 Decision support system.
 A specific class of computerized
information system that supports
business and organizational
decision-making activities .
 A properly designed DSS is an
interactive software-based system.

 Because decision-making involves a complex sequence of activities
over time, it implies there are at least three functions that should be
assigned to DSSs:
1. The capability of capturing and saving information from previous
activities.
2. Data processing capability.
3. Data retrieval capability.
28-02-2016 4
 Three fundamental components of DSS
1. DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DBMS)
2. MODEL BASED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (MBMS)
3. DIALOG GENERATION &MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DGMS)
28-02-2016 5
28-02-2016 6
 DS systems can be separated into seven broad categories, each aiding
decision making by different methods:
1. DATA DRIVEN DSS.
2. MODEL-DRIVEN DSS.
3. KNOWLEDGE DRIVEN DSS.
4. DOCUMENT DRIVEN DSS.
5. Communication Driven DSS.
6. INTER & INTRA-ORGANIZATIONAL DSS.
7. NEW BREED OF DSS
28-02-2016 7
1. Facilitation
2. Interaction
3. Repeated Use
4. Identifiable
5. Task-oriented
6. Decision Impact
7. Supports individual and group decision making
8. Easy to Develop and Deploy
28-02-2016 8
1. Increase the effectiveness of the manager's decision-making process.
2. Supports the manager in the decision-making process but does not
replace it.
3. Improve the directors effectiveness of decision making.
28-02-2016 9
1. Time savings
2. Enhance effectiveness
3. Improve interpersonal communication
4. Competitive advantage
28-02-2016 10
1. Monetary cost.
2. Transfer of power.
3. Obscuring responsibility.
4. Status reduction.
5. Information overload.
28-02-2016 11
1. Medical diagnosis.
2. Business and Management.
3. Agricultural production.
4. Forest management.
28-02-2016 12
 DSS can be extremely beneficial to any organization’s overall
performance.
 However, DSS can also be the cause of great confusion, misperception
and even inaccurate analysis – these systems are not designed to
eliminate “bad” decisions.
 DSS are there to facilitate a manager in making operational decisions.
