A DMP is a formal document that outlines what you will do with your data during and after your research. This ensures that your data will be safe now and in the future.
Preparing a DMP saves time! If your organization scheme is decided on early, it can be used throughout the life of the data rather than having to organize after data have been collected. Secondly, it allows you to focus on the researchIt also increases research efficiency. If data are documented well before and during data collection, it prevents problems in understanding data and metadata in the future, by both you and others.
As of January 2011 NSF is now requiring 2 page data management plan to be included in all submitted proposals. This is in addition to the 15 pages for the proposal.AAG = award and administration guide; see next slide
Clarify the purposeList the impact and risksIs this a one time shot at gathering observational data or is this an experiment that could be repeated?Determine which sides of the triangle are flexibleIf you are going on a research trip where the schedule is set (ie. research cruise), then that element is not flexible, and cost/scope may need to adjust.
