Easter, called Velykden or Paska, is the most important holiday in the Ukrainian church calendar, celebrating Christ's resurrection. Ukrainians fast for 40 days before Easter without meat, milk or dairy. The week before is called Great Week, during which people work hard preparing traditional Easter breads like paska and babka and dyeing eggs in designs or single colors called pysanka and krashanka respectively, which are gifts or eaten as part of the celebration of The Great Day.
