Editing Evaluation

A2 MEDIA STUDIES

As a consequence of being ill in the post-production
stage of my coursework I did not have the time to
advance my editing skills by expanding my knowledge
onto the constructions of another program which was
initially planned to be Adobe Premiere Pro.
Nevertheless, by utilizing Pinnacle Studio 15 which I
had already become familiar with, I could broaden my
capacity on editing a bit further by learning how to
implement the ending credits with the basic concepts
of the program.

Draft 1
Primarily for the first draft of
my footage, my editing was
oriented at starting to assemble
the basic format of shots I would
like to use for my short film.
In order to solidify specific
points in the shot I slightly
cropped each shot so that I
could set the foundation for
editing my second draft of
footage.
By placing the shots in a
consecutive order with
pinpointing certain elements of
the storyline, further editing
would be consequently done of
a more efficient manner due to
the coherently established
structure.

In regards to the secondary element of editing the first draft of
footage my focus was placed upon the title of my short film.When
observing the relation of the appearance of the title to my film I
wanted to create a latent link between the two in order to
emphasize the message of the film from the beginning. This can
potentially be seen by the monitor-like resemblance (of an air traffic
controller monitor) with the artificially bright title resembling a
digital format.The darkly outlined title makes the title stand even
more.

Draft 2
As a part of the second stage of editing my footage, I
firstly focused on finalizing the layout of shots so that I
could then work on polishing the film as a whole.
In regards to the past two shots I largely focused on polishing it visually
and audibly. In regards to the visual aspect of both of the shots I had to
perfect the shot-reverse shot technique by matching the eye line due to
the fact that the same actor was playing both characters. In terms of
audio I had to polish and coincide both the voiceover, and later in the third
draft of editing the soundtrack , correspondingly.

The following step in regards to
the editing process of my footage
consisted of positioning
transitions appropriately in order
to emphasize certain aspects of
the storyline.
With the aid of the transitions of fade
out and long dissolves I could
conjure the atmosphere of
disillusionment of the main
character as the air traffic
controller this can be seen by the
enhancement of the somber
stature of the main character and
the reverie-like images of the
passengers.
An example of this can be seen by the elongated
apparition-like effect created by long dissolves on the
close up shot of the feet of the passengers walking.
Transitions of dissolve & fade out:

The succeeding segment of
editing the second draft of my
footage revolved around sound
editing of segments including
sound of diegetic and non-
diegetic nature. In regards to the
non-diegetic examples used,
Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata
(Sonata al chiaro di luna) and a
piano cover of Feel It Still by
Portugal.The Man
emcompassed the soundtrack to
my short film. However, in order
to make the short film as
realistic as possible, despite its
surreaslitc nature, I had to
implement the diegetic sounds
of the film and correspond it
accordingly to the music in the
background. In order to achieve
this I had to maneuvre with the
pitch of the sound multiple
times so that I could set an
adequate base for further fine
tuning in the third draft of
editing
-
However, music was not the form of non-
diegetic sound used in my film. In
collaboration with a sound studio I utilized
a new report voiceover announcement in
order to establish the core premise of the
storyline and consequently make the
plotline more realistic.
With sound editing assistance I was
introduced to sound editing in Sound Forge
where the focus was on recording the voice
over and the raw editing of sound such as
cutting off silence, increasing the volume
and noise reduction.
I was also introduced to the program Vegas
Pro where final editing took place which
included: music underlay, sound effects,
adjusting music volume against voice over
and finally mastering.
Despite not needing to edit the segment in
terms of trimming in Pinnacle Studio 15, I
had to work with adjusting the volume due
to the fact that it was done in a music studio
as opposed to the other forms of diegetic
and non-diegetic sound in my film.

Draft 3
As a part of the final draft of editing my film I focused on special
effects with shots of the main character such as the speed of certain
shots emphasize the dragging of the main characters feet and
consequently reflect the overall somber-like atmosphere. Due to the
dull and dismal impression of the character this editing technique
aided to enhance his instable mental state.
However, I did not
want to overdo the
effect and therefore
decided to set
moderate speeds for
certain shots like this
one where the speed
was 70/100.

In regards to specific points in the process of editing, I
particularly struggled with shots concerning the line up
and matching corresponding shots in an accordingly
manner.
A specific example would be to create a coherent link
between shots 19 and 20 which due to the fast movement
of passengers and different positions of the camera (point
of view & back shot) was a challenging task to overcome.
-
For the final part of editing the
third draft of footage I focused
on the ending credits which I
created via basic concepts of text
and the transition of Push Up in
order to construct an appropriate
image of ending credits. In order
to create a better demonstration
of the ending credits I
corresponded the titles with the
soundtrack rhythmically.
Another aspect I focused on is
the company logo video at the
beginning of the film which I
previously constructed in Adobe
After Effects program.

With the aid of the transitions of fade out and long dissolves I could conjure the atmosphere of disillusionment of the main character as the air traffic controller this can be seen by the enhancement of the somber stature of the main character and the reverie-like images of the passengers. An example of this can be seen by the elongated apparition-like effect created by long dissolves on the close up shot of the feet of the passengers walking. Transitions of dissolve & fade out:
  • 7. - The succeeding segment of editing the second draft of my footage revolved around sound editing of segments including sound of diegetic and non- diegetic nature. In regards to the non-diegetic examples used, Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata (Sonata al chiaro di luna) and a piano cover of Feel It Still by Portugal.The Man emcompassed the soundtrack to my short film. However, in order to make the short film as realistic as possible, despite its surreaslitc nature, I had to implement the diegetic sounds of the film and correspond it accordingly to the music in the background. In order to achieve this I had to maneuvre with the pitch of the sound multiple times so that I could set an adequate base for further fine tuning in the third draft of editing
  • 8. - However, music was not the form of non- diegetic sound used in my film. In collaboration with a sound studio I utilized a new report voiceover announcement in order to establish the core premise of the storyline and consequently make the plotline more realistic. With sound editing assistance I was introduced to sound editing in Sound Forge where the focus was on recording the voice over and the raw editing of sound such as cutting off silence, increasing the volume and noise reduction. I was also introduced to the program Vegas Pro where final editing took place which included: music underlay, sound effects, adjusting music volume against voice over and finally mastering. Despite not needing to edit the segment in terms of trimming in Pinnacle Studio 15, I had to work with adjusting the volume due to the fact that it was done in a music studio as opposed to the other forms of diegetic and non-diegetic sound in my film.
  • 9. - Draft 3 As a part of the final draft of editing my film I focused on special effects with shots of the main character such as the speed of certain shots emphasize the dragging of the main characters feet and consequently reflect the overall somber-like atmosphere. Due to the dull and dismal impression of the character this editing technique aided to enhance his instable mental state. However, I did not want to overdo the effect and therefore decided to set moderate speeds for certain shots like this one where the speed was 70/100.
  • 10. - In regards to specific points in the process of editing, I particularly struggled with shots concerning the line up and matching corresponding shots in an accordingly manner. A specific example would be to create a coherent link between shots 19 and 20 which due to the fast movement of passengers and different positions of the camera (point of view & back shot) was a challenging task to overcome.
  • 11. - For the final part of editing the third draft of footage I focused on the ending credits which I created via basic concepts of text and the transition of Push Up in order to construct an appropriate image of ending credits. In order to create a better demonstration of the ending credits I corresponded the titles with the soundtrack rhythmically. Another aspect I focused on is the company logo video at the beginning of the film which I previously constructed in Adobe After Effects program.
