Do you agree with your classmate's view of whether the concept of state of nature is compatible with biblical Christianity? Be sure to add an original thought to advance the discussion. Both Hobbes and Locke significantly try to expose the nature of man before the emergence of social existence. I believe that Locke's view on the state of nature is more persuasive than that of Hobbes. Ideally, Hobbes has a negative concept of the state of nature as his opinion is a representation of a state of permanent war, and the threat to steer the existence of individuals. He argues that all human beings are equal; hence any of them can take dominance over others irrespective of whether they use cunning or strength, which he sees as the two most essential qualities of the state of nature. Locke, on the contrary, argues that the state of nature is characterized by equality because every person has similar powers as others, implying a state of non-subjection. Conclusively Locke outlines the laws of nature that demonstrate equality amongst human beings. In contrast to the arguments of Hobbes, Locke's natural laws exist in the reality of the state of nature and are considered crucial characteristics of human nature since they are against individual freedom. The state of nature is much founded on biblical concepts. From the biblical perspectives, some people (such as Moses and David) dominated others since God placed them in positions of power. Similar to the biblical teachings, people have evolved some having power or dominance over the rest due to the legal codes imposed on them. Throughout the history of humankind, people have believed that societies need to be governed by moral laws ascribed to them by their Creator. Accordingly, the state of nature is highly compatible with the biblical teachings as the humanity related governance has since time immemorial been based on what the people believed to the laws of their Creator. As a result of having a different perspective than Thomas Hobbes and the state of nature, John Locke also views the need for enacting a social contract differently. Locke did not see humans as warring in a state of nature as Hobbes had. Instead, Locke's state of nature could be explained as a perfect place where people had the freedom to choose their own paths in life so long as it did not infringe upon others.
Locke viewed people as being kind toward one another as a result of the Law of Nature, which was a result of virtues from God. Under the Law of Nature, people were equal and would be treated as such because of their morals stemming from their belief in God. By the same token, Locke acknowledged that having liberty in the state of nature was not synonymous with a "license" to do what we pleased, as, "no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions…"(Locke, section 6). Only when a man has done something wrong can another man have power over him in the state of nature and this power cannot be used excessively, and only using calm reason and conscience (Locke, section 8)
Locke also understood the need for private property for men. Private property was the combining of a person using his (her) own labor along with the natural resources in nature to produce something. When a person used their abilities to produce something, they should have the right to that final product. However, a person could not claim more than what should be considered their own "fair share." In other words, owning excessive private property would now breach the Law of Nature. Because of the desire for private property and the want to maintain it, men would give up the freedom of the state of nature, relying upon a government for protection.
To me, Locke's state of nature is more in line with my own thinking. People are not naturally evil and warring, but instead more virtuous, whether stemming from beliefs in God, their own upbringing, or just naturally moral. As a result, the only need for people to enter into a social contract is to settle disputes and not for self preservation as Hobbes suggested.
Although I accept (interpret?) the notions of a state of nature from both Locke and Hobbes as theoretical, Locke's description seems closer to what I understand as reality. His description of the importance of property is not only unique from Hobbes', but also makes sense. People "like their things" and do not want them taken away. This seems very natural in society today. Locke's views were instrumental not only in our "re-establishment" of the state of nature when the American colonists declared their independence, but was also instrumental in the writing of the Bill of Rights.

Introduction
Social contract theorists say that morality consists of a set of rules governing how people should treat one another that rational beings will agree to accept for their mutual benefit, on the condition that others agree to follow these rules as well.
Hobbes runs the logic like this in the form of a logical syllogism:
1. We are all self-interested.
2. Each of us needs to have a peaceful and cooperative social order to pursue our interests.
3. We need moral rules in order to establish and maintain a cooperative social order.
4. Therefore, self-interest motivates us to establish moral rules.
Hobbes looked to the past to observe a primitive “State of Nature” in which there is no such thing as morality, and that this self-interested human nature was "nasty, brutish, and short" – a kind of perpetual state of warfare.
Locke disagreed, and set forth the view that the state exists to preserve the natural rights of its citizens. When governments fail in that task, citizens have the right – and sometimes the duty – to withdraw their support and even to rebel. Locke addressed Hobbes's claim that the state of nature was the state of war, though he attribute this claim to "some men" not to Hobbes. He refuted it by pointing to existing and real historical examples of people in a state of nature. For this purpose he regarded any people who are not subject to a common judge to resolve disputes, people who may legitimately take action themselves to punish wrong doers, as in a state of nature.

