The socio-economic status make-up of an individual Influences habitual physical activity and plays an important role in one’s achievements in every field of life, including performance in sports. The current study aimed to assess the effect of socio-economic status determined by parental education and family income on the effective students’ participation in physical activity sessions at RAK Medical& Health Sciences University. The study demonstrated significant positive correlation between physical activity levels of the students and mother education (r=0.139, p=0.05) and family income (r = 0.182, p= 0.01), while father education had no significant effect on the level of students’ physical activity (r =0.030, p=0.676). Conversely, a significant negative correlation was noted between the physical activity levels of the students and number of family members (r = -0.130, p= 0.068). The study also revealed that the majority (114/198, 52%) of students were in the medium socio-economic status category. In addition, students with low socio-economic status were more likely to display low physical activity whereas students with high socio-economic status were more likely to display high physical activity.
The impact of physical activity on academic performance among medical and hea...Dr. Mohammed Abou Elmagd
Physical activity is a crucial component of school curricula as it is suggested to increase the students’ academic performance. Physical activity barriers can affect the student’s participation in sports in response to the concern that medical college students face different difficulties and fall under tremendous stressors, which can interfere with the desired academic performance. The current study aimed to identify the barriers hindering the effective students’ participation in physical activities at RAK Medical and Health Sciences University. The study demonstrated significant negative correlation between physical activity and overload of study (r = -0.305 p<0.001). However, the correlation was higher for female students with significant difference. Correlation among colleges showed significant correlation with the lack of facilities. This study will allow concerned people to find solutions and increase students participation in physical activities, which in turn promotes positive self-esteem and gives them confidence to do things and confront social challenges and ultimately improve their academic performance.
Physical Activity Level Analyses and Chronic-Degenerative Disease Risks In Do...IJERDJOURNAL
Abstract:- It is of common belief that physical activity can restore damages caused to people's health due to the stressful everyday work routine. The energy expenditure on physical activities is directly related to the frequency, duration and intensity of human movements developed on many tasks. Thus, the main objective of this paper was to evaluate this energy consumption in public school teachers from the city of Horizonte, Ceara, discussing about degenerative chronic disease risks. 30 teachers, 9 men and 21 women within the age of 25 to 59 years old, were evaluated. Their Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated in order to classify them as normal, overweight and obese. As an instrument, the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnarie (IPAQ) was used, once it is more recommended to national prevalence studies due to the possibility of international comparison. This instrument contains several questions related to frequency (days per week) and duration (time per day) spent on moderate and vigorous physical activities and walking. The questionnarie also captures the energy expenditure in METs, in order to classify the selected individuals according to intensity: “sedentary” (< 1,5 METs), “low” (1,5 < METs < 3,0), “moderate” (3,9 < METs < 5,9) and “high” (≥ 6,0 METs). These analyses were performed using the Epi Info™ program, which used descriptive statistics. The results showed that the teachers present a good level of physical activity with 46,67% classified as high, 40% as moderate and 13,13% as low. The individuals also presented significant degree of overweight and obesity, 43% and 34% respectively, and only 23% within the acceptable weight range. Therefore, it could be concluded that, among the modifiable risk factors, the physical activity and the body mass control play important roles when it comes to chronic-degenerative disease prevention
Levels of Physical Activity Participation of the Staff of Universiti SelangorIOSR Journals
Abstract: This study is carried out to identify the levels of the Universiti Selangor (Unisel) staff’s participation
in physical activities. It aims to investigate the stages of their physical activities to determine whether these
activities are beneficial to them or otherwise. This study is a descriptive survey research of which the data has
been collected via questionnaire from 231 employees of Unisel in Bestari Jaya Campus. Respondents are asked
questions about their physical activities based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPIQ). The
findings reveal that many members of the staff of the Universiti Selangor practice physical activities as their
way of life. However, the level of their participation in physical activities has not reached a satisfactory level.
The respondents often carry out physical activities, but mostly their participation is still considered within the
range of average to low level. The respondents’ participation in physical activities is influenced by their attitude
which seeks acknowledgment rather than practicing it as a healthy lifestyle. The findings shows that the
employees’ physical activity participation is very high. However, they do not carry out the activities according
to the principles of physical activity domain. This study concludes that there are still many Unisel staff members
that seldom treat physical activities as their everyday routines. The findings show that 106 of the respondents
carry out physical activities at a low level, 49 of the respondents at the medium level and 76 of the respondents
at a high level. The findings are insufficient to establish that the respondents have carried out the best physical
activity practice. The results conclude that these Unisel staff members still need to be guided and educated in
order to ensure that their participation in physical activities becomes a healthy lifestyle that is led by the whole
community.

