 Greece is a small
country located to
the southern Europe.
Athens is the
nation's capital and
largest city, followed
by Thessaloniki.
 Greece has a large
amount of islands
approximately 6000,
of which 227 are
inhabited.
 Milos
 Syros
 Hydra
 Mykonos
 Santorini
 Zante
 Rhodes
 Amorgos
 Milos is a volcanic Greek island in
the Aegean sea.
 The island is famous for the statue
of Aphrodite. The statue of
Aphrodite was transferred to the
Louvre Museum in Paris, where it is
located today. During the violent
transport, the two hands of the
statue were lost. In the
archaeological museum of Milos,
there is an "authentic copy" of the
statue, made in the workshops of
the Louvre Museum.
 The intense post-volcanic
hydrothermal action in Melos is due
to the existence of many hot
springs, with valuable ingredients
for treating many diseases. The
thermal baths of the island have
been known since the ancient
times.
 Syros is the largest island in
the Cyclades with an area of
84 square kilometers and
Ermoupolis the capital.
 Ano Syros is the second town
of Syros and was built by
the Venetians at the beginning
of the 13th century on the hill
of San Giorgio, north-west
of Ermoupolis. Innumerable
steps between narrow streets
and houses with coloured
doors lead to the top of the
town. The medieval settlement
of Ano Syros is accessible by
car the town is served mostly
by marble steps.
 The Catholic cathedral of Saint
George dominates Ano Syros.
The cathedral church was
constructed during the 13th
century.
 Hydra is an island of
Argosaronic. The town of
Hydra island, which is
the centre of the whole
island, is built
amphitheatrically around
the port. Right and left
from the entrance of the
port, there are the
Parapets with the
Canons, which protected
the town.
 The beautiful roads and
alleys, paved with slabs
and the houses, adorned
with flowers, give to the
island of Hydra a touch
of magic and a romantic
mood.
 Mykonos is the most
famous island, part
of the Cyclades.
 Little Venice
is picturesque
quarter with its
brightly colored
balconies seems to
hover over the sea .
It's an excellent spot
for enjoying one of
the most beautiful
sunsets in Greece.
 Santorini island is what
remains after an enormous
volcanic eruption that
destroyed the earliest
settlements on a formerly
island, and created the
current geological caldera.
 Today Santorini is a popular
tourist destination during
the summer.
 Zante is an island in the Ionian
Sea.
 Zante’s most famous beach is
Navagio Beach, an exposed cove,
sometimes referred to as
"Smugglers Cove". On 2 October
1980, a freightliner, ran aground
in the waters around Zakynthos
Island on Navagio Beach during
stormy weather and bad visibility.
It has been rumored the ship was
smuggling contraband such as
cigarettes and wine. The ship was
abandoned and still rests buried in
the limestone gravel of the beach
that now bears the nickname
Shipwreck.
 In Zante you can also see the
loggerhead sea turtle ( caretta-
caretta) which is endanger species.
 Rhodes is the largest of
the Dodecanese islands
of Greece.
 Rhodes' nickname is The island
of the Knights, named after
the Knights of Saint John of
Jerusalem, who once conquered
the land.
 Historically, Rhodes was famous
worldwide for the Colossus of
Rhodes, one of the Seven
Wonders of the Ancient World.
 The Medieval Old Town of the
City of Rhodes has been
declared a World Heritage Site.
Today, it is one of the most
popular tourist destinations in
Europe
 Amorgos is surrounded
by crystal clear blue and
turquoise waters the sea
that gave the name to
the movie “The big blue”.
 The monastery
of Panagia
Hozoviotissa is situated
on the cliff side, 300
metres above the sea. It
is the second oldest in
Greece built in 1017.
One hundred monks
lived here in the 18th
century; now there are
only three
 Eighty percent of
Greece consists of
mountains or hills,
making the country
one of the most
mountainous in
Europe.
 Mount Olympus, the
mythical abode of
the Greek Gods,
culminates at Mytikas
peak 2,918
metres, the highest
in the country.
 Western Greece contains a number
of lakes and wetlands and is
dominated by the Pindus mountain
range.
