- With IEM we are focusing on the To Order type industries The To Order type industry is a complex environment which is further illustrated by the various Industry Modes and Business Models. In today’s competitive environment optimizing production is not enough all company resources have to work together to provide optimal results. In a demand driven production approach the response to a confirmed customer order is a project. Manufacturing Manufacturing is the core process. By manufacturing unique products, backed often by years of experience, businesses can achieve competitive differentiation and meet key challenges. For example, manufacturing high capital products is based in large part on a solid margin on margin. This can be established by creating a learning organization, which in turn optimizes the Quote/Bid process. When a business solution supports building quotes from already processed jobs, margin control increases, leading to more efficient, precise orders. Lifecycle Industrial equipment manufacturers need to understand the behavior of their products in the field. Since a service network often is multi-level (using dealer networks or agents), it is important to record the vital information of the product that is delivered and installed. The installed product also closes the product lifecycle loop by representing the As Installed or As Maintained product view. Spare parts and consumables needed to keep the equipment performing is often part of a industrial equipment manufacturer’s business model—effective management of the installed base can often bring in a significant amount of revenue. Project Using a project-based manufacturing business model enables industrial equipment manufacturers to efficiently monitor and manage end-to-end processes. This is the only model that can be lean in an engineer-to-order process. A project can combine design engineering, configured products, project management, and costing control. The project model is often referred to as the Project based Manufacturing business model. When producing identifiable units based on orders (Build To Order – BTO) a project is the method of choice to manage and monitor the progress of the orders. The main advantages of the project based manufacturing approach in environments of high product variety is the ability to supply the customer with the exact product specification required, the reduction of costly sales discounts and finished good inventory, as well as a reduction in stock obsolescence risk. The main disadvantage of Build To Order (BTO) is that manufacturers are susceptible to market demand fluctuations leading to reduced capacity utilization in manufacturing. Hence, to ensure an effective use of production resources, a BTO approach should be coupled with proactive demand management. Finding the correct and appropriate balance of BTO/BTS to maintain stock levels appropriate to both the market requirement and operational stability is the main challenge.
