In reading this poem the first time, I had no clue as to what Cummings was speaking of. However,
after many times through and several on–line readings, I believe that I have some semblance as to
what Cummings was trying to convey in this poem. In reading this poem through on my own the
first time, I saw Anyone as any person. However, Anyone is actually an individual, as is Noone.
Anyone is seen to be a happy person as in line 4, he is seen singing and dancing. However, in
contrast to him, were the women and men who not only didn't care for Anyone but also are living a

I feel that this is just a little insignificant man in the eyes of the townspeople. The woman is not too
much in their eyes either. However, they have found each other and in finding each other, they have
found true love. They do not feel the need to go through the ceremony of marriage to show their
love for one another. You can see that they were in each other's lives for a long time because in line
10 we see that the children who noticed their love are now adults. These children, as adults, marry
but not for love and we also see some of the die in line 20, "they slept their dream". I see in lines
25–30 that their love was so deep that when Anyone died it was not shortly after that Noone also
passed away.
It is a very sad life that I see for the other members in this community. Some of the children have
that innocence to see things very clearly. However, when they grow up, they lose it. Cummings even
states that "only the snow can begin to explain how children are apt to forget to remember". I take
this line to mean that children are so innocent and fun–loving when there is snow falling. Children
do not really have too many inhibitions as of yet, but when there is snow on the ground, they lose
the inhibitions that they had. Yet, as we age, we lose that innocence and fun, care– free nature that

One might not think a renowned poet would speak of making a mark in a toilet in his attempt to
make his mark on the world, but e.e. cummings was no ordinary poet. e.e. cummings was a famous
poet of the 20th century; is unique style in his poems helped him become the second most
commonly known and read poet in the United States during his lifetime ("E.E. Cummings"). Being
raised in a well–educated, literary family; Cummings had a strong background to develop in his
chosen career. He wrote, on average, a poem everyday from the time he was 8 years old until he was

Apparently even some of his sermons contained puns and metaphors (Goodman), this may have
influenced Cummings to try the use of those literary devices in his own poems. His mother, one of
his biggest supporters, had a huge role in his literary upbringing, she sang and read to him as a child
and encouraged him to keep a diary throughout his childhood (Goodman). Not only was his
immediate family full of writers, many of his extended family members were interested in literature,
as well. In fact, his aunt, Susana Rowson, was the author of the first American novel, Charlotte
Temple, published in 1791 (Goodman). Cummings was a smart child, and at age 9 he was already
taking 7th grade classes at Agassiz Public School (Goodman). There he remembers memorizing
many poems (Goodman). He went on to study both Latin and Greek at Cambridge Latin High
School ("E. E. Cummings"). Eventually he went to Harvard to receive both his Bachelor's and

he had an affair with Elaine Thayer, who happened to be the wife of a close friend of his. Later that

In the poem, "she being Brand/ –new" by E.E. Cummings, the writer has chosen to use symbols and
unique capitalization in parts of the poem to reference a sexual interaction with a woman. The
opening sentence using a capital B in "she being Brand/ –new" (lines 1–2) leads the reader into the
idea that the woman he is with is a virgin and untouched. He never speaks of his actual sexual
experience, but gives readers an almost humorous ride of his sexual encounter. In lines 10–15, up,
slipped the clutch (and then somehow got into reverse she kicked what the hell) next minute I was
back in neutral tried and again slow–ly; bare, l nudg. Ing readers will see the comparison of car parts
not working correctly and having to tinker with them to get them going with that of maybe a new
sexual experience not going right. The readers will see that the driver of the car would be considered
a little self–centered and proud of his sexual abilities by the word choices of Cummings. In 1920's

In the way he conveys this, it's clear that he feels time is moving very slowly. In the third stanza,
"We do not wind it up, it has no weights, spring wheels inside of its slender self, no indeed dear
nothing of the kind" (Cummings Web), Cummings creates vivid imagery. This shows that
Cummings is relating how he has no use for a clock and doesn't care for the principle of keeping
time. He would rather live life time free, without having to worry about being on time or being late.
The third and final poetic device that shows up in the poem, "9", is symbolism. To begin the poem
Cummings uses symbolism. The number "9" refers to the number of times he uses the words, "tic–
toc", "toc–tic", "tic–tic", "toc", and "tic". Also, as seen in the fourth stanza, "So when kiss spring
comes, we'll kiss each kiss other on kiss the kiss lips because the tic clocks toc don't make a toc–tic
difference to kiss kiss you and to kiss me" (Cummings Web). Cummings uses the word "kiss" to
complicate and clutter the verse. If you remove those words, he simply summarizes all of his
thoughts in the last stanza. He says when spring comes; we can kiss because the clocks don't make a
difference to you and me. This symbolizes that Cummings can't wait for the spring and summer
months when the clocks don't play a role in his life.

evident satirical tone that Cummings' often uses when the subject matter of his poem is something
that disgusts him. Cummings' writes,
Humanity i love you/ because you would rather black the boots of/ success than enquire whose soul

analyzing poems I have begun to look at punctuation to tell me something about the author and look
more deeply into the poem and it’s meaning. The uncapatilized "i" gives a
detached feeling when you look at the line closely. It seems as though he could be detached because
of the death that surrounds this poem, has if does not want to involve himself as much in it. The
"i" could also represent the importance of something, probably love which one of the
underlying themes of the poem. The children are still alive until line twenty–five. As in lines
twenty–two and twenty–three they are thought to be just playing, not being an important part, but

feels lonely it's probably because they are not around friends or family, and just want to be able to
have conversation. It also could mean someone wants to stray themselves away from the crowd

Key Assessment Education 2130 Throughout my observation hours that I completed at South
Forsyth Middle School, I learned many things that I can apply to my classroom when I become a
teacher. I was cultured inside of the classroom to many new techniques and teaching styles that will
be beneficial for my career that is to come. I experienced the classroom in a wide variety due to the
different environments I witnessed during my time observing. Taking my experiences from the
broad array of students, I now feel more prepared for what lies ahead in my teaching career.
My time at South Forsyth Middle School gave me experience with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The
students ranged from on–level art students to advanced year–long students. I came across a trend of
endless opportunities within the classroom for the students. If the students came across a technique
or type of artwork that they wanted to try, the school and Ms. Wood made that happen. She had high

However, after many times through and several on–line readings, I believe that I have some semblance as to what Cummings was trying to convey in this poem. In reading this poem through on my own the first time, I saw Anyone as any person. However, Anyone is actually an individual, as is Noone. However, they have found each other and in finding each other, they have found true love. They do not feel the need to go through the ceremony of marriage to show their love for one another.