Often we use words like freedom and liberty without ever thinking about what these words mean. We assume that we all mean the same thing by these words; however, in reality, we all live by different personal definitions of freedom and liberty. Our definitions are not based on a dictionary but are informed by our unique personal life experiences. Consider the diversity even in this course. How might someone understand words like liberty and freedom from a background, culture, age, gender, or even race that is different from yours? Each of us has a unique story that has brought us to this point – and each of our stories is intrinsically valuable and important.
If we think about this level of diversity – how and why do such different individuals come together to exist together in a society?
The State of Nature, or Life Without Government
Simply, freedom and liberty are not the same thing. Let’s consider what we mean by freedom. For our purposes, freedom is doing whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it.
If everyone had absolute freedom and could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted what would our world look like? What would our relationships with each other look like?
These are the questions that political philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke asked. These are also question that our founders asked as they pondered the creation of a new nation. They called this condition of absolute freedom the State of Nature – a state in which people lived in absolute freedom with no social structures or government.
For Hobbes, life in this state of nature looked very terrible. Hobbes described the state of nature as:
“In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short…”
Additionally, Hobbes suggested:
“For before constitution of sovereign power, as hath already been shown, all men had right to all things, which necessarily causeth war.”
For Hobbes, freedom was each individual having the right to all things. If you have new car, in the state of nature, I have right to take your new car – even by force and violence.
Hobbes is saying that in the state of nature, or trying to live life without government, no form of cooperation between individuals is possible and thus there will be no grocery stores, no computers, no smartphones, no art, and each individual will suffer a very quick and violent death.

Abstract
We read and study about American History, The Declaration of Independents, The Constitution of The United States of America, but have you ever been curious where the writers of these documents discovered the ideas and principles that set the standards for such documents. The truth is many philosophers are responsible for the basic frame work of the most celebrated, studied, and referenced documents our government has ever produced. I am going to discuss three of the philosophers in the following paper. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau, their beliefs in social contracts and human nature have served as framework for many areas in our American History.
Politics and Social Contracts.
Understanding morality, human nature, and social contracts will help you understand the framework for many of today’s political decisions as they have built upon each other throughout history. First let’s look at our roles as citizens according to Hobbes, Loucke and Rousseau.
Hobbes believed that humans were unconstrained by laws or social agreements were living in a state of nature, selfish, destructive, and unprincipled. Without social contracts human lives would be nasty and very unpleasant. Loucke was a bit more optimistic regarding human nature, that humans being rational creatures were governed by natural laws and entitled to certain inalienable rights, known as life, liberty, health and property. That humans will come together to ensure their natural rights. Rousseau was more focused on human compassion, all humans are naturally compassionate. Look at these beliefs, and then think about society today, do you know someone that truly represents each one of these beliefs regarding human nature? Possibly even look back though your own life and the stages of growth you have experienced, I know at various times in my life I could have very fittingly been described by each of these descriptions of human nature.
Social contracts are believed to be essential, in order for humans to thrive and prosper by all of the philosophers, yet each of them had a slightly different view of how the social contracts affected society. Hobbes believed that social contracts were necessary to allow humans to coexist successfully in society. That humans would recognize the need and enter into the social contract willfully in order to enhance our own lives. Social contracts were necessary in order to establish justice and laws. Loucke believed that humans would find it to our advantage to come together, form a political state to maintain and ensure our natural rights. Throughout the years our natural rights are more commonly referred to as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If ever there were a newspaper headline custom-made for Jay Leno's monologue, this
was it. Kids taking on McDonald's this week, suing the company for making them fat.
Isn't that like middle-aged men suing Porsche for making them get speeding tickets?
Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
I tend to sympathize with these portly fast-food patrons, though. Maybe that's because I
used to be one of them.
I grew up as a typical mid-1980's latchkey kid. My parents were split up, my dad off
trying to rebuild his life, my mom working long hours to make the monthly bills. Lunch
and dinner, for me, was a daily choice between McDonald's, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried
Chicken or Pizza Hut. Then as now, these were the only available options for an
American kid to get an affordable meal. By age 15, I had packed 212 pounds of torpid
teenage tallow on my once lanky 5-foot-10 frame.
Then I got lucky. I went to college, joined the Navy Reserves and got involved with a
health magazine. I learned how to manage my diet. But most of the teenagers who live,
as I once did, on a fast-food diet won't turn their lives around: They've crossed under the
golden arches to a likely fate of lifetime obesity. And the problem isn't just theirs -- it's
all of ours.
Before 1994, diabetes in children was generally caused by a genetic disorder -- only
about 5 percent of childhood cases were obesity-related, or Type 2, diabetes. Today,
according to the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes accounts for at least 30
percent of all new childhood cases of diabetes in this country.
Not surprisingly, money spent to treat diabetes has skyrocketed, too. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention estimate that diabetes accounted for $2.6 billion in
health care costs in 1969. Today's number is an unbelievable $100 billion a year.
Shouldn't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants? That's
one argument. But where, exactly, are consumers -- particularly teenagers -- supposed
to find alternatives? Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you'll see
one of our country's more than 13,000 McDonald's restaurants. Now, drive back up the
block and try to find someplace to buy a grapefruit.
Complicating the lack of alternatives is the lack of information about what, exactly, we're
consuming. There are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging, the way
there are on grocery items. Advertisements don't carry warning labels the way tobacco
ads do. Prepared foods aren't covered under Food and Drug Administration labeling
laws. Some fast-food purveyors will provide calorie information on request, but even
that can be hard to understand.
For example, one company's Web site lists its chicken salad as containing 150 calories;
the almonds and noodles that come with it (an additional 190 calories) are listed

