The Easter Island heads are large stone statues carved by the Polynesian people of Easter Island between 1313 and 1513. There are approximately 800 moai statues on the island, which are giant human heads made of volcanic rock. The statues were created for unknown reasons, though some believe they were built to protect the island. Easter Island is located in the southeast Pacific Ocean and is now part of Chile.
