E.E. Cummings was an experimental American poet who defied traditional poetic forms through his unique typographical styles and syntax. His poem "r–p–o–p–h–e–s–s–a–g–r" confuses readers through its strange use of spacing, punctuation, and wording. While difficult to understand at first, examining his innovative techniques reveals Cummings' creation of a new expressive writing style.
This English 102 assignment prompted us to identify a poet's influences and determine if the poet had an impact. The presumption was an impact upon literature. Amazingly enough, I never looked at Cummings in any depth prior to this paper. In fact, I don't even recall ever reading any of his poems prior to researching this paper.
I had some trouble with this paper early on. The prompt mentioned that we should not give a "report" on the poet. To me that meant we should not give much attention to the poet's biography. Well, the paper I was writing gave way too much detail to Cummings' time in France, Russia, his childhood, and his affair with Elaine Orr. Setting the paper aside for a week then looking at the prompt again, I discovered my "feeling" was 100% accurate. The end result of the rewrite is what you see here.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

You would not ever think of using your two main senses such as sight and sound in writing, correct? Well E.E Cummings has defied the odds of basic
and traditional poetry. E.E Cummings takes advantage of these various techniques to create a completely new meaning to poetry – but how does he do
this? For example, when I read one of his poems for the first time, I perceived it as different and peculiar, but as I began to look more into his poetry, it
displayed his techniques to construct a unique and expressive writing style. In 'Document B, "r–p–o–p–h–e–s–s–a–g–r", you can already determine by
the title that this poem is going to be unusual. As I read the poem, it contained a strange use of wording, spacing, and punctuation. As my classmates

Despite Cummings' affinity for avant–garde styles, much of his work is traditional. Many of his poems are sonnets, and he occasionally made use of
the blues form and acrostics. Cummings' poetry often deals with themes of love and nature, as well as the relationship of the individual to the masses
and to the world. His poems are also often rife with satire.
While his poetic forms, and even themes, show a close continuity with the romantic tradition, his work universally shows a particular idiosyncrasy of
syntax, or way of arranging individual words into larger phrases and sentences. Many of his most striking poems do not involve any typographical or
punctuational innovations at all, but purely syntactic ones.
As well as being...show more content...
In addition, a number of Cummings' poems feature, in part or in whole, intentional misspellings; several feature phonetic spellings intended to represent
particular dialects. Cummings also made use of inventive formations of compound words, as in "in Just–", which features words such as
"mud–luscious" and "puddle–wonderful".
Many of Cummings' poems address social issues and satirize society (see "why must itself up every of a park", above), but have an equal or even
stronger bias toward romanticism: time and again his poems celebrate love, sex and the season of rebirth (see "anyone lived in a pretty how town" in its
entirety).
His talent extended to children's books, novels, and painting. A notable example of his versatility is an introduction he wrote for a collection of the
comic strip Krazy Kat.
Examples of Cummings' unorthodox typographical style can be seen in his poems "the sky was candy luminous..." and "a leaf falls

Edward Estlin Cummings was an unbelievable great American poet–one of the most well–versed scholar in the subject of poetry. E. E. Cummings was
excessively popular, especially among younger readers of his work. He was known for being reckless in thought when it came to his poetry, it was
also said that he "experimented radically" with his form of spelling, syntax, punctuation, and miss spelling. More than half of his poems turn to the
subjects of sex, love, and war, with such facile language leaving behind the traditions that most poets followed. E. E. Cummings was born on October
14, 1894 to Edward Cummings and Rebecca Haswell Clarke, who were Unitarian. His father was a professor at Harvard University and was later the
nationally known minister of Old South Church in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother loved to spend time with Cummings and his sister Elizabeth.
His mother and father knew about the creative gifts Edward had with poetry, from an early age he would write a poem daily from the ages of eight
through twenty two. With writing a poem everyday Edward learned many different self–taught form of ways to write poems. At the age of twenty one

Throughout time, American authors writing style have changed; one of the most drastic changes of style being between the traditional and modern
time periods. Authors of the modern period rejected the writing styles of the authors before them by straying from the typical structure, this included
proper punctuation and complete sentences. E.E. Cummings is an example of a Modern American author that ignored the rules of poetry. His works,
centered mostly around nature and love, each have a unique, fractured, structure. One of his most famous works being "in Just," follows no rules set in
places by the traditional writers that came before him. Typical of a work of modern literature, E.E. Cummings's "in Just" is a reflection of the fractured
structure typified by the period.