In this journal it talks about the public’s perception on white-collar crime and its focus on gender. It talks about the relationship between crime type and the respondent’s perception of appropriate punishment and Its relation to gender. I do feel like a weakness to this survey would be location. They chose to talk to people that were coming from jury duty and I feel that puts a bias factor on keeping the data general. Most people coming from jury duty are most likely inclined to feel that the criminals deserve to be charged. Which is shown in the results because all respondents perceived the six crimes to be very serious offense. I also feel that the scenarios should not have been so vague as reported in the study because it does leave a lot of room of confusion and misunderstanding for the people filling out the survey. I do feel that this study is relative to my paper because they talk about how public views the punishment, attitudes and motivation which is going to interesting to do more research.

I do feel that a limitation in this study is that they did not include enough varieties in crimes which could alter the results possibly. I found this survey interesting because I feel that it was the most random survey done. I feel like the information on here would be the most accurate in getting a consensus on the public’s opinion. I also liked how they included the criminal justice system personnel’s perception in the study because no other study discussed that which gives a whole different perspective on my whole topic. This will help my paper because they used random, national probability samples that will help my theory that white-collar crime is as bad or even worse than street crime.

Locke addressed Hobbes's claim that the state of nature was the state of war, though he attribute this claim to "some men" not to Hobbes. He refuted it by pointing to existing and real historical examples of people in a state of nature. For this purpose he regarded any people who are not subject to a common judge to resolve disputes, people who may legitimately take action themselves to punish wrong doers, as in a state of nature.

Often we use words like freedom and liberty without ever thinking about what these words mean. We assume that we all mean the same thing by these words; however, in reality, we all live by different personal definitions of freedom and liberty. Our definitions are not based on a dictionary but are informed by our unique personal life experiences. Consider the diversity even in this course. How might someone understand words like liberty and freedom from a background, culture, age, gender, or even race that is different from yours? Each of us has a unique story that has brought us to this point – and each of our stories is intrinsically valuable and important.
If we think about this level of diversity – how and why do such different individuals come together to exist together in a society?
The State of Nature, or Life Without Government
Simply, freedom and liberty are not the same thing. Let’s consider what we mean by freedom. For our purposes, freedom is doing whatever you want to do, whenever you want to do it.
If everyone had absolute freedom and could do whatever they wanted whenever they wanted what would our world look like? What would our relationships with each other look like?
These are the questions that political philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes and John Locke asked. These are also question that our founders asked as they pondered the creation of a new nation. They called this condition of absolute freedom the State of Nature – a state in which people lived in absolute freedom with no social structures or government.
For Hobbes, life in this state of nature looked very terrible. Hobbes described the state of nature as:
“In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short…”
Additionally, Hobbes suggested:
“For before constitution of sovereign power, as hath already been shown, all men had right to all things, which necessarily causeth war.”
For Hobbes, freedom was each individual having the right to all things. If you have new car, in the state of nature, I have right to take your new car – even by force and violence.
Hobbes is saying that in the state of nature, or trying to live life without government, no form of cooperation between individuals is possible and thus there will be no grocery stores, no computers, no smartphones, no art, and each individual will suffer a very quick and violent death.
The founders of our nation shared Hobbes’ fairly pessimistic outlook regarding human nature. James Madison famously wrote i.

