• His service is that he is a residential custom
builder, who puts the customers priorities
first.
• David founded DSF Construction 10 years ago.

3. • David went to college for Architecture and
Construction Technology, from 1985-1987.
• He started the business because, “He had a
desire and passion for building and to become
independent and self-employed.”
• His training and background is his college
education.
• He still has the desire and passion as they
continue to grow in the down economy. While
striving to become, “Master builders.”

4. Successes
• Hiring skilled employees and sub-contractors who add to the
efficiency and quality of the company and their products.
• Becoming more efficient at building practices and knowledge of
material.
• Financial discipline and great credit for the following reason:
- paying all debtors on time each month to
obtain a 2% discount.
- tracking each job and costs to compare quoted pricing.
- financial plan for capital investments such as large equipment
or tools using the companies profits without incurring debt.
- established business line of credit for investment
opportunities. The result is self sustained work during the
gaps between jobs.

5. Challenges
• Finding job opportunities and closing on them.
• Knowing customers and delivering on their
expectations.
• Scheduling work load and staffing.
• Coordinating sub-contractors.
• Materials costs and availability.
• Weather.

6. • Scheduling seems to be the biggest challenge.
• This is because they bid for numerous jobs and when
they acquire those jobs they need to manage the
workload in the most efficient manner.
• He overcomes the challenges through “Daily
attention.”
• He focuses on reputation, quality of work and a
professional manner as his factors of success.
• The biggest flaw of this industry is poor workmanship,
bad reputations, along with a substandard business
standing; as well as mishandling of money in which you
fall into debt and are unable to rescue your business.

7. • He plans to stay in business for the near and
distant future.
• David plans to look for larger projects in the
custom home building.
• The goal for the company is to continue to
grow its investment property area, which will
ultimately secure his wealth and retirement.

8. • His advice to our class is “You have to have a
passion for what you are doing, and the mentality
that you will not fail. Whether you’re a risk taker
or conservative individual the ones who succeed
are the ones that are willing to stop at nothing to
achieve their goal.”
• I learned that with a college degree, a passion
and a good idea anything is possible with a little
hard work.

9. • David and I discussed the typical work day?
• His typical work day starts at about 7am when
they meet at his shop. Often times they part ways
there, sending his employees to a job site and he
would continue with paper work or meetings on
potential jobs. When those concluded around
10am he would meet up with the guys and work
the rest of the day with them on site. They would
work until about 5pm on average and it was all
based on sub-contractors and the amount of
work completed during the day.
