The World Economic Forum identifies approximately 30 innovative companies each year as Technology Pioneers in three categories: biotechnology and health, energy and environmental technologies, and information technologies and new media. These companies are normally start-ups or early-stage companies involved in designing new technologies. Over 80% of companies selected since 2000 are still active. This year's information technology pioneers include companies that provide tools for event organizers, insert relevant mobile ads, enable collaboration, deliver mobile video, embed brands in video, enable mobile payments, allow social gaming, provide cloud-based phone systems, process continuous data streams, enable social networking and microblogging, and facilitate crowd-sourcing during crises.