A Study on the Relationship between Nutrition Status and Physical Fitness of ...IOSR Journals
Abstract: Nutritional status during school age is a major determinant of nutritional and health status in adult
life. Many studies showed that under nutrition and anaemia had an adverse impact on performance and
consequently led to reduction in wages for persons employed in manual labour.
The past three decades have witnessed the emergence of over nutrition as a problem in school-age children in
developed countries and in affluent urban segments in developing countries. The main determinants of
performance are physical fitness and skill. Longitudinal studies have shown that the lifestyle and physical
fitness during childhood and adolescence were major determinants of lifestyle, physical fitness and freedom
from non-communicable diseases in adult life.
Cardiovascular diseases are considered as one of the threats to human
health, especially, in individuals with overweight. The aim of this study was to
investigate the effect of eight-week aerobic exercises in 10 to 12 years old overweight
girls. In this study, 27 overweight female student whit 10-12 years old were selected
and were randomly divided into two groups; a) training group (n=17) and b) control
group (n=10). Training group participated into the aerobic training for 8 weeks, with
70-85 percent of heart rate reserve maximum, 3 times a week and 60 minutes in each
session. The variables such as BF, BMI, WHR and VO2max, were measured in two
groups before and after the training period. The average of variables such as BF, BMI
and VO2max were significantly different between two groups (P<0.05). But the
average of WHR were not significantly different between two groups. According to
these results, aerobic exercise in 10-12 years old overweight girls, can have beneficial
effects on some cardiovascular risk factors.

The prevalence of childhood obesity has been increasing rapidly and there is general consensus that good nutritional practices and physical activity should be encouraged as early as possible in life. The aim of this study was to describe and to compare the current lifestyle and dietary pattern of normal weight (NW) and overweight + obese (OW+OB) male adolescents who are physically active.
Methods: This observational and retrospective study was based on clinical records analysis of male adolescents aged 11-18 years who had undergone a medical evaluation at a Medical Sport Centre (Pavia, Italy) during 2009, and had filled in a self-administered life style questionnaire.
Results: The results showed that out of 1423 clinical records 23.0% of subjects were OW, 5.4% OB and 71.6% NW. We invited all the overweight and obese subjects to participate in the study, 308 of them (75.8%) agreed. Then we randomly enrolled an equivalent number of NW participants (n=308) in the medical evaluation at the sports center with similar characteristics as for socio-economic status, physical activity and age for a whole sample of 616 subjects. We handled them a validated lifestyle questionnaire. The questionnaire analysis was used to compare OW+OB and NW participants, as far as eating habits, sedentary activities and time spent in sports. All the subjects frequently skipped breakfast, did not consume fruit and vegetables daily and had a high soft drinks intake. Inverse correlations were found between weight and physical activity (p=0.01). Sedentary activities were preferred by about 25% and 66 % of the NW and OW+OB groups respectively. The percentage of smokers was similar within the two groups (14%).
Conclusions: Adolescents eating habits are incorrect, despite BMI and sports practice. Sports practice seems contributing to lower spare time physical inactivity, but does not improve eating habits. Public health interventions should focus on the reinforcement of leisure time physical activity, besides nutrition education and behavioral education programs in order to prevent obesity in the adulthood.

