A Curriculum Designed to Foster the Application of Knowledge to Positive Social Change

Your Prospectus requires that you write about the significance of the research—the “so what?” question. What original contribution will this study make? How will it affect professional practice or other practical application, and how can findings lead to positive social change?
Research results often have social change implications and make a difference in the world. Choosing to conduct research on an area or topic that can do so suggests that you are attempting to be the kind of researcher whose intellectual pursuits are altruistic. Note that one of the required sections of your Dissertation is the implications of your research findings for fostering positive social change. As you design your research plan, identifying implications for social change, it is critical that you examine any related ethical considerations to these social change efforts.
Majchrzak and Markus (2014) write of positive social change resulting from systemic policy research findings, in the sense that it “involves both evidence and meaning to create outcomes that help to change the world” (p. 2). In order to do this, it “requires people to take actions, observe the consequences of those actions, and then change their actions based on feedback” (pp. 2–3), or “learn by doing.” Of course, policy analysis is only one type of research in public policy and administration. Even so, Majchrzak and Markus continue, “We know that it takes passion to change the world, but it takes more than passion to make the world a better place. It takes critical thinking, evidence, meaning, and careful value judgments” (p. 9).

Their focus is on the social mission of creating transformative change for complex social problems, such as poverty, illiteracy, lack of affordable housing, economic disparities, human rights abuses, challenges to peace and security, and environmental destruction, to name a few.
Given this vision, they create and apply ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, family systems, neighborhoods, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies—locally, nationally, and globally. As a route to social innovation and social justice, social entrepreneurship is a form of leadership that maximizes the social return on efforts to change the world, while fundamentally and permanently changing the way problems are addressed on a global scale. century graduate student’s especially those doing graduate work at Walden university, as according to the Walden mission statement, social change is not just a phenomenon that they talk about, “it is who they are” (Walden University, 2015).
It is instructive to note that change is part of the daily lives of human beings, as the world is not a static place, but a dynamic place. If the issues and phenomena that humans interact with are going to change on a constant basis, why then not jump in front of that change and direct it towards the good of society, is a relevant question to ask? It is against this backdrop that Walden university decided to jump ahead of the cultural, environmental, innovative, population and technological forces that shape change and make it a positive experience for their graduate students in the 21
st
century.
The Walden graduate student is therefore availed the academic, social, cultural and spiritual experience to equip him or her with the type of education that will make a difference not only in his or her own life, but in the life of the larger community that he or she hails from and will potentially serve after graduation.

In the recent years, the pursuit for institutions, “practical researchers” and individuals to join in the crusade for
social change
has been remarkable; as many people around the world are reaching out to their neighborhoods as a member of the community to contribute to the common good through research, service, and educational opportunities (
Yob
& Brewer, 2015. p.2). Social change constitutes a change in the nature, the social institutions, the social behavior or the social relations of a society, community of people, or other social structures (Walden University, 2016). Social change can be at the micro scale (that positively shape values, attitudes and behaviors) or at the macro scale (that positively shape
economies, religion and families).
The Essence of Social Change to a Walden Student
Yob
& Brewer (2015) observed that the term “social change” has been defined and analyzed across the academic disciplines, reflecting the particular perspective of that discipline and its research agenda. Prominent among the definition of
social change
are the concepts of
social justice
and
equity
which have been significant in discussions of social change in education, psychology, and social and cultural studies (Curry-Stevens, 2007; Drury &
Reicher
, 2009;
Moely
,
Furco
, & Reed, 2008; and
Peterson, 2009, as were cited in
Yob
& Brewer (2015). There are as many definitions for
social change
as we have social scientists. However
Hoff and
Hickling
-Hudson (2011), supporting the definition of
Aloni
(2002), provided the definition which places social change as “challenging trends of discrimination, exploitation, oppression, and subjugation displayed by groups who regard themselves as favored and, thus, take privileges for themselves and deprive other groups of the right to a dignified life” (p. 189). In this context, “
change”
as is used in the “social change” is defined here in positive and value-laden terms that relate more particularly to the agents of social change than to others they might want to change.

Kizza (2014) largely treated cyber-attacks as “cybercrime,” conveying the assumption that these attacks are by definition illegitimate and criminal. I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. The trade aspect drove me to be specific on the focus question that need to address the impacts of Pequot War to Europeans and Natives. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. My choice is therefore grounded on the enthusiasm to discover more knowledge into this particular aspect.

I opted for “This Land is My Land” topic due to my insightful interest to explore historical events related to patriotism and balancing power between Europeans and Natives in situations such as trade negotiations. The trade aspect drove me to be specific on the focus question that need to address the impacts of Pequot War to Europeans and Natives. In this case, the contact of both had profound effect where balance of power shifted overnight from natives to Europeans. My choice is therefore grounded on the enthusiasm to discover more knowledge into this particular aspect.

to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning
of any area. Consequently, a wide range of professionals, including earth system scientists, land
