The rapidly growing number of sensors, Integrated circuits (IC), and miniaturized electronics wirelessly connected to the Internet and local networks is referred to as the “Internet of things”. Which introduces opportunities for new categories of devices that not only communicate with humans but with each other and other machines to automate operations without human intervention.
Industry consulting firm Gartner predicts that this trend will produce nearly $2 Trillion dollars of economic value in the next few years , as smart devices get embedded into everything you encounter around you.
The challenges to electronics companies are many, but the fundamental increase in quantity and complexity of these new devices will put a strain on current design processes to meet the needs of the marketplace. More than ever, time-to-market, which has already been the key driver for the electronics industry will be challenged by competition to innovate these new devices and be first to market in new categories of products.
Complexity ranges across all design disciplines of Mechanical, Electronics and Software, and all have the potential to be on the critical path in the New Product Development and Introduction process. Designers may need to work with partner organizations collaboratively, and utilize new materials to meet regulatory, or miniaturization requirements, where every amount of space will need to be utilized within the device to pack more technology in smaller spaces.
Speaker notes:
Most of these devices, particularly in the Consumer electronics space, will face constant cost pressure to meet margins while providing a product that the market is willing to buy at the right price.
New technology will often drive new design constraints, the need for modular design to reuse components and intellectual property, leveraging previous design effort, in addition to supporting resources needed to create all-new designs , all of which need to perform flawlessly in the field or market share opportunities will disappear in favor of close following competition.

NX is a digital product development system that helps companies like yours get the right product to market faster.
NX can help you:
- create more innovative product designs
- Reduce engineering time and get a better product to market faster
- Reduce rework costs, along with fewer physical prototypes and
- Provide overall cost reduction by re-using more of your existing data and designs.
This presentation will look at how and why NX is a great solution for the Electronic Products marketplace.
You need to be able to create and evaluate innovative new products quickly. In fact, the best concept design solution is one that allows you to develop concept designs without really thinking about the design tool you are using. You need to be able to design as fast as you can imagine.
With NX you can:
Develop concepts from sketches, polygons, freeform dynamic sculpting tools or just ‘play’ with shapes. You can quickly create organic geometry from curves, surfaces and solids, lofts, meshes, sweeps and other freeform design techniques.
Additionally, advanced visualization capabilities help you understand the true impact of product shape decisions and create better designs in less time.
NX Realize Shape is based upon what is called subdivision modelling. Subdivision modelling allows for ‘on the fly’ subdivision of polygonal elements into further polygons, providing much more control and refinement.
This allows for rapid conceptualization of ideas without the need for expert knowledge. Users will discover that it is intuitive and easy to use.
Users start off with a primitive shape and morph the shape as needed. There are several shapes users can start with, such as blocks or spheres, and the cage faces can be subdivided as much as desired to give greater control. It’s easy to create smooth transitions in Realize Shape, and there are many options for shape creation and refining shapes, such as symmetric modeling, splitting, and bridging faces. The end product – and this is a critical point - is high-quality B-surfaces in an editable NX feature.
NX delivers true design flexibility mixing solid modeling and surface modeling into a single environment allowing the designer the power and flexibility he needs to get his job done.
In addition to this, NX offers the power of parametric modeling along with the freedom of direct modeling (we call this Synchronous Technology) in a single environment, once again delivering a solution that does not force a designer to compromise on the design.
At Siemens PLM Software we have spent a considerable amount of time working with our customers to analyse the way they want to work.
This enables us to develop features that speed the creation of complex geometry and simplify complex design tasks so even novice users can come to meaningful results quickly.
In addition to the creation of these features design changes can be made quickly and previewed instantly, allowing fast convergence on the desired shape without compromising design intent.
Industrial design and styling are the first steps in a process…. the process of Digital Product Development. With NX, the Industrial Design & Styling process is integrated with other downstream processes.
In fact, NX provides a complete unified and integrated suite of applications for CAD, CAE, CAM and tooling.
The seamless flow of information from Industrial Design through Mechanical Design proved by NX reduces engineering time
The ability to avoid data translations or re-creating due to non-integrated industrial design and mechanical design solutions help to:
Remove traditional disconnect between styling and product development
Maintain design intent
Shorten overall digital product development time
Notice the quote from Formation, an NX user<sight pause>
With the industry's broadest suite of integrated, fully associative CAD/CAM/CAE applications, NX touches the full range of development processes in product design, manufacturing and simulation.
NX’s integrated solution runs the gamut from Concept design and styling, detailed design, simulation, drafting and documentation and CAM.
The NX integrated solution includes other capabilities important to you - capabilities like sheet metal design, electrical wiring and mechanical routing.
Again, the ability for design data to flow seamlessly from stage to stage of the process results in customers getting product to market faster.
Integrating Concept, Design, Analysis and Manufacturing across the global enterprise results in increased productivity. The earlier a product is available in the marketplace, the more profitable it will be.
