In the end of this chapter, the students

•Identify the internet, the World Wide Web
and all its other components.
4. Introduction
Chapter 10 deals with the
internet and the World Wide
Web. This chapter will discuss
the components of internet
such as the protocol, internet
access providers, connecting
to the internet and concepts
related to World Wide Web.

•Networks may be a LAN or a WAN.
•Local Area Network (LAN) is a network that
covers only a limited geographical area. It
consists of a server and several computers.
•Wide Area Network (WAN) is a network that
covers a large geographical area. I consists of a
several LANs.

•The worldwide connections of the networks are
called the internet or simply net.
•The internet started in the late 1960’s from the
U.S. Department of Defence’s Advanced Research
Projects Agency (ARPA).
•The purpose of building the network is to
communicate and share information.

How does the internet work?
•The computer sends data to the different computers
and networks through a packet which is a data that
been broken into small piece of data.
•The packet travels in the network, it arrive at the
destination through router.
•A router is hardware devices that allows you to
connect several computers and other devices to the
single Internet connection.

•Many router are wireless, which allows you to
create a Wi-Fi network.
•Packet switching is the technique for breaking the
data into packets, sending it through the best
path using the router and reassembling the data
when it arrives at its destination.
•A network should follow a protocol or standard
called the TCP/IP or Transmission Control
protocol.

•World Wide Web is one of the services of the
Internet, the World Wide Web(WWW) or “web”
is a collection of webpages found in the
network of computers.
•It is a system of hyperlinked or hypertext
documents accessed via the internet.
•WWW came into existence in early 1990.

•Webpage is consists of text, graphics, sound,
videos and even animations. A collection of
webpages is called a website. Most websites have
a homepage which is the first page of a website.
•A webmaster or a web developer is the person
responsible for developing webpages and
maintaining them.

•Webpage can either be a
static webpage or a dynamic
webpage. A static webpage is
a fixed webpage with same
content. A dynamic webpage
displays different contents
from the same source code
whenever visited.

•Each webpage has a designated unique address
called the URL or the Uniform resource Locator.
It consists of four components are protocol,
domain name, folder and filename.
