Part 1: Goal Expectations
3-5 SMART goal objectives that advance the organization based on the primary responsibilities of your current role
Goal Name: Safety and training
Description
Deliverables:  Work with Kai to make an experimental review for the chemical reactions to
analyze the hazards for the synthesis work.
 Follow all safety instruction and rules for corporate safety and perform lab work
in a safe manner
 Understand the hazards of lab work by reading and understanding existing
experiemtnal review form prior to completing lab work.
 Attend monthly and quarterly safety meetings
 Complete all DCU and other training as required
Deadline: 8/14/2015
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: Ryan has attended all required safety meetings and trainings. All work was
carried out based on the corporate safety procedures.
Assessment: Met
Goal Name: Synthesis and characterization of silicone fluids and resins for OIC project
Description
Deliverables:  Put together an experimental plan, and present it to the OIC team by 6/18/15.
 Synthesis of intermediates by 7/17/15.
 Characterization and testing by 7/17/15
Deadline: 8/14/2015
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: During the 2 month intern period, Ryan has carried out more than 30
reactions, synthesized and characterized a number of intermediates. Ryan is very
proactive in understanding the reaction chemistry and efficient to complete the
tasks based on the timeline.
Assessment: Exceeded
Goal Name: Formulation of a diffusant from the above linear silicone fluid and other
components

Description
Deliverables:  Complete formulation by 7/24/15
 Complete property evaluation by 7/31/15
 Recommend future direction by 8/14/15
Deadline: 8/14/2015
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: Ryan has made over 20 formulations using the intermediates he prepared.
After initial screening, four formulations were selected and provided to the AD team
for waveguide build and evaluation. The preliminary results showed reduced
number of components, improved mechanical properties and comparable optical
properties. This work demonstrated the feasibility using a new material system for
future use in OIC project.
Assessment: Met
Part 2: Behavioral Expectations
3-5 critical behavior expectations that demonstrate HOW you will achieve your goals in Part 1
Behavior: Team work
Expectations:  Communication and collaboration with OIC team members
 Knowledgable of the needs of team members and how they relate to what I am
working on
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: During the project period, Ryan interacted broadly with the OIC team
through participation in the technical meetings, presentations, and individual project
discussions. Ryan has a clear project goal and is efficient to reach out getting help
to achieve the targets. Ryan is not shy expressing his own opinions and always
engaged in constructive dialogues. Ryan has many valuable merits which will
contribute to his long term career success. These merits include self-motivation,
deep thinking, detailed planning and hardworking, and strong drive for success.

Behavior: Data generation / analysis / presentation
Expectations:  Documenting results in the TIS report and lab notebook
 Present the results to the OIC team and/or a broader audience
 Understanding the impact of the analysis
 Data is organized and presented
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: Ryan documented his experimental procedure and results clearly in his lab
note book and the final project report. He gave one presentation at the team
meeting and a final presentation to a broader audience. Ryan can articulate the
targets clearly and assemble the data to support his conclusions.
Assessment: Met
Behavior: Understanding of silicone technology and application to the current project
Expectations:  Understanding of basic silicon chemistry and how it relates to the project
Reviews
Midyear:
Final: Kai Su: At the beginning of the preject, Ryan went through some fundamental
training on silicone chemistry and has been effectively applying his learning in the
projects. Ryan’s summer work covered a broad range of silanes and silicone
materials. He can effectively write the reaction equations, draw the structures of
various molecules and also interpretate the analytical data including GPC and NMR.
Ryan is a quick learner and never hesitate to try something new.
Assessment: Met
<U.S. Employees Only> By checking here, the manager confirms he/she and the employee
have discussed and reviewed the current work schedule (including any Flexible Work Arrangement)
during the goal setting process to ensure alignment with business needs, agreed goals, and employee
performance and behaviors.
Part 3: Overall Summary
Employee Comments:
I feel that the main objectives of my summer internship were accomplished. My safety, chemistry,
and communication skills grew in great strides. I learned how to efficienty handle both light and
heavy work loads, and I believe I did so in a way that produced results that could lead to
improvements to Dow Corning Corporation’s OIC product in the future.

In my time here as an intern, I accomplished many different things. I was not just tasked to simply
do formulations all summer. I was able to synthesize, formulate, and analyze materials. This provided
me with a wider range of knowledge and an apprietiation for the product process as a whole. My
biggest regret in this experience was that I was given a mere 12 weeks here. I find myself invested
in my project, and I wish I could see it on through further study.
Manager Comments:
Ayesha Wenzloff: Ryan has done a good job supporting the OIC team this summer and completing
the objectives set forth for his project. He demonstrated his ability to synthesize and formulate new
materials; characterize and analyze results. His ability to understand and draw the chemistry of what
he is working on is impressive – I observed this firsthand during a safety review and also during his
final presentation where he responded to a question by doing this. This demonstrates his depth of
understanding. In addition, he did a good job organizing his presentation content and appropriately
providing a good storyboard of information, highlighting his key points at each slide. I think Ryan
has a lot of potential and wish him the best moving forward.
