The ball whipped through the air, echoing through the gym like the snap from a leather whip.
Lauren, our libero,had served. I glanced at the flashing scoreboard and winced at the score: 21–23.
The other team had received the ball and were ready to set their outside hitter. Their hitter made a
lightning fast approach and the ball spun through the air over to our side, aimed right at me.
This was my first volleyball camp at Michigan Tech University this summer and I was ready.
Coaches sorted us into teams, taught us some intermediate skills revolving around the technique of
the game, and scrimmaging from time to time. My team leader was Ali Gerring, a recent graduate
from Kingsford. We did bump–set–spike drills and six different rotations to get ready for our big
scrimmage the next day. You could see the sweat glistening on our faces, and smell the hard
determination to improve. You could hear players call for the ball at every court yelling, "Mine,
mine mine!"
At every practice there were different stations specializing in hitting (spiking), digging (bumping),
and setting. We peppered with partners at some stations and practiced serving at others. Our
forearms were turning scarlet from digging so many balls and our necks started to ache after craning

Gaol Learning Experience
My three and a half months of working at the Huron County and Huron Historic Gaol have flown
by. Time has gone far too quickly and I cannot believe that my time here has come to a close. I am
so grateful for the opportunity I was given to work at the museum and gaol this summer. It has been
a learning experience that I will never forget. I began working at the museum and gaol in May. The
first month centred on familiarizing myself with the two buildings and gaining and understanding as
to how they function. I spent time learning about the history of both sites. I took place in an
orientation for about the first two weeks of work. The orientation was led by museum curator,
Patricia Hamilton. I was guided through the Huron County Museum, Huron Historic gaol and Sky

In 2013, motorcycle helmet use in Michigan dropped to a record low approaching 73%, falling from
98% compliance just years earlier ("smarter–usa.org"). This drop can be attributed to the 2012 bill
passed by Governor Rick Snyder, which declares certain qualified motorcyclists exempt from the
previous mandatory compliance law ("smarter–usa.org"). The repercussions of this bill including
effects on long term state supported medical care, organ donation, and increased insurance
premiums pose a major public health issue (Satkoske, 2013). While motorcyclists claim their right
to individual freedom of choice, the opposition expresses the concern that riding without a helmet is

controversial optional helmet law, assessing arguments in favor of and against the bill. The need for

My Papa's Waltz, written by Theodore Roethke, is a poem about a child and his father. Theodore's
poems are greatly influenced by his father's life and his childhood experiences with him. His father
died of cancer and his uncle committed suicide when he was only thirteen. Theodore was born in
Saginaw, Michigan, where most of his poems take place in his father's greenhouse. He attended the
University of Michigan, Harvard, and taught at other universities. Later he started his poetry
residency at University of Washington in 1948. He won several prizes for many of his poems and

Diversity in our country has been the center of attention for much of America's young life. Some

Case Summary: Grutter v. Bollinger, 539 U.S. 306 (2003) involved a white Michigan resident
named Barbara Grutter and the University of Michigan Law School. Grutter was frustrated by her
rejection from the Law School, claiming that the University's decision was due to a discriminatory
admission policy which sought to enroll greater amounts of underrepresented minority students.
Grutter believed that white candidates possessed a disadvantage due to this policy and she sued the
university. According to Grutter, race was the "predominate factor" in selecting applicants instead of
academics. She argued that the policy was unconstitutional and that it violated her 14th Amendment
rights.
In response to the allegations, the University of Michigan asserted that their policy was designed to

The state of Michigan is a fascinating area. From its mitten–like shape, to its historical background,
to the presence of the Great Lakes, Michigan has a story unlike any others. One very important part
of Michigan's story is how water has shaped the land making up the state. Seeing as the Great Lakes
surround Michigan, it is obvious that the hydrologic system plays a great role in the water supply
and the ecosystem of the Great Lakes. The hydrologic cycle includes evaporation, condensation,
precipitation, groundwater, transpiration and runoff, all of which keep the Great Lakes functioning

The visual argumentation that I ended up creating was revising the information from my discourse
community of a marching band paper and turning it into an infographic. It consists of six
components of a marching band that are named and briefly explained, as well as an image of an
instrument found in the marching band that correlates to that component. My visual argumentation
shows the revision of my discourse paper, has stayed fairly similar to what my design plan has
dictated, and followed the principles given through the CRAP design principles.
Through the revision process of my design, I decided to only use some of Swale's components of a
discourse community. My design details the components of a marching band that are apparent while
the band is performing because I felt that there were some discourse community components that
aren't as valuable for the audience to know to understand how a band works. I also chose this
because the performance is the most important part of a marching band, so the components
understood should be the ones that are shown in a performance. This is also why I choose to include
the connection a marching band has with its audience as a component even though it isn't one of

In the poem "The Secretary Chant," the poet, Marge Piercy, uses figurative language to develop the
argument of how society has produced a stereotype that women should be secretaries, because being

conflicts. The way Piercy uses comprehensive imagery about the speaker's body and figurative
language to depict a woman's perspective of being a secretary interested me. Aftering reading the

Love for The Game
Born in Toledo, Ohio, one of the most energetic and smartest coaches to ever step onto a sideline,
this man is Jim Harbaugh. Son of Jack Harbaugh who spent a majority of Johns childhood coaching
at the University of Michigan before moving out to California for a different job. Growing up
around the team Jim had the opportunity to get close with the coach, a man named Bo
Schembechler. Already having a relationship it really was no surprise when Bo started recruiting one
of the top high school arms in the country in Jim's final year of high school to come and play
quarterback for the University of Michigan. Of course Jim accepted the scholarship offer and packed
his bags to move back to Michigan. Jim ended up having quite the college career there too! Learning
from one of the best coaches to ever coach anything he finished his college career in the top five in
passing yards, passing attempts, completion percentage, completions, and touchdown passes in
school history. He was the starting quarterback for the last three years of his college stay, even
though he broke his arm five games into his sophomore year and was out for the remainder of the
season. As a junior, he came back better than ever leading the nation in passing efficiency as
quarterback of one of Michigan's best teams ever under coach Bo, who took Jim under his wing

The use of social media in the United States has dramatically expanded over the recent years thanks
to many technological advances from a multitude of intelligent men and women. While you may or
may not be utilizing this technological boom, millions of Americans across the country have turned
to social media as an imperative aspect of their lives for communication in relationships. As positive
as it may sound in terms of affecting relationships, there are many people that argue that social
media causes nothing but distress in an relationship. Alternatively, some argue against this statement

Well, over three fourths of the responses agreed that in order to talk to other people they must use
social media because in essence that's what the majority of our generation depends on when we want
to get into contact with one another. Therefore, how can you stop using something you use to form
relationships? Nonetheless then only a little above one fourth of people stated they believe social
media enhances their relationships. The numbers are everywhere, with little to no consistency; if a
student thinks they use their phone too much, you expect them to just stop using their social media
as much, but then they aren't communicating with their friends like they enjoy. On the other hand, if
they are communicating with their friends like they want to and using their phones "too much"
wouldn't you expect the percentage to be higher when asked if social media enhanced their
relationships? The numbers don't add up to any answer. Results proclaim at one point that social
media has negative effects and then the next question it proclaims it has positive effects. The