Because electrical, electronics, and mechanical components are typically developed by separate teams using different design tools and methodologies, companies developing products often face critical problems with integrating and coordinating product development -- and keeping different versions of components in “synch” and maintaining interfaces is costly.
Note from the quote on the screen…(slight pause) … Sunbeam’s decision to standardize on NX technology from early conceptual and industrial design, through detail design and to prototype manufacture, gives the company a significant competitive advantage, in terms of its speed to market and ability to implement change quickly
NX helps achieve reduced rework costs and allows you to create fewer physical prototypes. NX offers scalable solutions to validate & analyze designs for fitness of purpose
NX offers a flexible and productive approach – integrating analysis and simulation into the design process. The earlier you can do simulation it helps you avoid wasted design cycles on “problem” products.
The keys to maximizing the value of simulation applications are to use them both as early as possible and then throughout the development process. To this end, Siemens PLM Software offers a comprehensive suite of simulation solutions designed to meet the needs of multiple users within any engineering enterprise.
Effective use of simulation can help project managers reduce many downstream costs and risks.
NX supports a broad range of analysis capabilities often used in the High Tech and Electronics environment, such as
Stress
Drop Test
Vibration
Durability
Electronic systems cooling
Solar heating and
Flow
Simulation data and results can also be linked to High Definition 3D (HD3D) requirements and reports.
Our suite of HD3D tools… merges your product geometry with key PLM information and requirements, enabling you to visually comprehend PLM data with interactive navigation, and to drill down to details as needed .
Linking CAE results to requirements increases understanding of analysis feedback.
From within the 3D design session, tags show requirements validation failures and can link to additional information on test procedures. This gives engineers the ability to find and fix problems fast. The earlier problems are found, the less expensive they typically are.
Independent surveys show that over 80% of a CAD designer's time is spent editing and creating geometry. If you could even recoup half of that time, imagine how much more productive your designers could be—with the same or fewer resources.
NX’s ability to help you re-use more data results in significant cost reductions and improved productivity.
With ready-to-use standard parts libraries and a 3D graphical search engine to rapidly track down parts similar to a given example, NX helps you leverage information from past projects.
NX users can take advantage of integration with Teamcenter’s classification capabilities from within NX. These users can navigate in real time through a class hierarchy, view class attributes and issue queries to search for class members based on ranges of class attribute values. This includes ready-to-use standard parts libraries consisting of more than 100,000 standard parts - including screws, washers, nuts, bearings, pins and other design items
NX also has a re-use library where parts and templates can be stored for other designers to use at any time. These parts in the parts library can even have simulation data already attached – providing for better design decisions as early as possible in the process.
Additionally, Geolus Search is a 3D search engine which will rapidly track down parts similar to a given example based on its geometry. A clear view of all the data gives you the ability to control and re-use parts which provides savings in design time, cost estimating, procurement, manufacturing, and inventory.
For Templates, simplicity is the obvious key to successful creation, successful adoption and successful longer-term usage. The user experience, both in terms of authoring and consumption, must be effortless.
At the same time, templates must be underpinned by a very robust framework that allows them to comprehend and communicate with all of the relevant disciplines necessary to the design.
Product Template Studio (PTS) uses a simple drag-and-drop environment to help overcome some of the traditional problems faced when reusing knowledge and data.
PTS provides rapid generation of reusable design templates and allows any design to be adapted for re-use. With PTS, engineers can publish the key design variables for a component or assembly, and these become the key driving parameters that control the product.
PTS brings codeless customisation to the designer, enabling “design for re-use” strategies to be easily implemented and delivering a solution that extends the benefits of parametric modelling in an enterprise. These templates can then be stored and accessed from the Reuse Library – directly from within NX.
PTS users report 80+% gains in productivity and 90+% reduction in template authoring time
Traditional modeling approaches give designers the power to parametrically modify the construction recipe of a model. They can build in model logic for anticipated changes or pre-plan the relationships between elements to allow for easy modification. The problem comes when change isn’t anticipated. Complicated history or feature trees can be very difficult to manipulate by someone other than the author. Anyone who’s worked with a complex CAD model’s history knows how much knowledge is required to modify the logic or parametrics for the proper design outcome.
Additionally, re-using parts from earlier software versions can be difficult with some systems because it is hard to know how the part was designed; and data originally created on other CAD systems doesn’t have any parametric information or feature history to control how it can be modified.
With NX’s synchronous technology capabilities there is no need to plan ahead for re-use. NX allows you to easily work on both NX and non-native data due to predictable results with synchronized rules, features, and geometry.
Electronics companies must respond to market changes quickly, so time to design and release a new product must be short, but the quality and design will make it a success when it reaches the marketplace.
NX is a digital product development system that helps companies like yours get the right product to market faster, with high quality, low cost and innovative design.