Assessment of Physical Activity Level in Adults with Intellectual Disabilitie...Remedypublications1
Beside health benefits, the impact of physical activity on individuals with intellectual disabilities is
evident in all the spheres of life, such as psychological, social and cognitive development. The goal of
this research was to examine the physical activity level in persons with intellectual disabilities, who
are users of habilitation programs.
Thirty-six parents of persons with intellectual disabilities participated in the study. An appropriate
sample was used in referential centre's and associations caring for persons with intellectual
disabilities older than 21 years of age. We used the International Physical Activity Questionnaire
(IPAQ) to evaluate the physical activity and Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) for quality of life.
The results show that the total level of physical activity in persons with intellectual disabilities,
evaluated by their parents and expressed through MET-minutes/week, is high (M=3434.7). No
differences were found with regard to gender and the intellectual disability category. Quality of life
estimated by the parents was positively correlated with the inclusion of persons with intellectual
disabilities into a physical activity.
This study gives insight in the physical activity level of persons with intellectual disabilities and
implicates the importance of their inclusion in various centre's for rehabilitation and occupational
activities.
ABSTRACT- Background: Malnutrition constitutes a major public health concern worldwide and serves as an indicator
of hospitalized patient’s prognosis. Nutritional support is an essential aspect of the clinical management of children
admitted to hospital. Malnutrition has been long associated with poor quality, poor diet and inadequate access to health
care, and it remains a key global health issue that both stems from and contributes to weakness, with 50% of childhood
deaths due to principal under nutrition.
Methods: The present hospital based cross sectional study was conducted in April to Dec 2015 among 300 rural
adolescents of 9-18 years age (146 boys and 154 girls) attending the outpatient department at Patna Medical College and
Hospital, Bihar, India, belonging to the all caste communities. The nutritional status was assessed in terms of under
nutrition (weight-for-age below 3rd percentile), stunting (Height-for-age below 3rd percentile) and thinness (BMI-for-age
below 5th percentile). Diseases were accepted as such as diagnosed by pediatrician, skin specialist and medical officer.
Results: The prevalence of underweight, stunting and thinness were found to be 31%, 22.3% and 30.7% respectively. The
maximum prevalence of malnutrition was observed among early adolescents (23% - 54%) and the most common
morbidities were diarrhoea (16.7%), carbuncle / furuncle (16.7%) and scabies (12%).
Conclusion: Malnutrition among hospitalized under five children and around suffers moderately high rates of
malnutrition. Present nutrition programs attention on education for at risk children and referral to regional hospitals for
malnourished children. Screening tools to classify children at risk of developing malnutrition might be helpful.

Students in higher education are at a higher risk to miss participation in private or institutionorganized physical activities, and this can be reflected badly on their academic performance and future social and physical wellbeing. The current study aimed to identify the barriers hindering the sports participation among sports participants and non-participants in higher education in the UAE. The study demonstrated that both participants and non-participants are significantly affected by several barriers which are lack of facilities, frequent sickness, social and culture barriers, lack of interest, diseases and disabilities, lack of time, peer pressure, shortage of qualified trainers, and overload of study work and lack of transportation. This study provides important data to decision makers about the barriers that hinder sports participation and help them to find solutions in order to improve students’ involvement in physical education and sports in the higher education level in the UAE
Some people realized about the importance of physical activity in maintaining health and wellness. This perception exists because there is a lot of efforts and studies done to improve people health and wellness through physical activity. In top of that, it is known that motivation is one of the main effects of the people participation in sports or physical activity. Therefore, whether intrinsic or extrinsic, many have agreed that motivation plays important role in determining physical activity level. Hence, this study will be conducted to determine the relationship between extrinsic motivations with the physical activity level. The researcher has randomly selected 172 students from Faculty of Education UiTM as a respondent of this study. The study was conducted using questionnaire based on the Exercise Motivation Inventory (EMI) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) which then been edited to fulfil the requirement of the study. This study is to examine the relationship between extrinsic motivations with the physical activity level. The results showed that there was significant relationship between extrinsic motivations with the physical activity level. The male respondent was found to have high level of physical activity better than female respondents.

