Subsea cables are the global backbone of the Internet, connecting people, businesses, and economies around the world. They connect us to the cloud, deliver streaming video, and increase efficiency and productivity for business. Subsea cables’ importance is all the more apparent during the Covid19 pandemic when many of us have switched to working from home, remote learning, and online gaming and entertainment.
We studied the economic impacts from subsea cables that arrived in Nigeria (e.g., WACS) to understand how they changed the economy. Improved connectivity led to increases in internet usage and decreases in costs, but infrastructure and affordability challenges meant that impacts were limited to select urban areas. Our results signal the promise connectivity improvements could have in other parts of the country.

Given the size and import of the public sector across Africa's economies, it is clear that market-driven transformation however desirable, will be constrained by public sector alienated from and distrustful of technology. As a consequence, our countries fail to leverage the exponential value of a wholesale embrace of technology as an enabler, multiplier and accelerator of national development.
ICT has a pivotal role in the national aspiration of becoming a High Income Nation by 2020. From the strategic role as an enabler, ICT has become a key economic sector of the country. As such, it is imperative to position ICT as an industry with a sustainable national innovation ecosystem. The advent of ICT has conceived the Internet of Things (IoT), the next evolution of the Internet.
The Review of National Strategic ICT Roadmap 2008 and Technology Roadmaps identified six technology focus areas; specifically Cloud Computing, Wireless Intelligence, Big Data and Analytics, Security, E-Services and Ubiquitous Connectivity. Accordingly, IoT technology being the convergence of the six technology focus areas will galvanize the Government machinery and the country’s ICT industry alike in forging ahead with our technological transformation and increase Malaysia’s global competitiveness.
Malaysia’s IoT Strategic Roadmap is part of our continuous efforts in harnessing science, technology and human capital to create a new source of economic growth. IoT will create boundless opportunities for the R&D community to thrust homegrown technologies for commercialization to a higher level.
The proliferation and the industrialization of IoT in Malaysia will lead to market creation, and in turn, job creation as well as accumulation of intellectual property. With the right direction and policies, this will bring Malaysia further towards a knowledge-based society.
The National IoT Strategic Roadmap that has been thoughtfully formulated will be the fruit of a collective national endeavor, where each and every stakeholder has a critical role to play. I am confident that it will rejuvenate vigor and energy to various implementation agencies in the Government and the Malaysian ICT industry towards achieving Vision 2020.

today’s world, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is considered as
the most effective constituent for the development of a nation. ICT has been

• German - On August 2014 the, German government passed its first "Digital
Agenda“:
– Sets the goal of providing broadband access with at least 50 Mbps to all households until
2018.
– increase the number of newly established IT firms from the current annual rate of 10,000
to 15,000 per year.
– Data security towards better protecting the economy from cyber-attacks
• India - India’s government has signed a MoU with the National Institute of
Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) to drive inclusive-growth in the
country as part of the ‘Digital India’ strategy.
– The public-private partnership is part of the government’s ambition to ensure one
member of each household in India is digitally literate to establish a knowledge-economy
in the country. Building on the 3 million citizens reached to date, the NIELIT will deliver
training and assess individuals’ digital literacy capacity.
• UK – “Digital by default” - digital services that are so straightforward and
convenient that all those who can use them will choose to do so whilst those who
can’t are not excluded. Estimation: moving services from offline to digital channels
will save between £1.7 and £1.8 billion a year.