Abstract
We read and study about American History, The Declaration of Independents, The Constitution of The United States of America, but have you ever been curious where the writers of these documents discovered the ideas and principles that set the standards for such documents. The truth is many philosophers are responsible for the basic frame work of the most celebrated, studied, and referenced documents our government has ever produced. I am going to discuss three of the philosophers in the following paper. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean Jacques Rousseau, their beliefs in social contracts and human nature have served as framework for many areas in our American History.
Politics and Social Contracts.
Understanding morality, human nature, and social contracts will help you understand the framework for many of today’s political decisions as they have built upon each other throughout history. First let’s look at our roles as citizens according to Hobbes, Loucke and Rousseau.
Hobbes believed that humans were unconstrained by laws or social agreements were living in a state of nature, selfish, destructive, and unprincipled. Without social contracts human lives would be nasty and very unpleasant. Loucke was a bit more optimistic regarding human nature, that humans being rational creatures were governed by natural laws and entitled to certain inalienable rights, known as life, liberty, health and property. That humans will come together to ensure their natural rights. Rousseau was more focused on human compassion, all humans are naturally compassionate. Look at these beliefs, and then think about society today, do you know someone that truly represents each one of these beliefs regarding human nature? Possibly even look back though your own life and the stages of growth you have experienced, I know at various times in my life I could have very fittingly been described by each of these descriptions of human nature.
Social contracts are believed to be essential, in order for humans to thrive and prosper by all of the philosophers, yet each of them had a slightly different view of how the social contracts affected society. Hobbes believed that social contracts were necessary to allow humans to coexist successfully in society. That humans would recognize the need and enter into the social contract willfully in order to enhance our own lives. Social contracts were necessary in order to establish justice and laws. Loucke believed that humans would find it to our advantage to come together, form a political state to maintain and ensure our natural rights. Throughout the years our natural rights are more commonly referred to as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If ever there were a newspaper headline custom-made for Jay Leno's monologue, this
was it. Kids taking on McDonald's this week, suing the company for making them fat.
Isn't that like middle-aged men suing Porsche for making them get speeding tickets?
Whatever happened to personal responsibility?
I tend to sympathize with these portly fast-food patrons, though. Maybe that's because I
used to be one of them.
I grew up as a typical mid-1980's latchkey kid. My parents were split up, my dad off
trying to rebuild his life, my mom working long hours to make the monthly bills. Lunch
and dinner, for me, was a daily choice between McDonald's, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried
Chicken or Pizza Hut. Then as now, these were the only available options for an
American kid to get an affordable meal. By age 15, I had packed 212 pounds of torpid
teenage tallow on my once lanky 5-foot-10 frame.
Then I got lucky. I went to college, joined the Navy Reserves and got involved with a
health magazine. I learned how to manage my diet. But most of the teenagers who live,
as I once did, on a fast-food diet won't turn their lives around: They've crossed under the
golden arches to a likely fate of lifetime obesity. And the problem isn't just theirs -- it's
all of ours.
Before 1994, diabetes in children was generally caused by a genetic disorder -- only
about 5 percent of childhood cases were obesity-related, or Type 2, diabetes. Today,
according to the National Institutes of Health, Type 2 diabetes accounts for at least 30
percent of all new childhood cases of diabetes in this country.
Not surprisingly, money spent to treat diabetes has skyrocketed, too. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention estimate that diabetes accounted for $2.6 billion in
health care costs in 1969. Today's number is an unbelievable $100 billion a year.
Shouldn't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants? That's
one argument. But where, exactly, are consumers -- particularly teenagers -- supposed
to find alternatives? Drive down any thoroughfare in America, and I guarantee you'll see
one of our country's more than 13,000 McDonald's restaurants. Now, drive back up the
block and try to find someplace to buy a grapefruit.
Complicating the lack of alternatives is the lack of information about what, exactly, we're
consuming. There are no calorie information charts on fast-food packaging, the way
there are on grocery items. Advertisements don't carry warning labels the way tobacco
ads do. Prepared foods aren't covered under Food and Drug Administration labeling
laws. Some fast-food purveyors will provide calorie information on request, but even
that can be hard to understand.
For example, one company's Web site lists its chicken salad as containing 150 calories;
the almonds and noodles that come with it (an additional 190 calories) are listed

