Why Peripheral competencies are important for Business Analysts?Shashank Jain
Like, they say Business analysis is like a two-sided coin. Despite the fact that BA have mastered activities like - tools and techniques and domain knowledge which makes the BA efficient.
However, there is another side of coin where BA need to be effective as well.
There is a key aspect of business analysis that everyone should be aware of, the peripheral competencies. Peripheral Competencies are the skills, knowledge, and characteristics of a BA that help support their activities.

Editor's Notes
Significant experience in requirements capture across a range of projects; small to large using industry-standard techniques like workshops, interviews, requirements catalogues, traceability matrices and MOSCOW prioritisation
Management of requirements throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring traceability throughout and providing support to resolve issues through development, test and acceptance testing phases. Take ownership and accountability for ensuring requirements are delivered to quality, budget and time
Act as an effective bridge between the business and technology to manage expectations, resolve issues and communicate effectively
Significant experience in managing complex requirements and developing proposals for competitive response situations (ITT, RFI, RFP)
Developed requirements methodology framework for Business Cases and Bids
Working between architecture team to position technical solution and with business to help position functional and commercial proposal
Experience in developing cost/benefit models including technical estimations, and operational delivery cost
Experience in responding to competitive tender situations as a bidder and in the procurement and vendor selection process for supplied services
Have worked with a wide diversity of stakeholder groups, managing conflicting requirements across many countries and cultures
These are the 3 key strands which I would highlight as being dominant traits when delivering are:
Versatile: recognise that things change on projects – whether its external elements beyond our control or other environmental constraints – my approach is to adapt to the situation and work with and through others to identify alternative solutions, communicate openly and regularly to manage expectations while doing so
Influencer: adapt my approach to deal with different personalities – meaning I can develop rapport and build strong relationships quickly
Team-oriented: work well with others; believe that people can achieve more by working together on a set of shared goals and ambitions. Always seek to improve quality and encourage individuals to contribute their different parts to a shared vision
