Culture shock is experienced by students who study abroad in a new country with an unfamiliar culture. Researchers have found there are several stages of culture shock as students adjust to changes in weather, food, language, and behavior in their new environment. Initially, students feel excited about the new culture but later may experience anxiety, depression, and homesickness once the novelty wears off and they face communication problems, financial stress, or discrimination. Eventually, students become more realistic and see both opportunities and challenges in both their home and host cultures.
