The Great Wall of China was built over 2,000 years ago during the Qin dynasty to protect China from invaders from the north. Stretching thousands of miles across northern China, the wall ranges from 15 to 30 feet wide and 25 feet tall, winding through grasslands, deserts, mountains, and plateaus. Originally constructed during the 3rd century BC under the Qin dynasty, the wall was built by both forced labor like prisoners as well as military conscripts, and many lives were lost during its construction. Today, much of the original wall is no longer intact, but parts can still be visited by the public.