 Pindus is characterised by its high,
steep peaks, often dissected by
numerous canyons and a variety of
other karstic landscapes. The
spectacular Vikos Gorge, part of
the Vikos-Aoos National Park in
the Pindus range, is listed by the
Guinness book of World Records
as the deepest gorge in the
world. Another notable formation
are the Meteora rock pillars, atop
which have been built medieval
Greek Orthodox monasteries.
Greece has a plenty of archaeological sites. The best of
them are…
a. The acropolis of Athens
b. Delphi
c. Ancient Olympia
d. The Minoan Palace of Knossos
e. Ancient Epidaurus
f. The Island of Delos

 The Acropolis of Athens is
the main and most famous
archaeological site in Greece.
 The Parthenon Temple is the
main building on the
Acropolis.
 The Acropolis and its
buildings were constructed in
the 5th century
 The most famous buildings
of the Acropolis are the
Parthenon, the Erechtheion,
the Temple of Athena Nike
and the Propylea.
 The site of Delphi was discovered
in 1893 by the French School of
Archaeology. This was the most
important oracle of ancient
Greece.
 The development of the oracle
started in the beginning of the
8th century B.C with the
establishment of the cult of
Apollo. The sanctuary continued
to work autonomously and
enlarge its influence on religious
and political orders. The
sanctuary was enlarged and
decorated with beautiful
buildings, statues and other kind
of offerings. People from all over
the Mediterranean would come to
the oracle of Delphi to ask for
advice from the priestess Pythia.
 Ancient Olympia is in Peloponnese.
 it was dedicated to the father of all
gods, Zeus.
 Olympia was also the place were the
ancient Olympic Games were first held n
the 7th century B.C. The Games were
organised to honour Zeus and,
according to the myth, they were
founded by Hercules. These were the
most important sports competitions in
the ancient times. The winners were
awarded a branch of olive oil tree and
they were welcomed as heroes in their
homelands.
 The most important monuments of the
site are: the temples of Zeus and Hera,
the Stadium, the workshop of sculptor
Phedias, the Palaestra and the
Gymnasium. Next to the site, there is an
impressive museum with findings from
the area.
 The Minoan Palace of Knossos was
discovered in 1878 by
archaeologist Minos Kalokairinos.
 Knossos, located near Heraklion in
Crete island, was the seat of the
legendary King Minos and it is also
a place connected to many legends
such as the Labyrinth with the
Minotaur and the story of Daedalus
and Icarus.
 At about 2,000 BC, the Minoans
were characterised by a flourishing
commercial, political, social and
cultural system, as well as by the
construction of impressive palaces,
such as Knossos, Zakros, Phaestos
and many others.
 Located at Peloponnese, Epidaurus
developed as a religious center and
more particularly as a sanctuary of
Asclepius, the healing god.
 according to the myth, Epidaurus was
the birth place of god Asclepius and
this is why an important healing center
was established there, famous all over
the Mediterranean Sea. It was believed
that the treatment was coming directly
from the god. The patients would sleep
in a large room and at the night the god
would come to their dream and indicate
the necessary therapy.
 In order to honor god, large festivities
would take place in the Ancient Theatre
of Epidaurus as well as athletic
competitions in the Stadium. The
ancient theatre that survives today was
constructed in the 4th century BC. It is,
made of marble and stone and famous
for its amazing acoustics. In summer,
performances of ancient Greek drama
are presented there as part of the Greek
Festival.
 Delos, included in the World Heritage
Monuments protected by the UNESCO,
is a small island a few miles from the
famous island of Mykonos, in the centre
of the Cyclades.
 According to the Greek mythology,
Delos was the birth place of Apollo, the
god of light and maybe of Artemis, the
twin-sister of Apollo, goddess of
hunting. It worked both as a religious
and trade centre.
 The most important monuments of the
site are: the Agora, the Temple of
Apollo, the Terrace of the Lions and the
ancient theatre, which is being
renovated currently to host theatre
performances. On Delos, there is a
small museum with findings from the
island. To go to Delos, you take the tour
boat from Mykonos. The island is not
inhabited but it is an open
archaeological place.
