2. Introduction
OSF St. Joseph Medical Center benefits greatly from the
assistance of dedicated volunteers. Medical Director Dr.
Lamont Tyler gives an overview of the junior volunteer
program at the center.
Through the junior volunteer program, 14-18 year olds can
help the medical center in its mission to serve patients, staff,
and visitors with the highest quality care possible. The
program takes place during the summer months and requires
volunteers to give at least four hours per week. After a
mandatory orientation session, volunteers receive training in
the areas they will be serving, which can include working in
the gift shop, delivering flowers to patients, helping visitors
find their way, transporting patients, and running various
errands in the medical center.
3. Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers might also help in departments
such as Endoscopy or the Birthing Center by
assisting medical personnel with appropriate
tasks.
Interested volunteers must submit a consent
form signed by a parent or guardian, as well as
two letters of recommendation. According to
Dr. Lamont Tyler, volunteers admitted to the
program are expected to adhere to the medical
center’s dress code.