expensive sports. In all societies, it is people in high income,
high education, and high status occupational groups that have
the highest rates of active sports participation, attendance at
sports events, and even watching of sports on television[10]
.
Some studies have also found links between parental and
household characteristics and children’s physical activity level.
For example, results from the 2011-2014 CANPLAY study
indicate that individual and youth living in higher income
households or who participate in organized physical activity
and sport are more active compared to those living in lower
income households or those who do not participate in
organized activities [11]
.
In continuation of our previous research on the impact of
physical activity on the academic performance (Elmagd et al.,
2015) [12]
and self-esteem (Elmagd et al., 2015) [13]
of students
of Ras Al Khaimah Medical and Health University, the current
study was undertaken to assess the effect of socio-economic
status determined by parental education and occupation and
family income on the effective students’ participation in
physical activity sessions at RAK Medical& Health Sciences
University
Methods
A questionnaire-based study was conducted in RAK Medical
and Health Sciences University - Ras Alkhaimah – UAE from
the period of October 2014 to December 2014 after obtaining
the ethical approval from the University Research and Ethics
Committee. The study aimed to include participants from both
genders in the four constituent colleges; Medical, Dental,
Pharmacy and Nursing. The questionnaire was online based
including socio-demographic data about students’ age, gender,
ethnicity and residency. Four indicators were used to
characterize the socio-economic status: Father’s education,
Mother’s education, Family size and Family income, the
indicators were rated on a 5-point Likert scale except the
family income which was rated on a 4- point Likert scale as
follows, Parents’ education (1= Less than high school,
5=Postgraduate), family size (1= 0-2, 5= more than five), and
family income (1=25000$, 4=>75000$). The questionnaire
also included graded evaluation of the students’ physical
activities and academic performance during the academic year
(2013-2014). The sports participation claimed by the students
was crosschecked with the sports officer records. The
questionnaire was constructed with reference to similar
previous studies and according to the recommendation of
World Health Organization (WHO) [14]
. Finally, administrative
and academic faculty validated the questionnaire. The
incomplete entries were excluded then the data were collected
in a worksheet and analyzed statistically using the SPSS
software (IBM SPSS version 19).
Results
The total number of participants was 198 with 65 male
students (33%) and 133 females (67%). There was equal
number of Medical and Dental students (57 each) while
Pharmacy and Nursing students constituted 46 and 38
respectively. The students’ age ranged from below 18 years to
above 24 years with majority (56%) in the age range (18-20
years) followed by (35%) in the range (20-22 years old). The
students came from different nationalities as there were 49%
from the Middle East, 36% Asians, 12% Africans and 3.5%
Americans. The sports, which showed more participation,
were walking, jogging, running, and dancing. As shown in
Table 1, less than 40% of our students met the WHO
recommended duration of physical activity per week (150
minutes or more per week).
Table 1: The distribution of the physical activity categories of the
participants
Level of physical activity Frequency (%)
< 30 minutes per week 17 8.6
31- 59 minutes per week 47 23.7
60–89 minutes per week 57 28.8
90–150 minutes per week 37 18.7
> 150 minutes per week 40 20.2
Total 198 100.0
Higher physical activity levels were more predominantly
reported among male students (Fig 1). On the other hand, the
nationality of the participants did not affect the level of
physical activity, as there were no significant differences in
their means among the different nationalities.
Fig 1: Percentage of physical activity levels gender-wise
With reference to (Fig 2), it can be noticed clearly that most of
the MBBS students fall in the high physical activity levels
while most of BDS students fall in the low physical activity
levels.
Fig 2: Frequency of Physical activity levels college-wise
Based on the average duration of physical activity, the students
were categorized into low (<47), medium (<74) and high
physical activity (>74) groups. Collectively, 77 (39%) students
were in the low physical activity group, 57 (29%) in the
medium physical activity group, while 64 (32%) were in the

high physical activity group.
The majority of students surveyed had fathers and mothers
with university degree education (52.02% and 31.82%,
respectively). Over 90% (179/198) had parents with paid
employment. Only 13.64% of the students in this study were
from high income households (more than 75000$ annually)
whereas 42.42% of them reported average income households
(from 25000 to 50000$ annually). Moreover, 53.03% of the
students had relatively big families (more than 5 members).
(Fig 3&4)
Fig 3: students’ responses on SES indicators
Fig 4: students’ responses on family income
Further analysis revealed significant positive correlation
between physical activity levels of the students and SES
indicators, specifically, mother education (r=0.139, p=0.05)
and family income (r = 0.182, p= 0.01), while father education
had no significant effect on the level of students’ physical
activity (r =0.030, p=0.676). In addition, a significant negative
correlation was noted between the physical activity levels of
the students and number of family members
(r = -0.130, p= 0.068) (Table 2)
Table 2: Correlation between socio-economic indicators and
students’ physical activity levels

To further analyze the relationship between students’ SES and
their physical activity, we calculated the average of the Likert
scales of all SES indicators out of 100, which was then used to
categorize SES into low: < 51; Medium: 51-71, and high: >
71. The majority (114/198, 52%) of students were in the
medium SES while 52 (28%) and 32 (16%) were in the high
and low SES, respectively.
As illustrated in (Fig 4), the majority (20/32) of students with
low SES were less likely to participate in PA, also the majority
(44/114) of students with medium SES were of the low PA
group. Of note, 22/ 52 students with high SES were more
likely to participate actively in PA.

