Doordarshan (DD) began as an experimental telecast service in Delhi in 1959 and became a daily service under All India Radio in 1965, initially providing a five-minute news bulletin. By 1975, only seven Indian cities had television access through DD, which remained the sole Indian provider until private broadcasters emerged. DD was established as a national broadcaster in 1982 and began nationwide color television broadcasts that year, including of Independence Day speeches and the 1982 Asian Games in Delhi. Today DD operates over 20 channels across genres like national news, regional languages, sports, and broadcasting of parliamentary proceedings.
