The Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602 when the States General of the Dutch Republic granted a charter allowing for the creation of a single united Dutch East India Company. This unified several existing trading companies and gave the new company a monopoly on Dutch trade east of the Cape of Good Hope for 21 years. The company established factories and trading posts in India, Indonesia, and Ceylon/Sri Lanka, allowing it to dominate Asian trade and displace Portuguese commercial power in the region. It consolidated Dutch political and commercial control over its territories through military conquests and territorial acquisitions over the following decades.

The Complete Guide to the History of Indian Subcontinent during the 16th - 18...NIILM University
The Complete Guide to the History of Indian Subcontinent during the 16th - 18th Century.
In the 16th century, the Mughals came to India and ruled for over 300 years. They were Muslim rulers who imposed their religion on the Indian people. The Mughals also brought Persian language and culture to India. The Mughal empire was one of the most powerful empires in India’s history.
In 1707, a new dynasty known as the Marathas took control of much of the subcontinent. They were Hindu rulers and they ruled until 1818 when they lost control to British rule.
The British East India Company was granted permission by Queen Elizabeth I to trade with India in 1600s. The company established trading posts across much of India and eventually took control over large parts of it too by force or through treaties with Indian rulers.
This paper deals with the history of the Dutch trade relations with Kerala. It was pepper that brought the Dutch East India Company to the coast of Kerala in the 17th century. The Dutch tried to establish monopoly of pepper trade in Kerala through political conquests. They had trade relations with many native kingdoms of the period. The Dutch had many settlements in Kerala like Kollam, Cochin, Kodungallur and Kannur. The rise of Travancore under Marthanda Varma shattered the hopes of the Dutch ambitions of trade in Kerala.