categories
Discussion
Socio-economic status is an individual’s or group’s position
within a hierarchical social structure. Socio-economic status
depends on a combination of variables, including occupation,
education, income, wealth and place of residence [15]
. Many
psychological factors like socio-economic status, attitudes,
motives, spectators, self-concept, motivation and adjustment,
influence the participation and performance of sportsmen in
games and sports [16, 17, 18]
.
The current study showed that the majority of our cohort
comes from families with parents holding university degree.
As demonstrated in previous studies higher levels of education
are associated with better economic and psychological
outcomes (i.e. more income, more control, and greater social
support and networking) [19]
.
Interestingly, the correlation with the level of students’
physical activity was significantly stronger for maternal
education than for paternal education in our study. Some
recent studies reported a positive association between physical
activity and high parental education [20, 21]
. On the other hand,
some other studies reported that the educational level of both
fathers and mothers had no significant influences on levels of
adolescent PA [22]
. In another study, participants whose fathers
did not have a high school degree reported shorter duration of
sports involvement than those whose fathers had achieved a
high school degree or above [23]
.
Consistent with previous studies, the present study revealed a
significant positive correlation between students’ physical
activity and family income, whereas a significant negative
correlation between students’ physical activity and number of
family members was noted. Sharma and Hardikar (2010)
reported that income reflects the level of living of a family [24]
.
Specifically, there is no doubt that type, amount and timing of
food can dramatically affect sport performance [25]
.
Moreover, one study showed that 51% of two-parent
households with children spent money on sports and athletic
equipment. Those who made such expenditures spent an
average of $579 during the year [26]
. In addition to these
equipment expenses, families may also spend money on
facility rentals, transportation to sports events, club
4.

International Journal of Physical Education, Sports and Health
memberships and competition entry fees in order to support
their children's participation in sports.
In light of such costs, it is not surprising that sports
participation was found to be most prevalent among
individuals from high-income households (highest adjusted
income quintile) at 68%, and lowest among individuals from
lower income households (lowest quintile), at 44% [27]
.
Family structure can also influence the sports participation of
individual, especially if there are two parents who can share
the responsibility of facilitating their individual's sports
participation[28]
.The highest individual's sport participation
rates (53%) occur in intact families where both birth parents
are present
Socio-economic status is typically broken into three categories
low (< 51), Medium (51-71) and high (> 71) to describe the
three areas a family or an individual may fall into. When
placing a family or individual into one of these categories, any
or all of the three variables (income, education, and family
members) can be assessed.
With respect to the relation between students’ physical activity
and their socio-economic status, our study demonstrated that
the majority of low SES students were of the low PA group.
Moreover, 42.3% of high SES students were of the high PA
group.
In accordance with our results, Wijtazes et al [29]
noted
associations between physical activity behaviors and SES.
Specifically, they found that individuals with low SES were
more likely to not participate in sports and to play outdoors for
a short duration (<1 hour/day). Moreover, the association
between SES and children’s participation in sports was noted
for all three indicators (parent’s education and employment
and household income). Also, Kelly et al. [30]
concluded that
low SES teens were less physically active than high socio-
economic teens.
Furthermore, some authors have shown that the team games
are strongly affected by the players’ socio-economic status
than the Individual games. While socioeconomic-status and
psychological factors enhance the performance of football
players to achieve their goal[31]
, socio-economic status did not
have any effect on the performance of badminton players [32]
Interestingly, players of high socioeconomic status did not like
to play Ice-Hockey, Golf and Tennis games [33]
.
Conclusion
The study demonstrated the effect of socio-economic status of
a cohort of medical and health sciences students from Ras Al
Khaimah on their physical activity. There was a significant
positive correlation between physical activity levels of the
students and mother education and family income. Conversely,
a significant negative correlation was noted between the
physical activity levels of the students and number of family
members. In addition, students with low socio-economic status
were more likely to display low physical activity whereas
students with high socio-economic status were more likely to
display high physical activity.

The Authors would like to express their gratitude to Vice
Chancellor RAKMHSU, Deans, Faculty/Staff and all the
