Easter is the most important holiday in Ukraine, with preparation beginning seven weeks beforehand during Lent when believers give up meat and animal products. On Palm Sunday, people bring home willow branches that were blessed in church, and the week is dedicated to readying for Easter. Ukrainians bathe before dawn on Clean Thursday and clean their houses according to tradition, while women bake paska bread on Good Friday. Easter traditions also include dyeing pysanka eggs, blessing baskets with eggs, bread and meat in church overnight on Easter Sunday, and celebrating with songs and food.
