Many standards have been developed within food safety: specific company International
standards, legal regulations, as well as standards developed by retailers. Their Organization for
Standardization
proliferation made their application difficult. At the same time, food safety
principles have spread across the world. The safety of foodstuffs has become a
major issue for all players in the food chain. A single standard with worldwide
reach, and including the food safety principles, thus became necessary. This was
the reason ISO developed and released ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management
System in 2005. There are number of technical standards and guidelines in the
series of ISO 22000 and published to facilitate the industry for effective food safety management system.
ISO 22000:2005 is best standard to integrate other management system concepts like Quality, Environment and
Occupational Health and Safety. The design of ISO 22000 is very much in lined with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and
OHSAHS 18001.

Certification 22000
The Foundation for Food Safety Certification was founded in 2004. The
Foundation developed FSSC 22000, the ISO 22000 and BSI PAS 220 based
certification scheme for certification of food manufacturers. This
development is supported by the Confederation of the Food and Drink Industries of the European Union (CIAA).
The scheme is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).
FSSC 22000 contains a complete certification scheme for Food Safety Systems based ISO 22000: 2005, Publicly
Available Specification for Prerequisite Programs on food safety for food manufacturing, BSI PAS 220: 2008. The
scheme is using existing standards for certification (ISO 22000, PAS 220 and ISO 22003) and the certification will be
accredited under the standard ISO guide 17021. Manufacturers that are already certified against ISO 22000 will
only need an additional review against BSI PAS 220 to meet this certification scheme.
The FSSC 22000 certification scheme has been given full recognition by the Global Food Safety Initiative Board of
Directors. This follows an extensive benchmarking process using the requirements laid out in the GFSI Guidance
Document Version 5, and an addendum which was issued in December 2009.

The British Retail Consortium is the lead trade association
representing the whole range of retailers, from the large
multiples and department stores in the United Kingdom. In
1998 the British Retail Consortium (BRC), responding to
industry needs, developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard to be used to evaluate manufacturers
of retailers own brand food products. It is designed to be used as a pillar to help retailers and brand owners with

(Hauptverband des Deutschen Einzelhandels) have developed a common audit standard called
International Food Standard or IFS. In 2003, French food retailers (and wholesalers) from the
FCD have joined the IFS Working Group and have contributed to development of IFS version 4.

The SQF Institute (SQFI) is a division of the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), an
association that conducts programs in public affairs, food safety, research,
education and industry relations on behalf of its 1,500 member companies -
food retailers and wholesalers - in the United States and around the world. The
SQF INSTITUTE
SQF Institute was established by FMI in 2004 to administer the SQF Program
and is located in Arlington, Virginia.
The SQF (Safe Quality Food) Program is a leading, global food safety and quality
certification program and management system designed to meet the needs of buyers

ISO/IEC 17025:2005 specifies the general requirements for the competence to carry out tests and/or calibrations,
including sampling. It covers testing and calibration performed using standard methods, non-
standard methods, and laboratory-developed methods. It is applicable to all organizations
performing tests and/or calibrations. These include, for example, first-, second- and
third-party laboratories, and laboratories where testing and/or calibration forms part
of inspection and product certification.
ISO/IEC 17025:2005 is for use by laboratories in developing their management system
for quality, administrative and technical operations. Laboratory customers, regulatory
authorities and accreditation bodies may also use it in confirming or recognizing the