In this journal it talks about the public’s perception on white-collar crime and its focus on gender. It talks about the relationship between crime type and the respondent’s perception of appropriate punishment and Its relation to gender. I do feel like a weakness to this survey would be location. They chose to talk to people that were coming from jury duty and I feel that puts a bias factor on keeping the data general. Most people coming from jury duty are most likely inclined to feel that the criminals deserve to be charged. Which is shown in the results because all respondents perceived the six crimes to be very serious offense. I also feel that the scenarios should not have been so vague as reported in the study because it does leave a lot of room of confusion and misunderstanding for the people filling out the survey. I do feel that this study is relative to my paper because they talk about how public views the punishment, attitudes and motivation which is going to interesting to do more research.

In this journal it talks about the controversy surrounding the ranking of crime seriousness of white-collar crimes relative to street crimes. I do feel that a limitation in this study is that they did not include enough varieties in crimes which could alter the results possibly. I found this survey interesting because I feel that it was the most random survey done. I feel like the information on here would be the most accurate in getting a consensus on the public’s opinion. I also liked how they included the criminal justice system personnel’s perception in the study because no other study discussed that which gives a whole different perspective on my whole topic. This will help my paper because they used random, national probability samples that will help my theory that white-collar crime is as bad or even worse than street crime.

Document Background: On January 17, 1961, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave his farewell address to the nation. Over the previous two decades, the United States had undergone numerous significant changes, including World War II, the beginning of the Cold War, the Korean War, the emergence of nuclear weapons, a rapidly growing economy, and several substantial Civil Rights victories. Eisenhower, as a general and then as president, had been at the center of many of these. In his farewell address, Eisenhower focused on the Cold War with the Soviet Union and on the challenges facing the United States, including a warning about the growing power of the “military-industrial complex.”

In this final relationship, the Congress and the Administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the national good rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the Nation should go forward. So, my official relationship with the Congress ends in a feeling, on my part, of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together.
II.
We now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. Three of these involved our own country. Despite these holocausts America is today the strongest, the most influential and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that America's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Acetabularia acetabulum is a single-celled green alga that in its vegetative state is morphologically differentiated into a basal rhizoid and an axially elongated stalk, which bears whorls of branching hairs. The single diploid nucleus resides in the rhizoid.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 1. Do you agree with your classmate's view of whether the concept of state of nature is compatible with biblical Christianity? Be sure to add an original thought to advance the discussion. Both Hobbes and Locke significantly try to expose the nature of man before the emergence of social existence. I believe that Locke's view on the state of nature is more persuasive than that of Hobbes. Ideally, Hobbes has a negative concept of the state of nature as his opinion is a representation of a state of permanent war, and the threat to steer the existence of individuals. He argues that all human beings are equal; hence any of them can take dominance over others irrespective of whether they use cunning or strength, which he sees as the two most essential qualities of the state of nature. Locke, on the contrary, argues that the state of nature is characterized by equality because every person has similar powers as others, implying a state of non-subjection. Conclusively Locke outlines the laws of nature that demonstrate equality amongst human beings. In contrast to the arguments of Hobbes, Locke's natural laws exist in the reality of the state of nature and are considered crucial characteristics of human nature since they are against individual freedom. The state of nature is much founded on biblical concepts. From the biblical perspectives, some people (such as Moses and David) dominated others since God placed them in positions of power. Similar to the biblical teachings, people have evolved some having power or dominance over the rest due to the legal codes imposed on them. Throughout the history of humankind, people have believed that societies need to be governed by moral laws ascribed to them by their Creator. Accordingly, the state of nature is highly compatible with the biblical teachings as the humanity related governance has since time immemorial been based on what the people believed to the