I've gained a new sense of courage within myself. For my version of the poem, I wanted the reader to understand and reflect on their own lives by

Modern American poetry could be described on scale of maturity where most poets can fit easily, ranging from childlike simplicity to adultlike
restraint. Most poets except for E.E. Cummings and Robert Frost, two of the most well known American poets that show either maturity or simplicity
on the surface, but the stark opposite when analyzed closely. E.E. Cummings would fit the more childlike approach in his fantastical imagery, but his
poems hold hidden themes that elude the children who read his poems. For Robert Frost, his poems sound soothing and simple when analyzed, but are
very refined on the surface, which appeal to the reader's rational sense. In the poems "Once by the Pacific" by Robert Frost and "When Serpents

Cummings shared goals in their poems when speaking about humanity. They believed human rationalism made humans believe they were above nature
and animals because they did not have the sophisticated systems that we have. In the final lines of E.E. Cummings' poem, the words incredible and
unanimal stick out because they are emphasized with an air of harsh sarcasm, created by the ridiculous way that nature emulates human action; March
denounces April, the oak asks before making an acorn, and valleys are jealous of the mountains (Cummings 10–12) . All of these things are absurd and
only aid in making the final two lines argue harder that human beings are not incredible. This is where Robert Frost brings readers to reality, where
nature is angered by man's audacity to think that they are better than the beauty and perfection of nature. It seems that the beautiful way that nature is
described, with clouds like hair and eager waters, nature wants to wash the world clean and show humans that rationality is not better than nature. In
the five final lines, there is anger that is coming and it will last for ages at the command of God (Frost 10–14). Both E.E. Cummings and Robert Frost
look for ways to show humanity that nature is more powerful, more beautiful, and more incredible than they

Edward Estlin Cummings is a famous poet and novelist. A true man of the arts, he also enjoyed playwrights, painting, and drawing. His lifetime lasting
from 1894–1962 was vivaciously lived! He spent a large portion of his life in his birth state, Massachusetts, although certain life events lead him
beyond the United States. Cummings served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and was a volunteer in an ambulance unit as well. A great portion
of his life was also dedicated to his Harvard education and multiple romantic relationships. Despite these things that took up most of his time,
Cummings managed to find time for his passion, writing. E.E. Cummings' unique style of writing is attributed to his free spirit, which amounted to all of

Once his name received a wonderful reputation he was easily able to expand beyond novels to his true desire, poetry, and become more successful
as a poet. Cummings' impressive education consists of a Bachelor's and Master's degree from Harvard, in which he graduated near the top of his
class. He submitted many of his poems to the newspaper at Harvard, which sparked his interest towards a career as a poet. When his first poem was
published, the publisher left all the letters of E.E. Cummings' name lowercase. Cummings soon adopted this as his own personal trademark. The
style of Cummings' writing was what made his poems so distinctive. No matter what the topic, he always incorporated a lyrical flow to the poem.
Cummings "experimented with typography, slang, dialect, jazz rhymes, and jagged lines" (Anderson et al). By exploring the possibilities of poetry,
Cummings was able to create poems that have a beat that corresponds with the tone, mood, and theme of the poem. Aside from Cummings' busy life
activities he was able to fit in an extremely demanding love life. He moved from France back to America to pursue an affair with Elaine Thayer.
Elaine was the wife of Cummings' good friend and mentor, Scofield Thayer; however, she became Cummings' first wife. Their marriage was short lived
as she ended up leaving Cummings for yet another man to marry. Anne Barton was Cummings' second wife, but
