TEACHING PORTFOLIO SUMMARY
Teaching Philosophy:
My teaching philosophy incorporates Piaget's Constructivist Learning Technique (CLT) which is based
on the educational and psychological theory that, student learning is achieved by introducing new subject
matter information with 'how to' conceptual knowledge, supplemented with instructor real world experience,
thereby allowing the student to make continuous comparative updates to replace their existing incomplete or
erroneous mental schema to improve their overall conceptual understanding and relational knowledge-base of
the new subject matter information.
During my course lectures and laboratory exercises, I apply the Constructivist Learning Technique to
successfully teach my students critical problem-solving skills for logic-based reasoned solutions utilizing
structured Project-Based Learning (PBL) courseware; a step-by-step 'how to' hands-on learning experience,
while also incorporating teacher shared real world industry experiences, resulting in an increase in the
student's own relational knowledge-base, which provides them an entirely new perspective and conceptual
understanding of the subject matter information.
Student Project-Based Learning laboratory exercises literally bring the lecture concepts to life! As my
students become intrigued with their new conceptual understanding of the subject matter and exhibit an
increased feeling of accomplishment – attained through application and successful completion of learned
hands-on Project-Based Learning (PBL) skills, hence they remain highly motivated – indicating an increased
desire to learn more about the subject matter. To the student, the feeling of accomplishment and motivation
to learn more occurs intuitively and naturally, as they are unaware of the underlying implementation of
Constructivist Learning Techniques which have begun the fundamental process of tearing down erroneous
preconceived assumptions within their old conceptual mental schema while reducing unnecessary
dependencies on rote memorization and/or regurgitation of 'coined' answers to the subject matter.
Teaching according to Constructivist Learning Techniques through application of Project-based Learning
courseware, has proven to be most beneficial to my student's learning and subject matter comprehension,
resulting in a measurable increase in their accuracy of data retention, improved factual data associations, and
has aided in their development of new secure (long-term) conceptual schema frameworks. Consequently, my
students learn new 'adaptive' real world critical thinking and problem-solving skills, are capable of expanding
upon the newly learned subject matter, can develop their own creative ideas based-on a new sound
conceptual understanding, which allows them to independently think, build and create new innovative
designs, applicable to: past, present and future real world applications throughout their academic and
industry careers.
Most notably, my teaching philosophy – to implement Piaget's Constructivist Learning Technique
through application of Project-based learning (PBL) courseware, is fully compliant to and supportive of the
Agile 5-Phase ADDIE Instruction Systems Design (ISD) Model: 1) Analysis, 2) Design, 3) Development,
4) Implementation (Deploy) and 5) Evaluation. My students learn to apply the Agile ADDIE ISD Model during
execution of their PBL laboratory exercises, hence they can easily transition from academic laboratory, to full
scale industry design-development-production with minimal complication or delay. Industry employers of my
students appreciate the fact that their new hired – aspiring engineers, have the innate ability to successfully
tackle new design challenges with minimal on-the-job training or supervision.
