This document provides instructions for measuring distances on a map using either string or paper. It describes a 3-step process for using string: 1) place one end of the string on the starting point and lay it along the route, 2) mark the string at the finish point, 3) straighten the string and measure it against the scale bar. For using paper, it describes marking the paper edge each time the route moves and pivoting it back into position, then measuring the marks against the scale bar to determine the total distance.
