
everything from decorative arts to wedding ceremonies and even as a spice
for fish andTorshi (pickled vegetables). Now it is transported by the truckloads
and exported.
Ochre is mined by a company connected to some government critic, but
residents here doesn't resent or care little for such things.
The workers must drink milk every day to sustain
their immunity in that surroundings and they are
paid less by the athorities. The machines also are
very old and unreliable. Payment is only $400 for
supervisors and $300 for ordinary workers. The
factory pays attention only to the valuable earth
they dig out and not to the worker’s life.
What style of work do you like to follow? Do
you feel a scope in choosing that branch for a
sustainable life in Iran?
I love social documentary, I love to intermingle with
people, they give me inspiration, hope and I feel it
will make me grow. This is why I can’t shift to another
branch of photography even though it provides
more material benefit. This one fills my soul with
energy.
Is it a wise decision to continue as a freelancer
in Iran, to make a living, when comparing the
investments and returns?
No it is not wise because you can't earn money from
being a freelancer, news or social documentary
photographer in Iran. Maybe once you become very
famous or become a photography judge, then your
name gets branded and at that time only it would be.
No comparisons possible there on balance sheets.
Would you give a general advice to girls who
want to choose photography seriously in India,
rather than ending up in clicks for Facebook
posts and mobile sharing?
Of course, if they think it's their way, whether they
can see the world in a different perspective than
normal people do and if they feel they can help to
show the world the situations faced by the people

or peculiarities of the place they live, then let's move out in
full gear with confidence. And if you want to output creative
images, not just depend on books or classes but also try to view
as many photos as possible every day. Be honest, take advice,
but never be disappointed.
Girls, I am here to provide you with emotional thrust to your
feelings and shall we begin right now itself?
Try to show your works to photo agencies and it's going to be
the first step of encouragement to make stronger images. Sure
you will get a good scrutiny and feedback from them.
And I hope one day I will see a lot of girls in top positions in the
list of best photographers in the world.
My best wishes to all of you there.

PRICING
The second crucial element in marketing mix is the
pricing of products. Pricing the product is one of
the important acts in marketing decision making.
It is the exchange of value of goods and services
in terms of money. Even today pricing in some
firms is simply based on concepts of costs, market
position, competition and necessary profits. The
advantage in using monetary standards is that the
buyer can use a universally accepted medium of
exchange for any other commodity or service de-
sired. The exchange value is called price.
IMPORTANCE OF ‘PRICE’ IN BUSINESS
Price and pricing policies are among the most im-
portant problems that confront management to-
day. The value and utility of a product have to be
set against the price of it. In perfect market, price
is determined by supply and demand. This is as-
sumed that there are many buyers and sellers, that
buyers are fully informed of the supply available
and is free to come into the market or to go out of
the market at will.
FUNDAMENTALS WHICH MAY AFFECT
THE DECISION OF PRICE SETTING
Consumer situation
Utility to the buyer
Return to the buyer
Comparable and substitute products- actual and
anticipated
Custom and customary prices
Prestige position of product and brand
Presence of buying habits and motives
Psychological aspects
COST CONSIDERATIONS
Cost of production- historical
Cost of production- future
Volume anticipated
BASIC PRICING POLICIES
It is quite unfortunate that many firms have no clear pric-
ing policies. The following are however, the basic poli-
cies recognized for pricing.
1. Cost-oriented pricing policy
2. Demand-oriented pricing policy
3. Competition-oriented pricing policy
1. COST ORIENTED PRICING POLICY:- It is also re-
ferred to as ‘cost-plus’ pricing. The pricing method
assures that no product is sold at a loss, since the
price covers the full cost incurred. Definitely, cost
furnishes a good point from which the computa-
tion of price could begin. Fixing a tentative price is
easier under this method. But the criticism against
this policy is that this method is weak and ignores
completely the influences of competition and mar-
ket demand.
Cost plus policies are often used by retail traders
and in manufacturing industries where the produc-
tion is non-standardized. The method of pricing here
is based on simple arithmetic adding a fixed percent-
age to the unit cost. Another common method used
for cost-oriented pricing is known as target pricing.
This is invariably adopted by manufacturers who fix
a target return on its total cost.
2. DEMAND ORIENTED PRICING POLICY:- As the
name suggests under, this method of pricing the
demand is the pivotal factor. Price is fixed by simply
adjusting it to the market conditions. A high price is
charged when or where the demand is intense, and

a low price is charged when the demand is low. Price
discrimination is usually adopted under such market
situation.
3. COMPETITION ORIENTED PRICING POLICY:- Most
companies set prices after careful consideration of
competitive price structure. Deliberate policies may
be formulated to sell above, below or generally in
a line with competition. One important feature
of this method is that there cannot be any rigid
relation between its price and its own cost of
demand. Its own cost of demand may change,
but the firm maintains its prices. Conversely the
same firm will change its prices when the com-
petitors change theirs, even if its own costs or
demand have not altered.
