Leading projects is one of the most challenging—and rewarding—roles engineering managers will take on. Beyond the technical challenges to confront, there is the added difficulty of managing diverse teams with limited resources. Optimal President, Carla Fair-Wright has teamed up with 2013 Society Of Women Engineers President (Houston) Jill Almaguer to describe the challenges faced in engineering projects and also suggests the best ways to overcome them to ensure success.

What is Business Readiness and Adoption?
• Would you talk to someone who isn’t paying attention?
• Would you make a movie if you didn’t know who would watch it?
• So why do projects often deliver to a Business that isn’t ready to receive or adopt!
Business Readiness and Adoption is a measure of preparation. A business that is ready will have made all the preparations necessary to accept the deliverables of a project and begin operating them. So, in effect, anything that involves a change to ways of working requires measurement to see if a business is ready for go-live.
Project deliverables will be a combination of the following (not an exhaustive list):
• New products.
• New services.
• New organisation structures.
• New processes.
• New systems.
• New infrastructure.
In projects to measure Business Readiness/Adoption I have previously used (but not restricted to) the following measurement areas:
1. Leadership.
2. Business Area Readiness.
3. Implementation Planning.
4. Stakeholder Management & Communication.
5. Process & Procedures Readiness.
6. Business Benefits.
7. Data.
8. Departmental Roles & Responsibilities (impact on individuals).
9. Education & Training.
10. Business Reporting.
11. Testing.

Agile software development is a group of software development methods in which requirements and solutions evolve through collaboration between self-organizing, cross-functional teams. It promotes adaptive planning, evolutionary development, early delivery, continuous improvement, and encourages rapid and flexible response to change.
The Agile development model is also a type of Incremental model. Software is developed in incremental, rapid cycles. This results in small incremental releases with each release building on previous functionality. Each release is thoroughly tested to ensure software quality is maintained. It is used for time critical applications.
Mr. Zelikovitz will discuss the improtance of developing and implementing a culture and processes that enable an organization to align its projects with the strategic objectives of the organization through an effective Benefits Realization Management process. With a focus on PMI's 2016 Thought Leadership Series - Creating lasting value: Benefits Realization Management, Mr. Zelikovitz will highlight a number of key issues including, but not limited to:
Strengthening benefits awareness within the C-suite and with project management practitioners;
Who is responsible for identifying, managing and sustaining project benefits - establishing benefits ownership and accountability;
How do you measure benefits (tangible and intangible), and how should they be prioritized.

Automated Decision making with Predictive Applications – Big Data HamburgLars Trieloff
Most businesses are making most decisions the way Lizards do: based on very simple reflex-response patterns and let cognitive biases taint their decision making. Instead of letting gut feel and biases take over, predictive applications make decisions fast, cheap and fact-based.

It seems like everybody is implementing Lean these days. Is simulation just one more tool to be dusted off for only the really big, complex, messy projects? Or is there a better way to integrate with Lean that makes the most of both of these tool-sets? Acquisition of an enterprise EHS MIS solution should ideally involve two key elements:
1. A solid business case
2. A systematic process for selecting an EHS MIS platform
EHS MIS funding requests generally fail when business cases are either non-strategic, too flimsy or lack the ability to capture a platform’s ability to aid in cost avoidance versus cost reduction. In essence, decision-makers who hold the purse strings must be presented with “compelling reasons” for sign-off on a platform
purchase.
Once funding has been approved, a methodical selection process ensures your company chooses the right solution to meet the needs of your organization.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.
We describe the deployment and use of Globus Compute for remote computation. This content is aimed at researchers who wish to compute on remote resources using a unified programming interface, as well as system administrators who will deploy and operate Globus Compute services on their research computing infrastructure.

A study of 5,400 large scale IT projects (projects with initial budgets greater than $15M) finds that the well known problems with IT Project Management are persisting. Among the key findings quoted from the report:
17 percent of large IT projects go so badly that they can threaten the very existence of the company
On average, large IT projects run 45 percent over budget and 7 percent over time, while delivering 56 percent less value than predicted

IBM survey in the success / failure rates of “change” projects finds;
Only 40% of projects met schedule, budget and quality goals
Best organizations are 10 times more successful than worst organizations
Biggest barriers to success listed as people factors: Changing mindsets and attitudes – 58%. Corporate culture – 49%. Lack of senior management support – 32%.
Underestimation of complexity listed as a factor in 35% of projects

Source : KPMG (New Zealand)Type of survey : Survey of 100 businesses across a broad cross section of industriesDate : Dec 2010
KPMG survey of Project Management practices in New Zealand finds some truly startling results;
Survey shows an incredible 70% of organizations have suffered at least one project failure in the prior 12 months!
50% of respondents also indicated that their project failed to consistently achieve what they set out to achieve!
Reference article - Most Business Experience Project Failure
Source material – KPMG Project Management Survey 2010
Even if we say that the 39% successful project doers don’t need us, and the 18% failures were doomed from the start…that still leaves 43% who are “challenged”. If just that is the market…it’s a huge market.
http://versionone.com/assets/img/files/ChaosManifesto2013.pdf
Let’s not dwell on the negative (failure). Let’s focus on the positive…becoming more competitive.
Dramatic Opportunity:
Those organizations that HAVE developed mature project management offices have become more significantly more consistently reliable. Giving their organizations the ability to out-compete their rivals.
http://www.pmsolutions.com/audio/State_of_the_PMO_2012_Research_Report.pdf
Then there is the huge cost savings potential from doing things right the first time because enough time was taken to do it right…or to cancel the project that isn’t possible at this time or worth it knowing the challenges.
