Educational Philosophy
My educational philosophy has evolved throughout and because of my different
experiences in education. I first thought I wanted to be a music teacher. I have always been
involved in music, and the discipline and work ethic I took away from my lessons and
performances have been invaluable in my life. I wanted to take untapped talent and mold it into
something powerful and wonderful. I was about 6 months from finishing my graduate degree
when I realized that teaching music wasn’t really my passion. Teaching is the passion. My
favorite and most influential moments when teaching music did not happen when rehearsing a
song or teaching sight-reading, but rather when I could talk to and get to know my students. But,
it What happened in their lives greatly influenced what happened in my classroom, and I saw
the opportunity to be more than “just another teacher” to my students.
After many talks with my graduate school mentor about these realizations, she
encouraged me to search my heart for what I thought was missing from some of my teachers
growing up. I kept coming back to my middle school math teachers; they were each very
knowledgeable in the content area and did a fine job teaching concepts, but I could not
remember a single thing about them. I did not want to be a teacher like that - content to simply
show up to work, do what was expected of me, and then go home. I had always been good at
math in school, so I decided to take a few extra education courses and try my hand at teaching
middle school math. I fell in love. Again, not with the subject of math itself, but with the teaching .
All of this detail leads me to what I believe at my very core about education. Every single
child deserves an education in a setting where he/she feels respected and valued. Middle
school students are not just pre-teens and young teenagers; they are complicated, wonderful
people who bring varying strengths and weaknesses to the classroom. It is the educator’s job to
observe, draw out, and encourage these strengths while addressing that weaknesses are a part
of this journey we call life. When we truly know our students, we can then challenge and
support them as they learn how to be a citizen of the world. Math, music, history, art - every
single subject is full of opportunities for students to grow and develop their world knowledge.
When we surrender to the teaching of the whole child, we see that school is so much more than
core-content and elective classes; it is a revolution of developing minds. I am unendingly proud
to be a part of the revolution.
