Preamble of the first constitution of EADI (1975): “ In practically all countries of Europe, there are many institutions for development research or training. But there is no adequate framework within which closer collaboration can be effected among them, and between them and the similar institutes in Africa, Asia and Latin America: The European Association should fill this gap."
EADI‘s mission statement EADI is the prime professional association for development   studies in Europe. As such it promotes:  Quality in research and education in development studies,  The exchange of relevant information among members and with others,  The strengthening of relevant knowledge networks at the regional and global level,  Influencing both national and European decision makers in the field of development co-operation.

4. Quality & standard setting Promoting quality standards within European  development research: Task force accreditation & journal ranking Developing  quality management and accreditation guidelines for development studies Setting European journal ranking
5. Brokering partnerships & research co-operation Promoting and establishing partnerships & networks between EADI member institutes: Shared concern and consensus for more co-operation in research (EADI directors‘ meetings) Task force European research and policy Developing code-sharing model (star alliance) for co-operation in research EDC2020: European development co-operation to 2020 (FP7 funded since April 2008)
6. Southern co-operation and global networking Key member of ICCDA ( Inter-regional Coordinating Committee of Development Associations ), ISSC and ACUNS   In negotiations with GDN (Global Development Network) concerning partnership and closer co-operation In talks with Worldbank about joint activities  Accredited by Council of Europe as INGO Partnership with Society for International Development Member of Europe‘s Forum on International Co-operation (EUFORIC)
7. Funding & career services Supporting development research community by sharing information on funding and job opportunities:  Database of funding organizations  Funding announcements  Careers‘ website ( www.devcareers.org ) for development professionals with open vacancies in Europe Jobs and funding e-mail alerts
