IN ORDER TO CREATE OUR DOCUMENTARY, WE NEEDED TO KNOW 
WHO OUR TARGET AUDIENCE WOULD BE AND WHAT WOULD 
INTEREST THEM. IN CREATING A DOCUMENTARY SURVERY WE ARE 
ABLE TO RESPOND TO THE INTERESTS OF THE PUBLIC.

favourite for this question, as 
13 / 20 people would prefer to 
watch a documentary by him. 
He is a humorous narrator who 
uses a reflexive mode in his 
documentaries as he gets 
involved with his subject in 
order to present it to his 
audience. All three favourite 
documentarians; Theroux, 
Broomfield and Attenborough 
are all narrators of informative 
documentaries and they get 
involved making their subject 
interest their audience.

For our survey, we created an 
open question where our 
audience could write down 
what would interest them. This 
shows a few of the ideas, 
which the targeted audience 
said would interest them in a 
documentary. Romance, 
Culture and Comical subject 
was written down by a our 
audience where people started 
agreeing. There was a range of 
ideas written down, however 
from this question we get an 
idea that the subject whatever 
it may be, if it is humorous it 
will interest our audience.

documentarian. Whether the 
documentarian would be a 
voiceover or using the reflexive 
mode where he/she is involved

It is certain from this question 
we would attract a wider 
audience if the documentarian 
is a male.

ranked the highest. ‘Extreme 
Love’ and ‘The most hated family 
in America’ involve very different 
subjects but the way he presents 
the subject enables the audience 
to be interested. When creating 
our documentary we need to think 
about the ways in which Louis 
Theroux attracts his audience.

Documentary Survey Results: How to Attract a Young Audience

  • 1. DOCUMENTARY SURVEY IN ORDER TO CREATE OUR DOCUMENTARY, WE NEEDED TO KNOW WHO OUR TARGET AUDIENCE WOULD BE AND WHAT WOULD INTEREST THEM. IN CREATING A DOCUMENTARY SURVERY WE ARE ABLE TO RESPOND TO THE INTERESTS OF THE PUBLIC.

Based on this question it shows that the questionnaire results are mostly on the people aged 10 – 20’s. So are targeted audience would be upon a younger generation. This would have an influence on our documentary in a way in which it would have to attract a lively young audience, making sure it doesn’t bore them.

Louis Theroux Nick Broomfeild David Attenborough Trevor Mcdonald Micheal Moore Other Louis Theroux is an obvious favourite for this question, as 13 / 20 people would prefer to watch a documentary by him. He is a humorous narrator who uses a reflexive mode in his documentaries as he gets involved with his subject in order to present it to his audience. All three favourite documentarians; Theroux, Broomfield and Attenborough are all narrators of informative documentaries and they get involved making their subject interest their audience.

This question shows that there Expository Observational Reflexive Poetic Participatory is no preferred documentary mode except for ‘Poetic.’ Observational ranked the highest, where the camera follows the subject around. Meaning the subject would have to purely interest the audience as the narrator would not be involved in the documentary. Although observational was preferred, the rest of the modes all ranked highly as well. Meaning the targeted audience prefers a range of documentary modes.

Daily Weekly Monthly Yearly Never 15/20 people watch documentaries on a regular bases, meaning our targeted audiences enjoy to watch documentaries. We would be competing against other documentaries which our audience would have watched. Our subject and style would have to be unique from others.

BBC TWO and Channel 4 are BBC ONE BBC TWO ITV 1 ITV 2 CHANNEL 4 FIVE DISCOVERY CHANNEL preferred channels to watch documentaries on. They are popular channels which are on Freeview, meaning a wider range of people would watch our documentary if it was to broadcast on BBC TWO and Channel 4. These two channels are there to inform, so we would have to make sure our documentary would be informative to attract a wider audience.

For our survey, we created an open question where our audience could write down what would interest them. This shows a few of the ideas, which the targeted audience said would interest them in a documentary. Romance, Culture and Comical subject was written down by a our audience where people started agreeing. There was a range of ideas written down, however from this question we get an idea that the subject whatever it may be, if it is humorous it will interest our audience.

Whether the documentarian would be a voiceover or using the reflexive mode where he/she is involved with the subject, it is clear the audience would prefer a male. It is certain from this question we would attract a wider audience if the documentarian is a male.

This question shows yet again that Louis Theroux is a personal favourite for our targeted audience, as his documentaries ranked the highest. ‘Extreme Love’ and ‘The most hated family in America’ involve very different subjects but the way he presents the subject enables the audience to be interested. When creating our documentary we need to think about the ways in which Louis Theroux attracts his audience.

Yes No Our final question relates to what our documentary is going to be about. 16/20 people would watch our documentary about Heathrow Airport and Love. Our subject may interest an audience because it unique and different. Using this questionnaire, we would try to suit to the needs of the targeted audience in order to make our documentary intriguing to them.
