Mumbai’s air more polluted, but water gets cleaner
Data accessed from the BMC’s yet to be released
environment status report (ESR) for 2013-14 shows
that pollutant levels in the air have gone up in a few
areas, but the percentage of water samples found
contaminated have reduced to 11 this year from 20
last year.

Evaluation of ESRs of Cities in Maharashtra for Maharashtra Pollution Control
Board – Work done by Environmental Management Centre LLP
• ESRs have a role to play in aligning developmental policies with environment
• An indicator based framework was developed to this effect following
international practices with adaption to Indian cities
• Developed a Microsoft Excel TM Model for the comparison
• Framework was applied to ESRs of various cities in Maharashtra
• Observation and experience of this application led to specific recommendations.
• Provided strategies to strengthen the quality and use of ESRs for action planning
• Prepared model ESRs and provided guidance on how to prepare ESRs as well as
way ahead
