The industrial revolution a shift from traditional labor-intensive
agricultural based economy to an economy based on
manufacture by machines, specialized labor, and industry; it
began in Great Britain around 1750. The Industrial Revolution
dramatically impacted the way that people lived and worked,
which is why it is called revolutionary. More specifically, this
time period affected people economically and socially. The
three major impacts of the Industrial Revolution in Great
Britain involved the harmful living conditions that resulted
from population growth, strenuous working conditions, and
technological changes which improved industries during the
Industrial Revolution.
The first major impact of the Industrial Revolution was the
massive population growth. The Great Hunger in Ireland caused
the population to double in 60 years. Emigration caused the
rural population to move to cities, which caused rapid
urbanization. Living conditions also changed. With this city
growth, population and people searching for jobs expanded. As
a result, living conditions were overcrowded, lacked sanitation,
open sewers would drain into the streets, dirty water was
3. present, soot and smoke from the factories covered the cities,
and crime was prevalent. Even after these problems, population
still grew. More marriages and babies born caused the
population to continues to increase .The people wanted to move
to the bigger cites where more food and job opportunity were
there( Wilde,(n.d.).
The working class also suffered, both from harmful living and
working condition. Artisans worked to distinguish themselves
from factory workers. Poor working conditions involved long
hours, no minimum wage, no job security, cramped spaces,
child labor, and no government intervention. Trade Unions also
formed, which fought for workers of a particular trade such as
blacksmiths. Government action was taken, and laws were
passed to prevent certain labor abuses. This included reduced
hours for women and children. Labor changed because workers
were paid for hours, not the product they produced. This
presented a problem because workers worked very hard, but
could be replaced easy and had no job security.
There also are many industries that experienced several
technological changes in this period of time including the cotton
industry, the iron industry, and transportation. Historians
emphasize the “great inventions and the cataclysmic nature of
the [technological] changes” (Spielvogel, (2015). In regards to
the improvement of the cotton industry, the spinning jenny
quickened the production of yarn, and the power loom was able
to more efficiently manufacture textiles. The steam engine sped
up the production of cotton and led to an increase in the need
for coal. As far as the iron industry is concerned, wrought iron
was a high quality iron produced by using new methods of
smelting iron. More efficient forms of transportation became
required in Great Britain because new industries needed to ship
goods and raw materials. Changes in transportation, including
new roads built, new canals, and railroad construction, were
able to fix this lack of efficiency. As a result of these
technological changes, new machinery was able to reduce the
use of child and female labor in factories (Cameron,1985).
4. To conclude, The Industrial Revolution changed the way
that people lived and worked in Great Britain. Lives were
changed socially and economically. Rapid population growth,
working conditions, and technology changed drastically and
revolutionized society as a result of the Industrial Revolution in
Great Britain.
