Research in context. OCLC Research and environmental trends. Lorcan Dempseylisld
Delivered at the OCLC Symposium at the Americas Regional Councils meeting at ALA, January 2015.
Reviews several major research themes - shared space and shared print, digital information behaviors, and the evolution of the scholarly record - in terms of general environmental trends. Highlights work done by OCLC Research.
This is the first part of a two part presentation. The second part was given by my colleague Chrystie Hill.
We used to think of the user in the life of the library. Now we think of the library in the life of the user. As behaviors change in a network environment, we have seen growing interest in ethnographic and user-centered design approaches. This presentation introduces this topic. It also explores changes in how we manage collections as an illustration of this shift towards thinking of the library in the life of the user.
This presentation was provided by Jane Burke of ProQuest and Serials Solutions, during the NISO/BISG 4th Annual Forum: The Changing Standards Landscape, held on June 25, 2010.
Zotero's group library feature offers an opportunity for librarians to efficiently embed in class research projects while providing appealing visual tools for fast assessment.

In 2011, Missouri Southern State University joined an ever-growing pool of MOBIUS libraries that have adopted the Summon Discovery interface. While our patrons have embraced this new product, it initially posed many changes and challenges for our staff during and after implementation including workflow adjustment, reference services and library skills training. In this session we will share our experience with Summon and the challenges we faced in technical services and at the reference desk. If you institution is thinking about adoption a discovery interface, come learn from our mistakes and avoid some of the trouble we weren't expecting!

Designing the Next Generation of Search User Experience - UXPA2015Design for Context
Video available: http://www.designforcontext.com/insights/designing-next-generation-search-user-experience
Search applications aren’t "just like Google" anymore – even Google is no longer the simple application it once was. Design is coming to the forefront of effective search applications, to help make sense of mobile search, data search, semantic search, enterprise search, federated search, and embedded search within websites and applications.
So what do we need to know about designing for search? We need to understand our users’ mental models for how they perceive seeking within an information environment. We need to understand how to provide powerful user control over results and yet keep it extremely simple. We need to know how to test for effective comprehension as well as task execution. And we need to know how to get the most out of the new available technologies and data. This UXPA 2015 talk is a deep dive into the essentials for a new generation of search designs.

Plenary session for Charleston Conference 2013. Authors: Michael Levine-Clark, John McDonald, Jason Price. In this first large scale study of the effect of discovery systems on electronic resource usage, the authors present initial findings on how these systems alter online journal usage by academic library researchers. The study examines usage of content hosted by four major academic journal publishers at 24 libraries that have implemented one of the major discovery systems, EBSCO's EDS, Ex Libris' Primo, OCLC's Worldcat Local, or SerialsSolutions’ Summon. A statistically rigorous comparison of COUNTER-compliant journal usage at each library from the 12 months before and after implementation will determine the degree to which usage rises or falls after discovery tool implementation and address rumors that discovery tools differ in their impact on electronic resource usage.

About the Webinar
The "single search box" approach of web search engines like Google and Bing have forced libraries and system developers to rethink their whole approach to end-user searching for library and publisher resources and electronic content. Discovery systems are continuing to evolve from simple keyword search systems, to more elaborate indexed discovery, to new forms of usage-based discovery and beyond. Because discovery of content is such a critical component of library services, understanding in what potential ways these systems will develop is critical for library staff, either when selecting a system, or seeking ways to improve its service. NISO launched a research study in early 2014 on the status of discovery systems, their potential future development directions, and the systems interoperability needs of these services.
This webinar will cover some of the latest developments of library discovery systems as well as discuss the findings of the NISO research study, and the implications of those results.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
This graph shows the average usage by library, with blue being the “Before usage” and red being the “After Usage”. As you can see, a few libraries saw large average declines in usage (first column and third column), while most others saw slight or modest increases in usage after implementation.
